Need a referee on article links
-
I need a referee on an issue.
I have hired a company that does a decent job of creating a social presence for our company and its web presence. But the main feature I hired them for was to create and cast articlesinto the social sphere with back links to our main site. This was based on a premise that backlinks still matter.
Instead the articles and posts they create are 1) posted on a separate url blog page maintained by them (but branded similar to our brand term) and 2) casts out to other social sites with back links to their 'blog-type' site, not our main site. In essence its a blog off the main url with articles/posts touting our product but linking back to the off site blog.
I have requested that all the articles created monthly by them and cast out into the social sphere containe anchor text appropriate hyperlinks to our main site, not the blog type site, and they are resisting. I am willing to make a switch if the premise of creating links to my main site still holds in the SEO world. Their assertion is that it doesn't.
They are getting the blog site to rank for certain key words that we also are trying to rank for and the blog site does have links to our site on their site such as an "our website" button. And they do create a lot of social activity buzz with twitter, youtube etc for our brand name. In all i like what they do except in two months they have created 305 back links to the blog and our main site has only 8. When they report they show me all the words the blog site ranks for, as if the main site doesn't exist.
But wouldn't best practice still be for them to create the backlinks to our main site, not the blog and worry more about how the main site is ranking, not the cast site?
Or has the SEO world changed so much that it doesn't matter. I want to be fair but I am drwaing a line in the sand on this.

Who owns the URL where the blog is located?
If they own it then they are being paid by you to build a brand that competes against you... and when you stop paying they will own a share of your business SERPs.
If you own it then you simply redirect the content to a folder on your own site and tell them to continue promoting.
Going back to the situation of them being the owner.... I think that you need to let them know that the content and promotion that you are paying for will be immediately redirected to a folder on your primary site.

Yes backlinks still matter.
Well it sounds like they are simply doing a different strategy than you expected. If you feel that the links they are getting are good clean quality links than I would opt to have them pointing to your main site (internal pages not the homepage, never link build to the homepage intentionally) - but if the links seem kind of dodgy then linking to a independent blog makes more sense because it provides a level of insulation against getting a penalty in Google. This is assuming that the blog is privately registered or under a different name, and on a different server as well.
I would make sure that the blog is optimized to drive traffic to your main site. Compare the total traffic numbers to the blog with your main site referring domain numbers.
Also, If they are linking to the blog and the blog is linking to you exclusively, you'll get some PR juice from the blog so all is not lost.

Write new articles or republish old ones?
Hi,
Content Development | | Enrico_Cassinelli
we run a tourism information website about a region in italy, and each year, during special occasions such as christmas, easter and so on we publish an article with a "what to do on Christmas / Easter / .... in the Langhe" (collecting events, activities, etc.). Is it better to "reuse" the old articles and change only the year in the title and of course the content (providing that we are gonna keep the URL without year), or to publish a new one? thanks!0 -
Need advice on internal links
I run a couple of gadget/technology based blogs, which essentially has news based articles and long form articles such as reviews, tutorials, and tips. Looking for some advice on the strategy for internal links: We have been using internal links in the following ways in articles so far: Links to the category pages at the end of the article (we call it related topics) Links to category pages wherever relevant preferably in the first paragraph. The logic here was that if we can add the link to a category in the first paragraph, which appears on the home page and category page, it will pass the link juice to the category page. Link to relevant articles, mostly by using the full title of the post as we thought that it stands out. Issues with the current strategy: In the case of the 1st strategy, it doesn't seem that natural, so we are not sure if people actually end up clicking them. In case of the 2nd, we have couple of concerns: it could result in linking to a category page twice. One within the article, and the second at the end of the article because of strategy 1. Because the first paragraph also appears on the category pages, it would mean that in some cases we will be linking to the same category page (recursive). In the case of the 3rd strategy, the problem is it does not appear natural so we are sure if it increases the value of the content. I was wondering if we should adopt the following strategy: Get rid of category links at the end of the article. Avoid linking to the category pages in the first paragraph, instead link to the category pages after the first paragraph, so we don't end up with the issue mentioned in b. i. Alternatively, we could remove the excerpts from the category pages so we don't hit the issue of linking to the category page from the category page. Add links more naturally. So have a sentence which talks about the related article and link to it using partial match (keyword phrase) or exact match. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Paid Guest Post Links - Value?
Hey guys, Just wanted to put the question out there about guest blogging opportunities that are paid for. It's not something we ever go for but a client has the resources to get a few quality paid backlinks. What are people's general thoughts on guest blogging - for a nominal fee - to do so? Pros and cons of the whole process? Cheers!

Wordpress Old Articles date - Update or Not
Hey there! Been reading around and I believe that there isn't a perfect answer to this question, but I surely want to know your opinion. It's a fact that google likes new content but also updated content, so whats your position concerning the wordpress articles. Meaning, when I decide to update articles from 2011 on its content, should I also update the date? If I make a search and an article from 2011 will be shown, its unlikely that I will click on it... So that you can understand my point.

Does using Articlebase articles on your site push your rank down?
Hello All, I launched a website (www.hrpayrollsystems.net) last year. I'm very new to the SEO world so I'm still seeing what works and what doesn't. We recently republished some articles from articlebase.com that I think may have hurt us in SEO. Does Google see our site as having duplicate content and then penalize us? Our top keyword isn't even ranking anymore when I put it in the sites that tell you where you show up. Help!

Can you link build without adding any content to the website?
I am an agency-side SEO who has a few different SEO clients. A couple of them absolutely refuse to add any content to their site - no blog, no articles, no link bait, nothing. They have resisted efforts for any content to be placed on their site - whether it is written by us, them, or a third party. They just don't see the value in it, despite my attempts to persuade them. As a result, these websites are just brochure websites. What are your options for link building in this situation? If content is the foundation of white hat link building, what do you do if the client refuses to add content to their site? All help gratefully received! Thanks

Old articles in a blog
Hi, I would like to know your opinion about old article obsolete in a blog. Do you think it's preferable to totally delete them from Wordpress CMS? Considering the fact that Panda update measures "Bouncing Rate", "Time on site", and all that? Thanks for your opinion and advice! (Sorry if my english is not perfect, 2nd language 😉 )

Duplicating Articles/Blogs
Two years ago, some articles and blogs were written and submitted to certain tech and news sites relevant to our field. Will it be fine to submit those to other sites now. It is our content only and not some one else, but would it be penalty to submit the copy to other article sites whereever those articles/content are relevant today also?
