Disavow 60% of the external links?
-
Hi guys,
We just discovered that our website got a 16% Spam Score based on MOZ reports, while less than 1 year ago we had a good 1% if I'm not mistaken. Therefore we ran an audit of the external links to our website and discovered that about 60% of them are irrelevant such as:
- referral page not available anymore (or not found, or domain not accessible)
- irrelevant web directories for our business
Impossible to contact the owner of these pages or remove the links towards our website.
Is the Disavow tool an acceptable option in this case? Could this lower our Spam Score and make a better impression in "Google's eyes"? 60% seems quite a lot of backlinks, but they are also not relevant, and we want to focus on creating better quality referrals in the next months.I would really appreciate an opinion on this, and how would you proceed in this case.

Don't disavow any links before talking to an seo consultant about whether the links should be disavowed or not
Many businesses have tried to disavow links themselves, and sometimesthe links might not have needed disavowing. So do contact an expert seo consultant or an SEO Agency first for advice before you disavow any links.

Hi A
Well done, you are 100% on the right track. Go get em.

Thank you very much for all your insights! I'll look into each of them and it's good to know there's no need to disavow most of the referral links. The website is doing pretty well actually (ranking keeps improving in the last months), so I guess the next step would be to focus on building better quality links. Thanks again for all your opinions!

Check this post out. In reference to a similar question.
Basically the TLDR is that unless it looks like blatant PBN/SPAM/Manipulation google doesn't seem to concerned. I have plenty of backlink that are 75% spam score and higher. Obviously I don't recommend looking for links that are super high spam score but I would put your effort into link acquisition as opposed to link cleanup.

Hi there!
Thanks so much for the question! I do want to make sure to point out that Spam Score is not dependent on your backlinks. Spam Score is the percentage of sites with similar characteristics to yours which have been banned or penalized by Google. We calculate this based on 27 common factors we identified.
Disavowing links isn't the best way to improve your Spam Score in Link Explorer. If you're looking to improve that score, I would recommend understanding the 27 factors that make up this score and working on improving those: https://mza.bundledseo.com/help/link-explorer/link-building/spam-score
In addition, disavowing links will not remove the links from you backlink profile in Moz. Since disavowing a link doesn't take it away, it would still appear in our link index.
We also have a great blog post which may help: https://mza.bundledseo.com/blog/do-we-still-need-to-disavow-penguin
I hope all this info helps! If you have further questions or if you need anything else, please feel free to reach out to [email protected]

Hi
Disavow should be a last resort.
The Spam score is a guide ONLY. It is a wake-up call to investigate. As you have done examine each link where possible individually. It appears no action is required based on your findings.
That said the first queries are - is your site ranking well? have there been any large dips or a noticeable decline? Can you clarify?
I add if so then need to undertake a full technical audit, so not a disavow yet..
Regards

Links in link lists not being discovered by Moz
I uploaded a couple of link lists to Moz about a week ago and have been tracking them. Most of the links on the list are from significant 90+ DA domains such as Wikipedia, Medium, etc. So far, Moz only seems to have discovered about 4 the 200 or so links I loaded. Do we know how long it takes for these to be discovered by Moz? Quite new to this, so any help understanding timelines for this would be appreciated.

What does "Number of Linking Root Domains" in Open Site Explorer actually mean?
I've read through the forum, but I'm confused as to what "Number of Linking Root Domains" means in the Linking Domains report. For example, if the root domain is Moz.com and the number is 135,000 does that mean there are 135,000 links from Moz pointing back to my site or does it mean there are 135,000 sites linking back to Moz? Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

Backlinks not showing on Open Site Explorer's Just-Discovered Links
Hi guys! My name is Edgar. I've recently been adding a bunch of backlinks to the site i work for, and most of them have a very high DA (DA > 80. Wohoo!). Nevertheless i'm often feel a bit frustrated when i check my site with the OSE, because just a few part of these links are showed in the just-discovered section, although i created them few days ago. So, i would like to know why is this happening, how long it take for my links to get crawled, and when can i stop getting frustrated on this? Than you very much! Edgar.

Not existing domains linking to my website (spam)
Hello, When i run my platform www.taobao.nl through https://mza.bundledseo.com/researchtools/ose/ i see a lot of nasty adult domains that link to my platform. These give a very negative (spam)score to my platform. I already disavowed quite a few via Webmastertools, but they keep coming. When i check the names in the Whois, they don't even seem to exist! (anymore) What could cause this and how can i end it?? Thanks for your help! Sander

Does Feedburner URL of the Home Page Carry Link Equity?
Hi There, During an SEO Audit, I found that OSE categorizes Feedburner URL of root domains under link-equity passing and followed. For example, the following link has been categorized under link-equity passing and followed: http://feeds.feedburner.com/SpoonflowerBlog I have heard that a lot of SEOs saying feedburner links don't carry any link juice. If that's true, then why does OSE categorize feedburner URL of root domains under link-equity passing and followed? I would appreciate if someone from the Moz staff could take some to answer this. Thanks.

Removing the clutter of site-wide links
I have a multi-part question with regard to the moz link index and some presentation suggestions. Firstly I would be interested to know how the link index treats site-wide links with regard to metrics such as DA, and PA. We all know that it is highly likely that SE's are unlikely to pass full link value across from sitewide links, and therefore it would make sense for Moz values to account for this as well - if they do not already. One annoying thing that also relates to sitewides is that they tend to clutter the much of the information presentation in a few of the tools (you can't see wood for trees as it were). This is most prominent in the "Just Discovered" page - if you have a sitewides on a large site, you can often find that this screen is just totally filled with these links as they are found. It would be very useful to be able to filter these out, as they are of little interest - currently I can't see a way of filtering them out. A further value where they create to much noise is the 'Total Links' value. Where sitewides are included in this value, the value actually becomes pretty meaningless as you can find that the majority of that value is sitewides. It would therefore be useful if there was another value for 'Total Links - Excluding Sitewides' where maybe value of 1 was just added to the count for a site wide

How Is a Page Crawled by Moz When Moz Says 'No Links'?
As above, really. I've crawled a new client's site to find the Moz crawler has identified a handful of 404 errors. The Moz crawler says these pages have '0 linking domains', and OSE has no data for these pages. So how are these pages being crawled by Moz and what should I advise my client?
