Social Media valuable for organic rankings?
-
Is there a link between ranking higher in organic search rankings and having a good social media presence.
I think there is, the more likes and followers you have the better.
The real question is how to you utilise it, do you regulary share content, put keywords in the share info for the ones you want to rank, how best can you utilise social media to help in organic search?
I suspect social noise is used towards some kind of overall quality score in the search engines.

Increasing page shares with targeted keywords (1-2) have helped me get rankings. Along with reviews (social) and video.

Agreed with comments on community-building and the broader value, but it does look like social mentions are having indexing and probably ranking impact. The Twitter connection is a little unclear, now that Google has cut the contract with Twitter for their direct data, but it does seem to be coming into play. Danny had a great interview on it with search engineers earlier this year:

It looks like Google+ is definitely coming into play, too, especially with personalized results. If you're logged in and have a Google+ account, chances are it's already impacting your rankings. This will probably only increase during 2012.

Social media does have a direct impact on SEO - links in Twitter, for example, are fed to Google with Twitter's nofollow attribute removed. But the impact of a single link in Twitter is far less significant than a link from a website where is will be seen over and over. The value of a Twitter link increases, though, with the influence of the Tweeter. So, the object is, as others have said, to create a community or, circle of influence.

Greetings Champion!
It is about establishing yourself as a "thought leader" in your niche, and being established as such Google will mark you as more relevant for that niche. http://www.seomoz.org/blog/the-best-seo-social-content-strategy-thought-leadership Should be a wonderful article to help you on this quest for Social Media Friend.

I would have to agree with Dimitar and say social media should be used as a way to engage your audience and create new networks. We try to use our social media to grow interest in our business and I also have found out increasing facebook fans have not helped in ranking so far.

It is about gathering a community and making it spread the word and not so much about seo stuff like keywords and so on. Even if ebay did not rank well on google people will still use it as much and talk about it as much.
But search engines do count likes +1s and so on so they are metrics now and yes the more the better.

Multiple language redirect, link building and social sharing
Hi all, I have 3 questions bother me for weeks, thanks advance for any answers. We are an online langauge school, provide many content about learn Chinese , the site is http://www.chinesetimeschool.com/ 1. Langauge issue. As you can see, It's a multiple language site, when a user first time visit the site, it redirects (302) the user to his own language. I have read many articles about this, most said 301 is good than 302. But 301 is a permanent redirect, so it can only implement on one language, right? For example, if we 301 redirect http://www.chinesetimeschool.com to http://www.chinesetimeschool.com/en-us/ for english speaking users, we have to use 302 redirect for other languages, ie, 302 redirect http://www.chinesetimeschool.com/ to http://www.chinesetimeschool.com/fr-fr/ for French speaking people. Or in other words, we cannot use 301 to redirect home page to different language page, right? In my understanding, it will mess up google which language page the home page redirects to. 2. Link building. Our editor created a lot content, but from Alexa we only see 85 links back, which means our content has few exposure. We want to get more links back especially for the English version, any advice? should we find a US company help us since we are in China not famliar with US? Any good company or guys good at link building/content exposure suggested? 3. Social sharing. We have around 300,000 followers on facebook, many content pages has hundreds of shares, for example, this page http://www.chinesetimeschool.com/en-us/articles/new-years-greetings-in-chinese/ has 129 shares and 333 likes (I use Moz open site explorer tool), but if I check http://www.chinesetimeschool.com/, only has 130 shares and 414 likes. So I think shares of a page won't be counted in the domain shares. This makes me thinking of 2 things:

A. Will social shares of home page be more important than other pages? If so, we need share more of our home page.
B. Even if we have a lot page shares, I didn't see any google traffic changes (for at least half year), will it mean social page shares has very few influences to google seo? Many thanks!

How do search engines understand what social pages are official pages of my brand? If my Facebook page name is not my brand name (even though there are links from website to page and vice-versa) will that confuse search engines?
My question is about social shares, and how search engines understand what profiles are linked to what businesses?

How long until Social Spam achieves the same notoriety/problem as Link Spam used to be
What are people's thoughts on whether or not social spam will become a major problem soon, just like forum profile/blog comment spam, etc, and what do you think the search engines will do about companies that are blatantly gaming the social signals game I.E. since social proof seems to be google's answer to combating anchor text manipulation and content farms, what do you think will be google's answer to combating the rampant social spam that will surely overtake us.

Which tool you best recommend for Social Media management, engagement, and monitoring. reputeme.com - trackur.com - viralheat.com - sproutsocial.com?
Please consider the pricing, ease of use, and accuracy, also, perhaps the social networks being monitored( as far as I am concern it's only trackur that monitors google+) Also if you have other recommendation, that would be awesome too. Thank you. PS: I love seomoz Social Media reporting, I just have other requirements too. Thanks.

Looking through Google analytics today and noticed that there is a section under top content that shows number of Facebook likes & shares, tweets, diggs, delicious book marks, etc. Anyone else seeing this? [staff note: see answers, this came from a Chrome extension]

If I move my blog from subdomain to root, will my blog lose all of its authority? Social signals?
Moving my blog from blog.site.co.uk to site.co.uk/blog and just wondered if all the social data for each post will be lost including the blog authority which has been built up over time? Is 301 redirects enough to keep any of it?
