Developing location pages
-
I need to expand our service offering to another city and focus our SEO efforts to that new location. Would it be best to purchase a new domain name and make a new website very similar to the existing website so we can better target the search engines? Same look and feel as the existing website.
Or would it be better to create a landing page for the new location on the existing website to help stengthen the current domain name? If so, how do i focus the SERPs to the new location when the existing website is so focused around my current location?
-
I agree mostly with those above stating dont build a new web site.
Just to be different though - another option is a local sub domain. e.g. chicago.yourwebsite.com. This has advantages such as keyword in the domain name, it receives some link juice from the root domain and depending on your keywords you could get your root domain and sub domain in the same search results.
That said I have actually advised against this in the past as a sub folder on the root domain still has more chance of ranking well than the sub domain for lots of reasons I wont go into now.
-
I recommend not building new website.
Your time would be better spent building more quality links to the current website and to a subpage optimized for your new city. Expanding your service area will create many new opportunities to generate links including press & news releases announcing your recent expansion, local niche directories, new client websites, local news sources, local organizations & groups, etc. Increasing your current website's domain authority and building your subpage's page authority with these new links is where I would spend the majority of my time.
Also, when you create the subpage for your new service area be sure to include the "city name" and your service's target search term(s) in your title tag, meta description, headers, image atl tags, URL, internal links, and unique content. Also, if you have a phone number and address specific to that location, I would include those (search engines recognize area codes and addresses). If you have a physical location in your new city, create a new Google+ page with your new address, phone number, and use the city specific subpage as your website.
Good luck.
PS- PPC might be a good temporary option to increase awareness in your new location, while your subpage moves up the ranks.

"A dedicated landing page on the same domain is the best soultion. Make sure to target variations of the keyword and location."
So long as you don't have your current city within the domain itself...
If you do, then a new domain may be necessary.
Otherwise, make sure the new city is in the URL, title tag (etc., you know the score ) and ensure you mark up the address with microformats.
ALSO : some sites have their business location in the footer across all pages - make sure this isn't the case on the page targeting the new city...
-
Agreed. A dedicated landing page on the same domain is the best soultion. Make sure to target variations of the keyword and location. Keep in mind that most of organic search traffic will be generated from the local results. Here is a little secret in ranking in neighboring cities for local results even if you do not have a physical address there.
- Find a local office building that rents out suite numbers. Ask to purchase the mailbox associated with an empty suite. Most office buildings rent their vacant suite mailboxes for $20 a month, Fill out a google places profile reflecting this new location in a neighboring town and BAM! You will now rank in local results in you neighboring town.
Make sure not to spam you local listing and build quality citations from local business around your area.
Press Releases really help as well! Hope this helps.

Build a dedicated page with unique content for that city, and build local links FROM the city you are targeting.
If you are targeting "new york rocks" then build a page in your site www.domain.com/newyorkrocks and then build links from within New York to the NYR page on your site.

Hi! We're going through some of the older unanswered questions and seeing if people still have questions or if they've gone ahead and implemented something and have any lessons to share with us. Can you give an update, or mark your question as answered?
Thanks!
-
Thank you for your reply and i think my question may have been a bit confusing. I meant to say City, not location as in a physical location.
Currently, we focus our services to the city we live in, however, we want to also start focusing our services to another city.
From my understanding, you are suggesting to expand the existing website and eventually create a new website down the road?
If so, how do i modify my existing website to focus on the additional city without duplicating the same information already on the website?
Basically, all our services are the same, we just want to focus on another city at the same time. But in our industry, when people are looking for information on our services, it's an advantage to see the website is focussed on their city.

I always say, don't build a brand new baby website for your existing brand unless you're absolutely sure it's necessary - you're going to have to work hard to get it even just to the same level as your existing website, let alone beyond it. Plus, why cut your link profile in half? I'd definitely say build a page or section on the new location. Some things you can do to help SEs figure out you're in 2 locations:
- Make sure both locations are in Google Places or other local services. I highly recommend Universal Business Listing for this - one submission to UBL will put your business info everywhere it should be to send strong local signals. Well worth the low price.
- Mark up the addresses of each location on your site with hcard microformat - this says to search engines "here is an address." here's a wiki with everything you could possibly need on hcard microformat: http://microformats.org/wiki/hcard
- Upload a KML sitemap with your locations to Google Webmaster Tools. Here's a good guide on how to do that: http://www.martijnbeijk.com/tutorial/using-kml-for-local-seo/
- Use your city name in the title tags of pages that are about that specific location.
Best part about those last 3 suggestions - you can do them all for free.
Good luck!

Different meta tags appearing in SERP for same landing page
Hi all, hoping someone can help. We have a landing page that ranks quite well for a number of keywords that send us a nice amount of organic traffic. We understand the importance of Meta tags, as Google will be the users first interaction with our site we want to stand out and be noticed and also show we provide information on their search query. The problem is this, while we have optimised the title and description tags for the landing page, this is only appearing on specific search results. If you were to search a different keyword, you would still get the same landing page, but the title tag and description would not pull through, it decides to pull through the page name and first few lines of text instead. Is there anything we can do to sort this issue?

Should the Facebook page be just the brand name or also include keywords?
Hi. Do you recommend that a company's Facebook Page be just the Brand Name, or should it include some keywords in the title?

1 Website, 2 Business Names, 2 Locations
I took on a dentist office as an SEO client. They have 1 website, 2 business names and 2 locations. Each location has it's own business name. They are both within the same city as well. I'm not exactly sure where to start with them since they have 2 different business names. If it were 1 name with multiple locations I would just create a Contact Us page for each one, but is that the best thing to do when the location names are different? Should I create a different website for each location or is that smart because then they are competing against each other? Any help from the community on the direction I should take would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Changing My Home Page Focus Keyword
Hello, We recently launched a new home page design on our company website, but we still have the same focus keyword in the title, H1, and in parts of the page copy. However, this focus keyword no longer represents our entire brand. We want to change the focus keyword and have done some research on the keyword difficulty and local searches in Google, but are still uncertain on the potential effects. Let me explain our situation more in depth. Instabill provides business owners with merchant accounts and other services. Our current focus keyword is offshore merchant accounts. However, over the past three months, we have been helping businesses establish US merchant accounts (retail, mobile, and online--but retail and mobile to US only while online to merchants everywhere) and intend to continue to increase our US merchant base. We are also still able to provide offshore merchant accounts. Our fear is that when a US merchant comes to our website (http://www.instabill.com), they will see Offshore Merchant Accounts in big H1 letters and leave our site since they want a local US merchant account. However, we still want to make sure our international merchants know we can still work with them. Thus said, we would like to change our focus keyword to something more broad, but still descriptive of our brand: merchant services. To elaborate, we want our H1 heading to read Merchant Services for Retail and Online Businesses. Merchant services is more descriptive since we provide more than just merchant accounts. We also provide the payment gateway, free shopping cart modules, help registering businesses, help obtaining an SSL certificate, and a discounted PCI Certification Service through McAfee. We have more than one page on our website that ranks for the term online merchant accounts, but none that rank for merchant services. However, we are willing to put in the work to ensure we optimize our website properly and put in the effort to make the change successful. Merchant services is also a keyword we would like to optimize on our website, so making the change on the home page will only help the steps in the process. Statistics:
Branding | | Instabill
Offshore Merchant Accounts has a 35% difficulty level and we consistently rank for SERPs #1 and #2. This term, according to the Google Keyword Tool, only receives 70 monthly searches in the US, 50 in the UK, 10 in Canada, and 10 in Australia. These are the four countries of most importance to our website. Merchant Services has a 57% difficulty level and we do not rank for it in Google at all since we have never tried to optimize for this term in the past. Also according to the Google Keyword Tool, this term receives 14,800 monthly searches in the US, 1,600 in the UK, 590 in Canada, and 260 in Australia. Clearly, merchant services could potentially get us much more traffic than offshore merchant accounts if transitioned correctly. I suppose my bottom line question is this: Would it be a bad idea to change my primary focus keyword on my home page? What type of results should I expect to see if searching Google for my company name? Thank you for all of your help. Meghan

Listing multiple business locations
Greetings, I had a quick question that i was unable to find an answer for so i wanted to see what you guys think. I am currently working on getting our business situated on sites like Yelp, Hotfrog, Bing business portal, etc., and on a lot of these sites i have to add each of our three store locations individually. I wonder when i put in the name, if it makes more sense to just put the business name as "Business Name" or wether i should identify each location separately in the name as "Business Name + City". I was just curious if there is a reason i should do one or the other, or since we plan to make sure it's listed the same way everywhere, does it not really matter?

Has anyone had problems with thier google maps page after the google plus intergration?
About a month ago Google contacted one of my clients to inform them that the Google places is discontinued and their Google plus page will be the new Google places. They gave my client an $100 adwards credit for adwords express so their location will still show up for their business name during the change from Google places to Google plus.. When you type in the business in a local area or on a GPS now.. It is no where to be found. You have to know the address to get directions or go there on a mobile devices. The Google plus page for all of these locations is not currently showing up either. I have contacted Google and Once again something has been released without implementing it correctly. No one seems to know what is going on... after talking to three people. Does anybody know what is going on ???? This is a huge deal when being a local company.

Google+ business pages and Schema.org
Hi All, I'm an SEO for a company that runs a number of brands. I'm in the process of setting up the Google+ pages for these brands and decided to watch the Microformats & Schema.org - Real life Use Cases - Mozinar by Richard Baxter and the Online Reputation Management: Branding for SERP Domination Mozinar by Rhea Drysdale to help understand the best way to achieve this. One of the suggestions by Richard Baxter was to include the authorship schema.org, but I can't see how this can be done for an organisation instead of an individual. My question is, how do you manage authorship when your not able to link websites to Google+ business pages, only profiles? How have you managed this on SEOMoz for example? Hope you can help. Thanks Jojo

What are the best/ your favourite brand pages?
I've got a meeting today where we are looking to come up with some ideas to redesign our brand pages which are currently a bit rubbish www.schuh.co.uk/brands/converse Does anyone have some great pages that I could look to for inspiration? Idealy i'd like to get not only get SEO benefit, but also be able to use them for PPC landing pages as well as the page giving some good info on the brands we are selling. It would be great to get video on the page but this always serves to either push the product further down or get lost at the bottom. Any ideas or examples would be much appreciated!
