Outgoing affiliate links and link juice
-
I have some affiliate websites which have loads of outgoing affiliate links. I've discussed this with a SEO friend and talked about the effect of the link juice going out to the affiliate sites. To minimize this I've put "no follows" on the affiliate links but my friend says that even if you have no follow Google still then diminishes the amount of juice that goes to internal pages, for example if the page has 10 links, 9 are affiliate with no follow - Google will only give 10% of the juice to the 1 internal page.
Does anyone know if this is the case? and whether there are any good techniques to keep as much link juice on the site as possible without transferring to affiliate links?
Appreciate any thoughts on this!
Cheers

Thanks Gareth, I will give that a go.
Just had a thought... redirecting it on my own site with a no follow in the robots.txt , wouldn't that still have the same effect as a nofollow on the actual outgoing aff link? that the 9 redirected links would still only give 10% to the 1 internal link?

Thanks Dan, yeah unfortunately for some of my sites there are dozens of links that have to be there.

Just do internal redirects on your affiliate links e.g. yoursite/go/affsite redirect to aff site.
You then block the /go/ folder in robots.txt
Hope that helps!!

Not that I can think of directly, there are lots of creative methods that I've seen used (but I can't vouch that they work.) I personally wouldn't worry about passing a little juice off to an affiliate site, unless you are talking about several (or dozens, or hundreds) outbound links on the same page.

Thanks Dan, do you know any way around this? so that the affiliate links don't diminish the link juice on internal links?

Your friend is right. If there are 10 links on a page, and 9 are marked nofollow, that 1 followed link is getting less juice than a page that has only 1 link on it. The division happens regardless to whether it is nofollow or followed. I believe I remember reading this on SearchEngineLand, or it may have actually been a Matt Cutts video. If I can find a reference to cite, I'll edit my post/add another comment.

GWT app and link emulation
Hi, I have a gwt site - https://www.whatiswhere.com. I have tab control which emulates the menu. I am planning to put <a>links instead of text into tab labels to create internal links. I am thinking to add java script to stop onclick event of</a> <a>otherwise i will get to the new session of GWT site. What I want is to just change the tab but at the same time have a link for the crawler. Would my approach work? Will it be equivalent to non-follow link? Will it improve the ranking comparing to 'no link at all' case?</a> <a>Thanks, Andrei.</a>

Can one back-link fluctuates ranking of website with thousands of back-links?
It happend to our website. We have seen major ranking fluctuations for our website because of one back-link. What kind of links those can be? Why Google is not stopping them even though they claim that such back-links will be taken care of?

Penguin Apply To Internal Linking?
Is Penguin focused primarily on backlinks or does it also assess internal linking/anchor text? We've lost about 3,000 visitors a month since the rolling updates were implemented. I'm always careful not to over-react to algo updates but enough time has passed that I think the dust has settled. I try to stay white in all I do but I think if I've over-done anything its the internal linking related products/categories with exact match. My backlink profile also has an over-abundance of affiliate links but that's kind of out of my hands isn't it?

Noindex, follow is a waste of link juice?
On my wordpress shopping cart plugin, I have three pages /account, /checkout and /terms on which I have added “noindex, follow” attribute. But I think I may be wasting link juice on these pages as they are not to be indexed anyway, so is there any point giving them any link juice? I can add “noindex, nofollow” on to the page itself. However, the actual text/anchor link to these pages on the site header will remain “follow” as I have no means of amending that right now. So this presents the following two scenarios – No juice flows from homepage to these 3 pages (GOOD) – This would be perfect then, as the pages themselves have nofollow attribute. Juice flows from homepage to these pages (BAD) - This may mean that the juice flows from homepage anchor text links to these 3 pages BUT then STOPS there as they have “nofollow” attribute on that page. This will be a bigger problem and if this is the case and I cant stop the juice from flowing in, then ill rather let it flow out to other pages. Hope you understand my question, any input is very much appreciated. Thanks

Aside from creative link bait, what's a solid link building strategy involve?
All things considered, directories, blogs, articles, press releases, forums, social profiles, student discount pages, etc, what do you consider to be a strong, phased, link building strategy? I'm talking beyond natural/organic link bait, since many larger accounts will not allow you to add content to their website or take 6 months to approve a content strategy. I've got my own list, but would love to hear what the community considers to be a strong, structured, timeline-based strategy for link building.
