Hi Mozzers,

I'm looking for some feedback regarding best practices for setting up Robots.txt file in Magento.

I'm concerned we are blocking bots from crawling essential information for page rank.

My main concern comes with blocking JavaScript and CSS, are you supposed to block JavaScript and CSS or not?

In Magento, when entering product information, does the short description have to be different than the meta description? If they are both the same is this considered duplicate content?

Hey Moz community,

Really need help resolving duplicate content issues for an eCommerce utilizing Magento.

We have duplicate content issues with category pagination and categories found in multiple locations.

here's an example:

"www.website.com/style/sequin-dresses" is also found at "www.website.com/features/sequin-dresses"

*to resolve this issue do we just need to place a canonical tag on "www.website.com/features/sequin-dresses" pointing to "www.website.com/style/sequin-dresses"?

In addition, the category "Sequin Dresses" also has pagination. to resolve duplicate content issues with pagination do we need to implement a rel=next/prev tag? (we do not have a view-all due to the amount of products featured)

If anyone has experience with this or any insights on how to resolve these issues please let me know.

Thank you for the response, However, our competitor is the industry leader and that SKU is specific to that company. They have made these SKU's because they are solely searchable in SERP. Interestingly, the second and third industry sites have now made up their own SKU all using the same base number but different letter configurations. Ideally, our meta and keywords could include our competitors individual SKU's so theoretically we would rank along with their site search. It would be worth our time and effort if including this information in our meta and keyword if this tactic worked.

We are trying to distinguish if this would be a black hat practice or a competitive white hat tactic? Thoughts?

Through research our competitors have created independent product codes like FT-5750 and are using it as an independent SKU#, when I search this product code they are the only search result.

can we use their abbreviated SKU# in our meta tag or keywords to show up in the SERP?

Do you have any resources or tools you might suggest to help guide me along the SEO journey for optimizing an eccomerce site?

To sum it up I should make sure the site is properly themed or "siloed"?

I'll shift focus on writing for my audience and providing descriptions that leave no stone unturned, as for keywords I think I will follow your advice as less is better.

After analyzing the code on various competitors eccomerce sites I wanted to seek advice on best practices for marking up individual product pages for keywords and descriptions. My competition is all over the map as far as utilizing keywords and descriptions, some have few keywords while others have many and vice versa for descriptions.

What is the best method for marking up product pages on an eccomerce site for keywords and descriptions?

In addition, is it okay to utilize the same keywords for multiple products that may be under the same category? or is this considered duplicate content?
