How not to lose link juice when linking to thousands of PDF guides?
-
Hi All,
I run an e-commerce website with thousands of products.
In each product page I have a link to a PDF guide of that product.Currently we link to it with a "nofollow" <a href="">tag.</a>
<a href="">Should we change it to window.open in order not to lose link juice?
Thanks</a>

Dear Egol,
I'm assuming by your answer that PDF's take link juice and JPG's don't (please correct me if I'm wrong).
Is that the case even if I have <a href="">to enlarge the image? (I use href with JQuery and not regular target=_blank)</a>
<a href="">Also, what to do about the certificates that are on other sites? (too many and rapidly changing for me to get it to my site)</a>
-
Thanks,
I was assuming that these had product dimensions, how to use, etc information. I would want all of that content on my site.
If these are certificates then I would link to them as .jpg images and that eliminates concerns about link juice.

Dear Egol,
Thank for the reply. I'm guessing my example for product guides was not exact.
These are not guides but rather certificates of authentication which the customers expect to see. Some I have in PDF's, some in JPG's and some I refer to a cetificate page in another site. The question is what to do...I currently use "nofollow" links on all types of certificates (jpg, pdf and links to other site). What do you suggest to do?
I was considering either window.open (which I fear would look spammy) or leaving it as is...
Thanks

Just saying what I would do if this was my website.
My employees would be told that getting that pdf data onto the product sales page is a top priority job... and I would call the car dealer and order my new Jaguar.
-
I don't think having them indexed would do me any good.
The important page is the product page itself - the way I see it, there is no good reason to lose link juice for these guides...
I'm trying to improve my sites overall performance.
Important note...
Also, I have some cases where the manuals are pages on the manufacturer's site. Should I change these links from follow to JS links in order not to lose the juice from my site to other sites?
-
Are you just trying to streamline your product pages, or are you experiencing a specific issue with your product pages that you're hoping this will solve?
Linking to the PDF's via a javascript function should help preserve link juice and crawl budget.
You should only add those PDF's that have been indexed to the robots.txt if you absolutely do not want them in the index, otherwise it won't really do anything to help.
-
Due to your answer I checked and I see that some of the PDF's are indexed.
I didn't know that Google does that.
It is probably from the time that the links were not "nofollow".Should I exclude them using robots.txt?
-
Are the PDF's currently being crawled and indexed?
If you want to hide the PDF's from search engines, and preserve link juice, then a javascript method like you've mentioned ought to keep things wrapped up.
You could also consider some data capture, such as requiring an e-mail address to be entered before you see the download link.

How to set up internal linking with subcategories?
I'm building a new website and am setting up internal link structure with subcategories and hoping to do so with best Seo practices in mind. When linking to a subcategory's main page, would I make the internal link www.xxx.com/fishing/ or www.xxx.com/fishing/index.html or does it matter? I'm just trying to avoid duplicate content I guess, if Google saw each page as a separate page. Any other cautions when using subdirectories in my navigation?

Link juice and 301 redirects
Hi, I have a page with a lot of links going to it. I want to change the name of the page (thereby changing the URL). I can do a 301 redirect, but does a 301 send the "link juice" to the new page? The page in question is www.aerlawgroup.com/dui.html, and I want to change it to www.aerlawgroup.com/dui-lawyer.html. Thank you in advance for your time.

Internal linking with Old Content
Hello, I have a sports website in which users write their opinions about the sporting events that take place every day throughout the year. Each of these sporting events generates a new page or URL indicating the match with date. For example: www.domain.com/baseball/boston-v-yankees-04-24-2012-1234.html The teams face several times a year, and each match creates a different URL or page. I would like to link old pages to new pages and vice versa. How would you recommend these pages to be linked? Linking them to each other or linking old pages to new pages that are generated or otherwise? I would appreciate your orientation and help in this case. Thank you.

Do links hold there value after 12 months?
Hello, We need to find out if links that we setup, which are older than 12 months hold any value? Do new links hold more value than old ones and therefore should we let the old links become inactive? If we do let the links become inactive after 12month will that effect the PA/DA of the site?

Link to overall brand pages
On our website we have two ways to get in a brand environment. We have general brand pages and brand pages divided by category. At this moment the category brand pages get the most SEO value, because we have a link on our homepage to these pages (via the mega dropdown). The problem is that we would like to assign the SEO value to the general brand pages (with all the articles) instead of the category brand pages (with only articles within a category). We prefer to optimize the general brand page without a link to this page on the homepage for now. for example; Those two pages have the most SEO value

301 from a Link Directory
Hey guys. I am more looking for advice to confirm something on this one if anyone could offer help? My client has a reciprocal only link directory that is actually ranking higher than their company website. Surely from an SEO point of view, in this instance, it would make sense to kill the link directory and put a re-direct on the whole thing over to their main site? Would appreciate any advice on this one 🙂

Removing inbound Spam Links
Hello, Last February one of my clients websites was delisted. It turns out that some time ago that had attempted to launch a social network along time lines of ning. The project had fallen apart of the was still up. At some point spammers found it and started using it as part of a link farm. Once it was discovered, the subdomain it was posted on was removed and the website returned to search within 2 weeks. Last week, the website disappeared again OSE shows that in the last 2 months the website has got 2000 (There are about 16,000 total spam links) additional spam links now pointing and the root domain. On top of that, Google Webmaster Tools is reporting about 15,000 404 errors. I have blocked Google from crawling the path where the path were the spam pages used to be. If there a way to block the 1000s of inbound spam links?
