Canonical question for cross-listed product listings
-
We have products that are listed across multiple categories. This results in muliple urls for the PDP, for example:
mystore.com/shirts/shirt-101.html
mystore.com/shirts/pink-shirts/shirt-101.html
They make use of the canonical tag and point back to only one product listing url, however Google has indexed both urls in some cases.
Has anyone else run up against this and does anyone have advice on how this should be handled?

Thanks for the info. My concern is that there are some instances where Google is splitting the traffic between two PDP urls. I guess it's good to know it is a problem others have. From what I've read and what you've said, I don't see a solution without eliminating cross-listing of PDP's between relevant categories, and doing that (I think) would make for a poor user shopping experience.

Hi Liv,
There aren't quick solutions for these cases.
My usual approach is to rely on Google, its algorithm will eventually get the canonical tag.Its pertinent to understand that a canonical tag DOES NOT prevent a page to be indexed. The idea behind this signal is that Google would show the canonical version of the URL when it could have been the actual page.
I need to clarify this case, because when performing a site: search we will often find that canonicalised page there, but it usually does not get any traffic from Google.Another thing to consider IS UP TO GOOGLE to decide whether to honour and consider your canonical suggestion. I'd try that page in the URL inspection tool to see what Google is considering to be the canonical version.
And, last but not least, canonical works when two pages are (almost) identical, this is not a simple way to clean pages from google's index or to softly redirect traffic from one page to another without server redirects, I've seen this and many clients were really furious because it didn't work.Hope it helps.
Best luck.PS, just in case other users need it, some resources about canonicalization:

Canonical Tags on Parameter Pages With Hreflang
Hey Everyone: We are currently implementing hreflang tags on our site, and we have many parameter pages with hreflang tags; however, I am afraid these may be counted as duplicate content without canonical tags. example.com/utm_source=tpi href='http://example.com/de" hreflang="de" rel="alternate" href='http://example.com/nl" hreflang="nl" rel="alternate" href='http://example.com/fr" hreflang="fr" rel="alternate" href='http://example.com/it" hreflang="it" rel="alternate" I have two questions 1. Do I need a canonical tag pointing to example.com ? 2. On the homepage without the parameter, should I add self referencing hreflang tags? (href="http://example.com/" hreflang="es" Thanks so much for your help! Kyle

Rel canonical for partner sites - product pages only or also homepage and other key pages?
Hello there Our main site is www.arenaflowers.com. We also run a number of partner sites (eg: http://flowershop.cancerresearchuk.org/). We've relcanonical'd the products on the partner site back to the main (arenaflowers.com) site. eg: http://flowershop.cancerresearchuk.org/flowers/tutti_frutti_es_2013 rel canonicals back to: http://www.arenaflowers.com/flowers/tutti_frutti_es_2013). My question: Should we also relcanonical the homepage and other key pages on partner sites back to the main arenaflowers website too? The content is similar but not identical. We don't want our partner sites to be outranking the original (as is the case on kw flower delivery for example). (NB this situation may be complicated by the fact we appear to have an unnatural link penalty on af.com (and when we did an upgrade a while back, the af.com site fell out of the index altogether due to some issues with our move to AWS.) We're getting professional SEO advice on this but wondered what the Moz community's thoughts were.. Cheers, Will

NOINDEX,FOLLOW on product pages
Hi Can I have people's thoughts on something please. We sell wedding stationery and whilst we can generate lots of good content describing a particular range of stationery we can't relistically differentiate at a product level. So imagine we have three ranges Range 1 - A Bird Range 2 - A Heart Range 3 - A Flower Within each of these ranges we would have invitations, menus, place cards, magnets etc. The ranges vary quite alot so we can write good textual keyword rich descriptions that attract traffic (i.e. one about the bird, one about the heart and one about the flower). However the individual products within a range just reflect the design for the range as a whole (as all items in a range match). Therefore we can't just copy the content down to the product level and if we just describe the generic attributes of the products they will alll be very similar. We have over 1,000 "products" easily so I am conscious of creating too much duplication over the site in case Mr Panda comes to call. So I was thinking that I "might" NOINDEX, FOLLOW the product pages to avoid this duplication and put lots of effort into making my category pages much better and content rich. The site would be smaller in the index BUT I do not really expect to generate traffic from the product pages because they are not branded items and any searches looking for particular features of our stationery would be picked up, much more effectively, by the category pages. Any thoughts on this one? Gary

Panda recovery timeframe question
Site was hit by Panda Aug. 22nd. Lost 90% of Google traffic. I know 🙂 We think we found a reason and made few changes to landing pages structure. Updated sitemaps submitted. When can we expect effect (if any) - few days or after next Panda data refresh? Thank you!P.S. What is also interesting, similar traffic loss from Bing/Yahoo happened at exactly the same date. Does that mean Bing is "stealing" search results from Google when can't provide their own relevant results? 🙂

How do I get rid of rogue listings?
Unfortunately, Google has taken bits and pieces of my business and combined it with non-existent businesses and other rogue information. So now my business has 3 locations. One proper listing that I created and manage. One that uses my website address but nothing else is correct in the listing. One that contains my name(incorrectly), but the address and everything else about it is incorrect. I have reported these places many times but they continue to hang around and I am lost/confused on what to do next. Please advise.
