Social Media Campaigns
-
Hey SEOmoz Community,
I have a couple questions about social media campaigns. Which KPIs do you use for social media campaigns? How do you determine realistic campaign goals?
I am looking at projecting the number of followers/fans and the amount of traffic a site can expect to see as a result of this growth. Any suggestions.
Thanks!
Geoff

In the first case traffic, in the second increase of fans/followers. But in my case I was especially referring to small business presence in social media.
In the case of big Brands, I suppose that a well planned social campaign could lead to bigger numbers. That's what I see happening here in Spain with a very nice campaign for a Ron (Ron Brugal) that targeted university students: it was a very savvy mix of social, viral and offline marketing.

Hey guys, thanks for the great responses. At this point I feel like the question becomes how to set reasonable goals for the increase in the number of followers/fans as well as accurately predicting how much traffic will be sent from a Twitter profile or Facebook page. I think I'm looking more to understand a methodology rather than a number. Any suggestions?
Gianluca, with the percentages you mentioned, were these estimates you use for traffic or followers?

I agree so I will keep it short : )

Wow... tough question Geoff. Each campaign will obviously have different KPIs depending on the medium/media targeted.
I normally set the following KPIs as a base to work from:
- Increase in fan followers
- Increase in engagement %
- Increase in "spread" of messages
- Increase in conversions
- Increase in traffic to other digital assets
- Publicity value
- Increase in database subscribers
That's the baseline, but KPIs are then made a lot more specific depending on the medium of the campaign.

Hi Geoff,
personally when it comes to social media campaigns I look at two KPI:
- Traffic generated from the campaign to the landing page + conversions generated by the campaign itself
- Number of new followers/fans the campaign generates and, therefore the "long term" traffic growing to the site.
The % tend to be different, obviously.
In the first case (short term results of the campaign), I consider a success an increase around the 20% - 25% and a conversion rate of 5% . Obviously, to obtain those % the campaign must be very strong.
In the second case (middle/long term results), the KPI is to increment the traffic from Social the source of the 10% - 15%.
Obviously, those % have to be tailored depending on the topic of the campaign and the kind of business behind the campaign. For instance, in B2B social media campaigns the short terms % tend to be lower, while the long term one can be bigger (and viceversa when it is B2C),

Is social networking really worth all the effort?
Call me old fashioned, but I can’t understand the buzz about social networking, I really don't get it, who in their right mind spends their valuable time conversing with a bunch of narcissists, chattering about what’s on TV, funny pictures and bragging about what they’ve done or achieved, it all seems so phoney to me. My site is reasonably popular, I get a rough 50/50 split of my visitors from referrals and organic and an infinitesimally small amount of traffic from social – Oh yes I hear you say,” that’s because you haven’t fully embraced social networking.” But here’s the thing, my social traffic doesn’t come from me at all, it comes from followers of my own social network (forums and user of my software liking and sharing my products and content), who have kindly shared on my behalf. Now when I visit Analytics to study the data from social traffic I find that it gives a huge bounce, 100% from Facebook, 93% from Twitter and 79% from LinkedIn, when my average is just 39%. The same applies to time spend on each page, less than a minute for all of the social sites, when my average in close to 7 minutes. So ok, social networking for traffic is a complete no go, let’s look at it from the perspective of out reaching. How can I break into that? I hate TV, I don’t find pictures of cats funny and I’m modest and humble, how can I possibly even begin to converse with these people? After using Twonk I got followed back by a good amount of users, but had to delete most because of the complete crap they were sharing, do I really want to know that someone ate lasgne for dinner, read about the top ten english railway stations, or what colour lego brick is someones favourite! Honestly I’m not trying to be funny with this post, and no offence to anyone here, but I just don’t get social networking, I’d love to but it seems a complete waste of my time and effort.

Suggested Social Stream Solution for Wordpress
Hi, I was looking for some ideas on Wordpress for social streaming. What I am looking for is to show my activity in the right sidebar of a blog. I would like to capture this in an attractive way. My site has a lot of pictures so visual is very important. Now having some some searching there are a thousand "share this" type plugins. My need is different in that I want to show the activity of what I am sharing in: FB, Pinterest, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram. I found this plugin below that has several nice formats. Since the column is 325 wide I can easily use one of the longer streaming looking options. http://codecanyon.net/item/wordpress-social-stream/full_screen_preview/2201708 http://codecanyon.net/theme_previews/2201708-wordpress-social-stream?index=1&url_name=wordpress-social-stream Let me know if you have some other suggestions. One thing I don't want to to is tank page load speed. In this I could not elect to rotate. Nonetheless, this is what I am hoping for so I would welcome your feedback. Thanks,

Remove Social Side Bar?
We recently had a site-redesign and since have lost traffic. We’re currently trying to clean up our code and improve site speed (which we know has become a very big problem). One of the things we tested was removing the social side bar. With that gone, our page speed, file size and requests to the page all improved greatly. And other than the homepage, we don’t see a lot of action on the social side bar with our internal category and subcategory pages. With side bar: http://www.motivators.com/ Without: http://www.motivators.com/Trade-Show-Giveaways.html We resubmitted the Trade Show Giveaways page to Google Webaster Tools yesterday and saw a 22-spot jump in ranking by this morning! Given the circumstances, would it be unwise for us to remove that social side bar? Would it hurt us to lose those signals in the long run despite the overnight jump? Which is the lesser of two evils?

Social media profiles with same description - Duplicate content or reinforcing business details?
Hi, I am currently doing a Social media review and find myself wondering whether having exactly the same copy - or part thereof, on a businesses' Facebook, LinkedIn, G+, Twitter, profile(s) is likely to be viewed by SE's as a good or bad thing? Is it duplicate content and to be avoided? Or would it be viewed as a case of the business trying to ensure a consistent profile and therefore reinforcing your business details?

Using a Social Media Infrastructure
I just wanted to share a technique I have had a great deal of success with called a Social Media Infrastructure. It has really increased the amount of followers on all of the social media sites I have been using. The first link explains a Social Media Infrastructure and the second link is somebody using the social media infrastructure whom has implemented the technique much better. http://kylelacy.com/social-media-seo-social-media-infrastructure/ http://brianwong.com/blog/how-to-automate-your-blog-workflow-and-increase-your-search-engine-ranking/ It does take some time to get all set up correctly, but it has increased my followers a ton. I am not going to claim that it gives you all the links and as much SEO benefit as they claim, but it does give your social media some muscle.

Misplaced social media metrics comparison tool
Hello, I can't seem to find a social media metrics comparison tool that showed me the number of Facebook Likes/Shares, Tweets, etc. compared to a site's competition. Does anyone have any idea what this may be? I scanned through all of my SEO Tools and can't find it.
