Does Dofollow links from forumn profiles, blog comments, business directories or article directories etc have any impact?

Hi guys,
So looking at my competitors in my city a lot of the people ranking on 2nd, 3rd pages and so forth have little or no quality backlinks, instead, their links are all from business directories, forum profiles and blog comments. I saw google employees saying easy to create links hold very little value and it's easy for the algorithm to distinguish been easy to obtain backlinks and difficult ones.
From what I see on my competition backlink profiles, they may not get them to the front page but they do get them to pages, two three and four. I was wondering if creating say 20-30 easy links per week and also focus on obtaining high-quality backlinks. Would they be any penalties for 20-30 easy to make links a week from Google?

OMG! NO!, Syndey. There are so many reasons why not to do that and like, zero, why you should. It's a trap many marketers fall into--"Well my competitor did it and look at their rankings." And then you become the next casualty in the SEO wars. At least you asked first. Many throw the spaghetti at the wall first and then ask questions about their penalties later.
I try to push people to read the Beginners Guide to SEO (and everything else you find) here because it is solid, whitehat information and that can be hard to find out there on the web. (And while I'm thinking about it, do pay close attention to the dates of anything SEO-realted that you read--if there is no date or it's more than a year old, don't waste your time) Fundamentally, it goes like this be patient and learn everything you can for a couple of months before you even think about making changes to your site. The reason is, if you do something wrong, the recovery process could put you/your site into a tailspin that you might not recover from.
Now, back to your competitors' links. Firstly, do you really know that those links are helping them rank, or do you just see them there and assume so? Remember, correlation is not the same as causation, as they like to say here. Secondly, it's not always or necessarily the links themselves that are of value but the pattern of link acquisition that Google pays attention to. If there was a way to view things as Google does, even someone relatively new to online marketing could probably tell the difference between a whole bunch of low-quality links from obtained in a relatively short amount of time (yes you would burn out of your tactic within a few months) and a strong link profile of slow, steady link acquisition from reputable, complimentary sites. If you were Google, which backlink profile do you think you would reward? Thirdly, do you know how many good links it takes to outweigh a bunch of bad ones?
It only takes ONE. Focus on getting that one and you and your site will be way ahead of the game--and your competitors.

Why do bots spam my wordpress blog comments?
anyone with a wordpress blog knows what i am talking about. but why do they do this? my theory is that it is for backlinks, but aren't all wordpress comment links nofollow? i am just curious as to what these robots think they are gaining by flooding my blog comments section. Thanks, Ryan

I have managed to land a few expert pieces on external sites for my company and would like to document that on our blog in the form of mini-blurbs which lead through to the article... but if I link back to it, is that bad practice?
Of course link sharing can be punishable if it is done to share juice, and I understand that on the surface it could look like link sharing, but in reality it would just be nice to document the different successes we've had. Thoughts?

Wordpress blogs and link generation
So I'm working on cleaning up our backlink profile and discovered that a few of our blogs are clogging things up... Google reports that one in particular is responsible for 454 links...

So I ran a quick sitemap to try and get a better understanding where these are coming from and discovered that all of the stupid tags and categories that the former marketing person posted her blogs to were creating new pages and counting new links from the footer found on each. So there were 370 pages counted by the sitemap generator. This explains why all the links. Now my questions 1.) how hurtful are all these links? 2.) what's the best way to handle links on company-sponsored blogs.. in sidebar widgets or embedded in the text? 3.) what is the purpose of those categories and tags? My boss seems to think they help in SEO efforts but I am insisting they are worthless and would like to remove them all. He thinks we should keep a couple per post... bleh Any advice here would be lovely. Thanks0 -
Are Directory Links a Good Source of Branded Links?
I am trying to increase the number of branded links for a few of my sites since the links are too heavily weighted on anchor text. If so, would you recommend a service like Directory Maximizer?

Build links through blogging?
Although my site is a wordpress site it presently has about as many static pages as blog posts. The site has a lot of directory links and is doing pretty good with a PR3 after about a year. When I first put the site up I had a well known blogging expert help me with the permalinks and a couple of other things and he said that with a blog there is no need to build links, it can all be done through natural link acquisition off of the blog posts. I was skeptical at the time because it seemed that a lawyer's site was something not a lot of people would be interested enough in to link to it. Now I am thinking about trying his stragegy, as 1 of my blog posts that I put up on a very topical subject immediately got about 15 backlinks. My questions are: Is it reasonable to try to build links just by posting frequent topical blog posts? If yes, should I have links in the blog posts to my home page, to internal pages, or both? \ Paul

Inbound links from porn sites into a professional business services site - remove help?
The website in question was hacked four years ago and there was porn on the servers. It was used as a peer to peer torrent streamer. The images were deleted. We have just found inappropriate inward bound links (with great link juice!!) - how can we remove these links - or should we? any advice would be appreciated thanks

Panda Update: Isn't a link still a link?
I was doing some link building and some SEO's said that the Panda update affected many websites. I am going to use eZineArticles.com as my example. EzineArticles was affected by the Panda update and does not show up in the SERPs as much as before. But they still have doFollow Links coming from the articles I am submitting. QUESTION: Regardless if EzineArticles was affected by the Panda Update, isn't a "Follow Link" still a "Follow Link" OR am I completely wasting my time on this devalued website? Edit: Yes I know a PR 0 page is not as valuable as a PR 9 page. I am asking from the standpoint of the affected Panda Update domains overall.

Impact of Internal VS Inbound Links
Internal linking channels juice being accumulated through inbound links and the two work as a team. I am interested to hear from those who have either tested or have a fairly good gut feeling about the impact of internal links on rankings (as an additional signal). Also in your opinion how does internal linking compare to external links pointing to the same page (e.g. impact of benefit/ranking gained through internal linking + inbound links as opposed to scenario where there is no relevant internal links at all). Conditions: Relevant anchor text used (or close contextual variation) Measuring impact on a single phrase (or relevant phrase variation) Internal links can be from unlimited pages on the same site (even site-wide) External inbound links can be only to the target page (disregarding inbound links to other pages). Disregarding layout based navigation as internal links and focusing on content based links only (contextual, editorial links). For example: Internal link ranking impact: 10% External link ranking impact: 90% Since this is a simplified model feel free to provide necessary clarifications below your estimate.
