Old massive site, should I nofollow all out going links?
-
The company I work for is in the process of rebuilding our entire website profile.
Our biggest site, FrenchQuarter.com ranks pretty well for our main term "French Quarter Hotels" And we use that to drive business directly to our hotel businesses. The site is very old and one I inherited, rebuilding it won't be a priority for another 9 months or so. This site act's as a bit of a directory for the city. There are links everywhere and it's probably passing link juice to a lot of businesses scott free.
In the mean time would it benefit or hurt us if I went through and no-followed most of the links? Would nofollowing links help frenchquarter.com to rank any better than it does? And could I then direct some of that link juice directly at our hotel websites to boost those as well?
My goal is to get our hotel websites to rank 1st page, we get exposure in the locations pack, for 2 of our 5 hotels, but placing below that is impossible with all the competition from the OTA's (expecia, bookit.com, etc) Seems near impossible no matter what my backlink profile looks like.
Thanks for any feedback,
Cyril

Vizergy,
Thanks for your input. I am definitely aware of the way our on page SEO sucks at the moment. Like I said in opening I inherited this beast about 6 months ago. Our rankings didn't suffer at all through panda and penguin, so I've left it alone, we actually got a boost from it.
This site is a total cluster f**k at the moment, and like I said we are scheduled to over haul it in about 9 months. It's built on a make-shift cms that's integrated with travelocity in some twisted way. It generates some affiliate revenue for us, but the focus is on our brick and mortar businesses. With the summer being a slow time for our industry in this area. I was contemplating a few ways to boost our physical businesses by leveraging this site.
I'm going to take your advice and do a bit of on-page clean up for our hotels section.
Thanks

Hi Cyril,
As an SEO that specializes in hotels, and has for years, I thought I would share a bit of experience with you. I can not stress the importance of On Page SEO in our industry. Links are, of course, important, but On Page can not be ignored. I hope you don't mind but I took the liberty of quickly going through your site and I have some suggestions that I believe will help you to achieve the rankings you are looking for. Each page of your website should have a clear and definite focus i.e. the focus for the hotels page should obviously be French Quarter Hotels etc... the page's focus needs to be reflected in each page's Title, Description, alt text, H1 and all through out the content. No pages should have the same title or description (they all appear to be the same right now). Unless you are using the keyword tags for internal reporting (we do) you should drop them. If you do use them clean them up (right now the terms in them are far too broad and there are far to many). Internal linking should be structured to flow for the user etc... just basic stuff. With your current link profile and the age of your site a good on page clean up should be all you need.
Good Luck!

Hey Chenzo thanks for the reply as well,
In the grand scheme of things I would just like to leverage what we already have from sites we own. If I can squeeze out a bit more link juice by no following competitors, I think that makes sense.
-
I think the keyword here is variation.
If the ONLY links you have that are followed to sites you are trying to help benefit and nofollow everything else.
No bueno.
I have started to see - if it doesn't make sense, it probably won't rank.
-
They are being weasels.
They are willing to link to you but they don't want to help power your site.
-
Majority of large name brands have nofollow on their sites mainly because its not manageable. Think about all these pages and posts they would have to filter and remove and say ok this should follow and this should nofollow.
They don't benefit from it, so they just nofollow all of it. However, I thin TP has a blog or top ten list sometimes, which then they would have a follow link.
This is the majority for most large sites/companies.

Thanks for the response EGOL,
I notice our hotels get a lot of backlinks from tripadvisor, of course they are all no follow links. Is tripadvisor communicating that to google as well? A major brand with healthy PA telling google, "we know these guys are who they say they are, but we don't trust them with our brand name"?

The last public statement on how pagerank works on nofollowed links from Matt Cutts is....
"Pagerank on a nofollowed link does not pass to the target site, instead it simply evaporates. So, if you nofollow the link, your site will gain nothing and the target site will gain nothing." What you really communicate is.... "they paid us!".... or ... "we don't trust them".
Of course google could change their mind about how they do this and they could have changed it already and not told anybody.
-
Theoretically it should benefit you if you nofollow those links based on the fact that you are giving them juice.
Putting follow links to your own hotels will indeed help the rankings because it is a more authoritative link rather than a nofollow link.
Also, because Bookit and Expedia rank better, it doesn't mean you can't have a more captivating title and description. If you are ranking near the others, you can easily just put more attractive titles to get the user's attention.

Old site selected as canonical on GSC 3 years after migration?
Recently my company started consulting for a SaaS company. They're clearly the best known, most trusted company on their area of work and they have the strongest brand, best product and therefore more users than any of their competitors by a big margin. Still, 99% of their traffic comes from branded, despite having 3x more domains, better performance scores and more content. Even using tools such as SimilarWeb for comparing user satisfaction metrics, they seem to have lower bounce rates and more visits per session. Still, they rank for almost nothing that is non branded on Google (they rank extremely well for almost everything on bing and DuckDuckGo). They don't have any obvious issues with crawling or indexation - we've gone to great depths to tick off any issues that could be affecting this. My conclusion is that it's either a penalty or a bug, but GSC is not flagging any manual actions. These are the things we've identified: All the content was moved from domain1.com to domain2.com at the end of 2017. 301s were put in place, migration was confirmed on GSC. Everything was done with great care and we couldn't identify any issues with it. Some subdomains of the site, especially support, rank extremely well for all sorts of keywords, even very competitive ones but the www subdomain ranks for almost nothing on Google. The www subdomain has 1,000s of domains pointing to it while the support has only a few 100s. Google is performing delayed rendering attempts on old pages, JS and CSS particularly versions of assets that were live before the migration in 2017, including the old homepage. Again, the redirects have been in place for 3 years. Search Console frequently showing old HTML (at least a year old) in cache despite a recent crawl date and a current 301. Search Console frequently processing old HTML (at least a year old) when reporting on schema. Search Console is sometimes selecting pages from the old domain as the canonical of a URL of an existing page of the current domain, despite a long-standing 301 and the canonicals being well configured for 3 years now. Has anyone experienced anything similar in the past? We've been doing an analysis of old SEO practices, link profile, disavow... nothing points to black hat practices and at this point we're wondering if it's just Google doing a terrible job with this particular domain.

Are links still considered reciprocal if the link from one website is rel="nofollow" and the other isnt ?
Im working on a site that has some press coverage due in the next couple of days from quite a big site in the niche. The press outlet has requested that we link back to the content they post about us, they said the link can be rel="nofollow" if we'd prefer. Id really like to get the full benefit of the link back to our website, obviously if i did a straight link back to the 3rd party press site the links would be reciprocal and cancel each other out in terms of "link juice", but i was wandering if we make our link back to the 3rd party rel="nofollow" will we still get the full benefit of their link to us in terms of link juice ? ie. having the link back to them, but nofollow wouldn't been seen as a reciprocal link. ? (Obviously either way there is still benefit of having the link even if it reciprocal as it will send traffic to our site, but just no "link juice") Note - Ive used the phrase"Link Juice" for lack of a better term, any ideas on how else to refer to this ?

Spam links - which link is most damaging to my rankings.
I have just started using Open Site Explorer and discovered a lot of spam links to my website.
Technical SEO | | A.Ronny
(I have mostly ranked on page for many years one but in the last two weeks ranking have dropped to page two)
The links have Anchor Text such as Scam - Dishonest - Drugs. Most of the of the links are "nofollow".
Will links with "nofollow" affect my ranking and if so which of the links should i priorities to remove?
Do I look at Link Equity - Domain Authority - Page Authority or other criteria? Many thanks

Transferring link juice on a page with over 150 links
I'm building a resource section that will probably, hopefully, attract a lot of external links but the problem here is that on the main index page there will be a big number of links (around 150 internal links - 120 links pointing to resource sub-pages and 30 being the site's navigational links), so it will dilute the passed link juice and possibly waste some of it. Those 120 sub-pages will contain about 50-100 external links and 30 internal navigational links. In order to better visualise the matter think of this resource as a collection of hundreds of blogs categorised by domain on the index page (those 120 sub-pages). Those 120 sub-pages will contain 50-100 external links The question here is how to build the primary page (the one with 150 links) so it will pass the most link juice to the site or do you think this is OK and I shouldn't be worried about it (I know there used to be a roughly 100 links per page limit)? Any ideas? Many thanks

Any ideas why this site is being penalized?
http://www.my-french-house.com/ has been online since around 2004 and has nearly always been in the top 10 serps for terms like 'property for sale in france'. However, over the last 12 months we've been hit really hard by Google and have fallen dramatically in rank. Can anyone give any insight into what may have happened? As an aside, we've had no message in the Google Webmaster Console and have not contacted Google about the apparent penalty / penalization. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Cheers Jim

Poor Site Performance
Hello, A couple of months ago, this site was dropped from google due to a noindex, nofollow tag thewealthymind(dot)com It's back up, but performing poorly. Take for example the term "The 4 step belief change" in the home page title tag. This site is the #1 authority on that and yet it ranks 3rd below weaker pages. There's 180 404 errors in GWT, many from past versions of pages of the site but also including thewealthymind(dot)com/index.html and thewealthymind(dot)com/index.htm even though there is a rel=cononical tag on the home page. What's the process of getting this site back to health?

New project old domain should I 301 redirect while new sites built
I just took on a larger scale e-commerce project and came across a tricky road block that I need some advise on. Ok I'm building the site from scratch and due to it's complexity it may take 3-4 months before I have it designed and coded. The client has a domain name that has some decent page/domain authority and I would hate to loose that while the sites being built. Currently I have nothing to display as his previous site got hacked and it was deleted by the previous web admin. Being that a blog has already been approved as part of the project I already installed wordpress to keep the domain fresh however here's the issue, I installed wordpress in a folder called blog and debating if I should 301 redirect or 302 redirect his index here? The blog will always reside in the blog folder even after launch. Will performing a 301 redirect pull all the juice away from my index page? I'm assuming yes. IF so what would occur once the project is complete and I make the ecommerce site live in the index page? Thanks in Advance! Mike
