All Thin Content removed and duplicate content replaced. But still no success?
-
Good morning,
Over the last three months i have gone about replacing and removing all the duplicate content (1000+ page) from our site top4office.co.uk.
Now it been just under 2 months since we made all the changes and we still are not showing any improvements in the SERPS.
Can anyone tell me why we aren't making any progress or spot something we are not doing correctly?
Another problem is that although we have removed 3000+ pages using the removal tool searching site:top4office.co.uk still shows 2800 pages indexed (before there was 3500).
Look forward to your responses!

Thanks for your responses. We are talking over 3000 pages of duplicate content which we have no removed and replaced with actual relevant unique and engaging content.
We completed all the content changes on the 6/06/2013. Im thinking to leave it for a while and see whether our rank improves within the next month or so. We may consider moving the site to another domain since its features lots of high quality content.
Thoughts?

I've had two sites with Panda problems. One had two copies of hundreds of pages in both .html and .pdf format (to control printing format). The other had a few hundred pages of .edu press releases republished verbatim at their request or with their permission.
Both of these sites had site-wide drops on Panda dates.
We used rel=canonical on the .pdf documents on one site using .htaccess. On the site with the .edu press releases we used noindex/follow.
Both sites recovered to former rankings a few weeks after the changes were made.
If you had a genuine Panda problem and only a Panda problem then a couple months might be about the amount of time needed to see a recovery.

That's hard to say. A recent history and link profile like yours won't give your site the authority it needs for index updates at the frequency you would like. It's also possible that a hole has been dug that you cannot pop out of simply by reversing the actions of your past SEO.
You really need a thorough survey of your site, it's history, and it's analytics to determine the extent of the current problem and the best path to take to get out of it. Absent that, shed what bad back links that you can and develop a strategy to build visitor engagement with your brand.

The site has not received a manual penalty from Google.
However traffic and generic keywords fell when the previous developer decided to copy all of the products directly from our other site top4office.com.
The site was ranking pretty well in the past. Do you have any kind of ETA of when the updates will take effect

Hi Apogee
It can certainly take several months for your pages to drop from the index so if you've removed the pages in GWT and removed the URLs they'll eventually fall out of the index.
Was the site penalized and that's why you removed/replaced the dupe content--meaning were you ranking well and then, all of a sudden your rankings tumbled or are you just now working to build up your rankings? This is an important distinction because there are few examples of sites that received a panda penalty (thin/duplicate content) coming back to life.
If you don't think you've been penalized and you're just working to optimize your site and pull it up in the rankings for the first time, consider how unique your content is and how you're communicating your unique value proposition to the visitor. Keep focusing on those things.
Also, your back link profile looks a bit seedy--in fact, your problem could well be penguin-related. If you were penalized and it was a penguin penalty, you should be looking to clean up some of those links and working to build new ones from more thematically relevant sites.

Removing duplicate content won't necessarily increase your search positioning. It will however, give your site the foundations needed to start a (relevant, natural and organic) link building campaign - which if done correctly should increase your SERP's.
You should see content as part of the foundations. Good quality and unique content is usually needed in order to be rankable but it doesn't make you rank necessarily.
Having good quality unique content will also minimise the chances of being hit by an algo update.

Site architecture, inner link strategy and duplicate or thin content HELP :)
Ok, can I just say I love that Moz exists! I am still very new to this whole website stuff. I've had a site for about 2 years that I have re-designed several times. It has been published this entire time as I made changes but I am now ready to create amazing content for my niche. Trouble is my target audience is in a very focused niche and my site is really only about 1 topic - life insurance for military families. I'm a military spouse who happens to be an experience life insurance agent offering plans to active duty service members, their spouses as well as veterans and retirees. So really I have 3 niches within a niche. I'm REALLY struggling on how to set up my site architecture. My site is basically fresh so it's a good time to get it hammered down as best as possible with my limited knowledge. Might I also add this is a very competitive space. My competitors are big, established brands who offer life insurance along with unaffiliated, informational sites like military.com or the va benefits site. The people in my niche rarely actually search for life insurance because they think they are all set by the military. When they do search it's very short which is common as this niche lives in a world of acronyms. I'm going to have to get real creative to see if there are any long tail keywords I can use as supporting posts but I think my best route is to attempt to rank for the short one to three keyword phrases this niche looks for while searching. Given my expertise on the subject I am able to write long 1000-5000 content on the matter that will also point out some considerations my competitors dont really cover. My challenge is I cant see how this can be broken into sub topics without having thin supporting content. It's my understanding that I should create these in order to inner link and have a shot at ranking. In thinking about my topic I feel like the supporting posts can only be so long. Furthermore, my three niches within my small overall niche search for short but different keywords. Seems I am struggling to put it all into words. Let me stop here with a question - is it bad to have one category in a website? If not I feel like this would solve my dilemma in making a good site map and content plan. it is possible to split my main topic into 3 categories. I heard somewhere you shouldn't inner link posts from different categories. Problem is if I dont it's not ideal for the user experience as the topics really arent that different. Example a military member might be researching his/her own life insurance and be curious about his spouses coverage. In order to satisfy this user's experience and increase the time on my site I should link to where they can find more dept on their spouses coverage which would be in a different category. Is this still acceptable since it's really not a different subject?

Duplicate Internal Content on E-Commerce Website
Hi, I find my e-commerce pharmacy website is full of little snippets of duplicate content. In particular: -delivery info widget repeated on all the product pages -product category information repeated product pages (e.g. all medicines belonging to a certain category of medicines have identical side effects and I also include a generic snippet of the condition the medicine treats) Do you think it will harm my rankings to do this?

Best practice with duplicate content. Cd
Our website has recently been updated, now it seems that all of our products pages look like this cdnorigin.companyname.com/catagory/product Google is showing these pages within the search. rather then companyname.com/catagory/product Each product page does have a canaonacal tag on that points to the cdnorigin page. Is this best practice? i dont think that cdnorigin.companyname etc looks very goon in the search. is there any reason why my designer would set the canonical tags up this way?

Duplicate Content
Hi, So I have my great content (that contains a link to our site) that I want to distribute to high quality relevant sites in my niche as part of a link building campaign. Can I distribute this to lots of sites? The reason I ask is that those sites will then have duplicate content to all the other sites I distribute the content to won;t they? I this duplication bad for them and\or us? Thanks

Same content pages in different versions of Google - is it duplicate>
Here's my issue I have the same page twice for content but on different url for the country, for example: www.example.com/gb/page/ and www.example.com/us/page So one for USA and one for Great Britain. Or it could be a subdomain gb. or us. etc. Now is it duplicate content is US version indexes the page and UK indexes other page (same content different url), the UK search engine will only see the UK page and the US the us page, different urls but same content. Is this bad for the panda update? or does this get away with it? People suggest it is ok and good for localised search for an international website - im not so sure. Really appreciate advice.

What constitutes duplicate content?
I have a website that lists various events. There is one particular event at a local swimming pool that occurs every few months -- for example, once in December 2011 and again in March 2012. It will probably happen again sometime in the future too. Each event has its own 'event' page, which includes a description of the event and other details. In the example above the only thing that changes is the date of the event, which is in an H2 tag. I'm getting this as an error in SEO Moz Pro as duplicate content. I could combine these pages, since the vast majority of the content is duplicate, but this will be a lot of work. Any suggestions on a strategy for handling this problem?

Should I robots block site directories with primarily duplicate content?
Our site, CareerBliss.com, primarily offers unique content in the form of company reviews and exclusive salary information. As a means of driving revenue, we also have a lot of job listings in ouir /jobs/ directory, as well as educational resources (/career-tools/education/) in our. The bulk of this information are feeds, which exist on other websites (duplicate). Does it make sense to go ahead and robots block these portions of our site? My thinking is in doing so, it will help reallocate our site authority helping the /salary/ and /company-reviews/ pages rank higher, and this is where most of the people are finding our site via search anyways. ie. http://www.careerbliss.com/jobs/cisco-systems-jobs-812156/ http://www.careerbliss.com/jobs/jobs-near-you/?l=irvine%2c+ca&landing=true http://www.careerbliss.com/career-tools/education/education-teaching-category-5/
