Also be aware that Linkscape does not crawl the entire web, but about 25% of it, focusing on the highest quality sites. This is why Anthony was asking about the type of links and the type of pages they are on.

DMoz is definitely still valuable (although you can wait forever to get your submission approved), as are a number of other high powered directories. This is just a starting point for your link building, however. The best links come from relevant websites. Try combing through your competitors' backlinks (or better yet, use SEOmoz's competitive research tool) - it's typically a great way to get an idea of what link tactics work in your industry, and it can really help inspire you to step your game up.

Hi Antony,

What type of links were you building - directory submissions? If you're building links that are deep into a directory with thousands and thousands of pages, it can take a long time for Google/SEOmoz to crawl the page, if ever.
Try higher quality link building with websites in your niche - you'll find that these are picked up much faster and way more powerful than lower quality links. Build a great piece of content and market it to niche bloggers and site owners via e-mails and social media. Network with bloggers in your industry and set up a guest post on their website. Find an industry event and sponsor it publicly.
It's better to create one GREAT link every day than to build 100 mediocre links every day.

Should I use an informative outbound link when trying to market a service?
Having outbound links seems like a marketing no-no as you don’t want people clicking away from your website. However, if the link provides great information (at the end of your content) that explains and markets a service that you’re offering, is it okay to have that outbound link?

Link juice from links that are not on the page?
Hello, Thank you in advance for your help! I was doing research for backlinking opportunities by looking at competitor backlinks using Open Site Explorer and I ran into a puzzle. When I do an Open Site Explorer search for http://whatsdavedoing.com/ I find that link equity is being passed to the site from a number of pages on the http://www.travelsupermarket.com/ blog with the anchor text "What's Dave Doing" When I go to these pages and do a source code search I cannot find this anchor text. When I do a google search with the following: site:travelsupermarket.com "What's Dave Doing" I find that there are tons of items that come back with a list of blogs in their description: "Dec 5, 2013 - ... foXnoMad · Inside The Travel Lab · itravelnet · The Mad Traveler Blog · The Mad Traveler Online · Uncornered Market · What's Dave Doing?" Where is this coming from? What is going on here? Is this a linking tactic that sites use to pass link juice to contributors without linking to them directly? Any help is much appreciated! Thanks!

Alternatives To Link Detective
Hi, A while back I used link detective to scan through our OSE reports. However, it seems that the site is no longer maintained and the system no longer seems to work, ie I upload the CSV file and then when i check back it leads to a blank screen. I wonder if anyone knows of a similar software as its functionality was very useful. Thanks

How Do You Currently Analyze Outbound Link Profiles?
So I'm looking at some potential guest blogging &/or article writing opportunities and I'm looking for a tool which will analyze the OUTBOUND links from the site....it would be handy if inbound were displayed too but not essential as there are many tools available for this. When I ask for sample sites it is clear that a number of them (all?!) have been created purely for us content purposes, however it would be good to analyze the site further. A tool that could analyze its outbound links would give me a rough idea if the site is suitable or simply a glorified link-farm. Also, if you have any useful links regarding industry averages on outbound links for blogs & article sites (eg Ezine) for benchmarking it would be good! Thanks

Link Attack
Here is an interesting situation. Overnight SEOMoz is now reporting about 1.1 million new backlinks to my site. The links look like they were added in March of 2011 and they are all on porn sites and link back to me with the words like "Indian Sex", "Sex Bathe", and "insex." This appears to be yet another attack on my site and it looks like it happened right before the April Panda update that hosed me. As an example of one of the pages you can look at seapotentialdifference.com/inurlife/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=3081 and look for the link for Indian Sex. They linked to my forum and not the home page. At the same time SEOMoz discovered these links my DA dropped from 62 to 58. I'm wondering if anyone thinks these issues are connected. More importantly, does anyone have a suggestion on how to deal with this? For some reason the PA and DA of the porn site pages is above 70. This will probably be an ongoing battle for me since I am a journalist that covers the debt relief world and scammers don't like for me to expose them in an effort to protect consumers.

Anyone have experience with "Link Research Tools" ?
I'm looking into Linkresearchtools.com for competitive backlink analysis. Already have SEOmoz (obviously) and Majestic. Anyone have any experience with the toolset? If so, what does it do well, what do you like, and where does it fall down? Cheers
