URL Structure's Effect on SEO
-
Hello all,
I have a client who currently has a very poor URL structure. As it stands, their URLs are formatted in the following manner:
http://www.domain.com/category/subcategory/page
In all my years of SEO, however, I have always tried to implement the following format:
http://www.domain.com/category/page
The web designer for this particular project has been very reluctant to change the structure for obvious reasons, but I'm convinced that by modifying the URL structure, SEO will improve.
I am correct in thinking this?
Likewise, if I am able to get the URL structure changed, what do I need to look out for to make sure we don't lose any traction for our keyword terms?
Any and all insight/suggestions is greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading!

The way you structure the url has no impact on SEO performance (unless the url becomes very long & unreadable).
The depth of a site has an impact (how many clicks do I need from the homepage to get to a page) but this is completely unrelated to the folder structure. A good article on why it's good to have a certain structure in your url can be found here: http://www.bruceclay.com/blog/structured-urls/
As changing URL's always carries a risk & doesn't bring SEO benefit I wouldn't change them just for the sake of changing them.

Hi,
...but I'm convinced that by modifying the URL structure, SEO will improve. I am correct in thinking this?
Not necessarily. I tend to look at the site and product as a whole first and see which URL makes the most sense.
Imagine you are a new visitor - does the category / subcategory make sense and explain the product / service more readily than just the category / page.
It could very well be that removing the subcategory is the right thing to do, but you aren't going to be guaranteed a ranking increase if this is amended.

When Site:Domain Search Run on Google, SSL Error Appears on One URL, Will this Harm Ranking
Greetings MOZ Community: When a site:domain search is run on Google, a very strange URL appears in the search results. The URL is http://www.nyc-officespace-leader.com:2082/ The page displays a "the site's security certificate is not trusted." This only appears for one URL out of 400. Could this indicate a wider problem with the server's configuration? Is this something that needs to be corrected, and if so how? Our ranking has dropped a lot in the last few months. Thanks,

How do I reduce my vast number of errors that SEO Moz has picked up?
Hi, The number of errors on my site recently jumped up by 450. Most of them are duplicate page content and title errors. I am confused as to how the site suddenly got so many errors. I recently added a new sitemap extension to the site as I was told by my developers that it was hacked a couple of months ago. Please could someone help resolve these errors?

Implementing a new Nav Bar: Best practice, SEO benefit, your suggestions?
Hi Mozland, We are going to have a new Nav Bar for our site built from the horror that we currently have to up with. We want to make it a simple affair, similar to The Guardian two-tier Nav Bar - main menu which will drop down to the 2nd tier according to what you clicked on in tier one. Regular stuff, I think. Any suggestions, from your experience, about how best to implement this, what to include, what not to do, what can be included and done to make it as best it can be to get people to peruse our site as easily as possible? Thanks
