Subfolder cannibalization
-
Hello,
I looked through the forum but couldn't find an answer so here is my question:
A client have 2 subfolders that are selling the same things for example Furnitures, Office Furniture, Bedroom Furniture, etc.
The website looks like this :
But it's like 2 diferents brand, just that it sells the same kind of product.
The company wants to put evereything in subfolder1 and stop the subfolder2, which mean stop the second brand.
But the thing is that right now the subfolder2 have better positions in SEO than subfolder1 for most of the Keywords.
How could I make all the internet traffic goes from the subfolder2 to the subfolder1 ?
A 301 redirection could do the trick ? In addition of improving the SEO (Title, H1, Meta, etc) of the subfolder1 ?Thanks for your help.

Hello,
I'm getting back to you about a point in your answer :
"So you have to make clear that it is not 90% branded traffic , it should be more unbranded keywords. In this case - before I would do anything, I would try to figure out why subfolder 2 is ranking for these terms and why subfolder 1 is not."
I understood and one of the main Keywords is "muebles" (Furniture in english) but the pages are really similar.
Except for the basic "Title, Meta, H1, etc" are there others characteristics or feature I should look into ?Thank you

Hello Andreas,
Thank you for your answer.
Yes exactly, that's what I'm trying to do right now : Figure out why subfolder 2 is ranking better than subfolder 1.
Then I'll make the appropriate changes but because SEO can take a long time to update and if the company is in a hurry I wanted also like a backup plan to "accelerate" those changes if possible. So right now I'm analyzing the pages (Title, Meta, H1, H2, speed, etc) to look for keywords and see the differences.
If you have any more advice I'll be glad to read it.
Thank you.

Yep that would do it, but it is a little bit tricky with the brands. You know an "adidas predator" page will never rank for "nike air max" but both ar shoes.
So you have to make clear that it is not 90% branded traffic , it should be more unbranded keywords. In this case - before I would do anything, I would try to figure out why subfolder 2 is ranking for these terms and why subfolder 1 is not.

International SEO: can I choose only certain pages for subfolder?
For a client we are discussing international SEO options. I have pushed against CCTLD because they do not have the resources to manage multiple sites. Instead we want to go the subfolder route: .com/uk/ My question is whether we can properly create a subfolder version that only includes a handful of pages rather than the whole site - so 5-10 pages vs 4k. Is that possible? I'd love your thoughts. International SEO is not my strong suit. Also - if the subfolder for .com/uk/ content is almost entirely the same as the us-based .com is that a problem? Thanks!

Why do people put xml sitemaps in subfolders? Why not just the root? What's the best solution?
Just read this: "The location of a Sitemap file determines the set of URLs that can be included in that Sitemap. A Sitemap file located at http://example.com/catalog/sitemap.xml can include any URLs starting with http://example.com/catalog/ but can not include URLs starting with http://example.com/images/." here: http://www.sitemaps.org/protocol.html#location Yet surely it's better to put the sitemaps at the root so you have:

(a) http://example.com/sitemap.xml
http://example.com/sitemap-chocolatecakes.xml
http://example.com/sitemap-spongecakes.xml
and so on... OR this kind of approach -
(b) http://example/com/sitemap.xml
http://example.com/sitemap/chocolatecakes.xml and
http://example.com/sitemap/spongecakes.xml I would tend towards (a) rather than (b) - which is the best option? Also, can I keep the structure the same for sitemaps that are subcategories of other sitemaps - for example - for a subcategory of http://example.com/sitemap-chocolatecakes.xml I might create http://example.com/sitemap-chocolatecakes-cherryicing.xml - or should I add a sub folder to turn it into http://example.com/sitemap-chocolatecakes/cherryicing.xml Look forward to reading your comments - Luke0 -
Microsite Subfolder URL vs Redirected TLD for best SEO
We have a healthcare microsite that is in a subfolder off a hospital site. They wanted to keep their TLD and redirect from the subfolder URL. Even with good on-page SEO, link building, etc., they're not organically ranking as well as we think they should be. ie. They have http://our-business-name.com vs. http://hospital.org/our-business-name/ For best SEO value, are they better off having only their homepage as TLD and not redirect any interior pages but display as subfolder URL? ie. Keep homepage as http://our-business-name.com but use hospital urls for interior pages http://hospital.org/our-business-name/about/ Or is there some better way to handle this?

Subdomain or subfolder for each country
Hi all I have a great .com domain but the cctlds are not available so I plan on using the .com for all the countries and languages. What is the best approach for SEO: subdomains like wikipedia does (de.greatdomain.com) or subfolders (greatdomain.com/de)? I know this question comes up frequently on other websites but I would like to hear the Moz forum.

Correct Internal Linking Flow / Keyword Cannibalization
Hi, Would like some advice re our internal linking structure and possible keyword self cannibalization on our ecommerce site.. Will try and give you an overview. Imagine this page structure: Site

Brand 1
Brand 2
Brand 2 Shoes
Products
Brand 2 Sweaters Then say in Brand 2 Shoes page we have the shoes, e.g., the products labeled as Brand 2 Shoes "Name of Model"
Brand 2 Shoes "Name of Model" Now, what I'm worried about is that if I do a search for "Brand 2 Shoes" it should bring up my landing page right? But it doesn't, it brings up some of the products instead... I'm worried that we may be self cannibalizing some of the keywords - and thinking of changing the product page to be "Brand Name of Model Shoes" or "Name of Model Shoes by Brand" Any ideas or comments appreciated! Merging two different domains - subdomain or subfolder?
My company has two sites on different domains. We are considering merging the sites into one and keeping only the dominant domain. The dominate site is already a sub-domain of a larger organization so the new sub-domain would be two levels deep. I realize this is a little abstract so below is an example Dominant company site: company.root-domain.com Secondary company site: other-root-domain.com When they merge, everything will be on company.root-domain.com. Should it be other.company.root-domain.com or company.root-domain.com/other Note: The other site has several hundred pages. Both sites have strong authority and link profiles. I want to maintain as much of the value on the other site as possible with the merge.

Subdomain blog vs. subfolder blog in 2013.
Having read this ( http://www.seomoz.org/q/blog-on-a-subdomain-vs-subfolder ) & countless of blog posts on never to put your blog on a domain because a subdomain is treated as a different site & your blog traffic won't help with your main sites authority. I've always pushed for subfolder blogs. However I've been seeing a lot of blogs now and days saying that Google is now treating subdomains as the same site as your main site. http://www.brafton.com/news/subdomains-vs-subdirectories-for-seo-no-serp-benefits-for-subdomains-anymore http://webmasters.stackexchange.com/questions/34173/subdomains-vs-subdirectory-status-as-of-2012/34366#34366 ETC... What does everyone think? Is it acceptable to have a blog in a subdomain in 2013? Thanks!

Subdomains and SEO - Should we redirect to subfolder?
A new client has mainsite.com and a large numer of city specific sub domains i.e. albany.mainsite.com. I think that these subdomains would actually work better as subfolders i.e mainsite.com/albany rather than albany.mainsite.com. The majority of links on the subdomains link to the main site anyway i.e. mainsite.com/contactus rather than albany.mainsite.com/contactus. Having mostly main domain links on a subdomain doesnt seem like clever link architecture to me and maybe even spammy. Im not overly familiar with redirecting subdomains to subfolders. If we go the route of 301'ing subdomains to subfolders any advice/warnings?
