The way you have to look at it is...
Best-case scenario: write completely original content for every one of your pages, and receive the highest ranking from search engines.
- OR -
Use existing content provided by manufacturers and not receive full potential in the SERP's. That's just the way it is.
I know exactly what you're saying though, don't get me wrong... writing unique content for 1,000's of pages can be a pain, especially if you're adding new ones on a regular basis. I just gave you the Pro/Con of your situation.
If you could ever find the time to write unique write-ups for every product, and get that out of the way, and then you're at a point where you're only adding a new product every week or so (even daily isn't that bad in terms of maintaining a website, really), then you'd be laughing and you'll see a massive difference in the SERP's as your content would be 100% unique and people would start scraping your site for theirs.
-
You are partially correct. Poor content is bad, too. You would need to spend a lot of time on making a system that generated substantial unique content, but it could be time well spent.

For someone starting out, this is really annoying.
Wow! You got great advice. Fantastic advice.
I think that you should reread it several times and hope that your competitor is not reading this thread.
Ressler gave you some of the best advice that you will get.

Other options:
Use reviews on your product pages (I'd suggest utilizing Schema markup - http://www.schema-creator.org)
Hiring out to college kids looking for a few bucks
Hiring freelancers

The best solution would be to work within your Content Management System to provide the best possible Title and H1 Tag for your customers, and then use an auto-generator to produce content. I work with companies that have less than 1000 products, so I don't have a lot of experience with the auto-generators, but it will give you a slight benefit.
If I were dealing with that many DVD's I would make landing pages for each Genre, some for major actors/actresses and major directors, and go after those niches while I hammered out the issues with my content management system.
-
Yes, Google will knock you for it.
Start with your most popular product, and work your way down. Also, make sure you write the content for the consumer, and not for your company.
Another suggestion I would have is personalizing your website. Brand yourself as an expert within the content, and mark the products that you suggest. If you have a favorite hammer, make sure people can quickly identify it.

Improve Site Performance by Removing/Replacing Widgets & Plugins?
We completed a Wordpress redesign of our website in December. The project took about 8 months. Important URLs on the new site are performing slowly according to Google Page Speed Insights. For instance, a key product page gets a score of 18 on mobile and 61 on desktop. Home page scores 37 on mobile and 80 on desktop. My new SEO believes the website is hindered by an excessive number of plugins and widgets. That reducing the number of these may increase performance. Also, my developers were unable to get WT3 Total Cache to work with our InMotion server and have used about 3 plugins for cache. We purchased a real estate theme (wpcasa) and heavily customized it. Any suggestions for improveing performance? If we recoded the website from scratch without a pre existing theme (using the existing design) would that speed up performance? Is there anything we can do remove complexity and improve URL download speeds? We are in a very competitive niche and we need decent performance in order to rank. Thanks,

SEO issues with removing a forum from a site
I'm thinking of adding a Discourse discussion forum to one of my websites. I'm not sure if it's going to be something that works well or not for the site. So I'm thinking ahead and wondering what Google issues I could have if after a few months of having the forum, I decide to remove it. What would Google think about all the then non-existent pages it might have indexed? Would there be a simple wildcard redirect I could do in htaccess that would satisfy that? Or some other thing I should do?

How to remove my site's pages in search results?
I have tested hundreds of pages to see if Google will properly crawl, index and cached them. Now, I want these pages to be removed in Google search except for homepage. What should be the rule in robots.txt? I use this rule, but I am not sure if Google will remove the hundreds of pages (for my testing). User-agent: *

All Thin Content removed and duplicate content replaced. But still no success?
Good morning, Over the last three months i have gone about replacing and removing all the duplicate content (1000+ page) from our site top4office.co.uk. Now it been just under 2 months since we made all the changes and we still are not showing any improvements in the SERPS. Can anyone tell me why we aren't making any progress or spot something we are not doing correctly? Another problem is that although we have removed 3000+ pages using the removal tool searching site:top4office.co.uk still shows 2800 pages indexed (before there was 3500). Look forward to your responses!

Is it possible to Remove Owner History from the GWMT?
Hello, As a site owner, I've worked with several SEO firms in the past. Even though a long time has passed, they still appear in the GWMT list of admins (though inactive). I wouldn't like other companies and consultants see that in the future. Is there a way to remove them? Thanks

What is better for google: keep old not visited content deeply in the website, or to remove it?
We have quite a lot of old content which is not visited anymore. Should we remove it and have a lot of 410 errors which will be reported in GWT? Or should we keep it and forget about it?

How to remove an entire subdomain from the Google index with URL removal tool?
Does anyone have clear instructions for how to do this? Do we need to set up a separate GWT account for each subdomain? I've tried using the URL removal tool, but it will only allow me to remove URLs indexed under my domain (i.e. domain.com not subdomain.domain.com) Any help would be much appreciated!!!
