Does Google or Bing use words in the page title beyond the displayed limit for ranking purposes?
-
Standard good practice for on-page SEO includes keeping page title length below the maximum that Google displays in the SERPs. But words in the title beyond that maximum can be indexed, even if they don't show in the SERPs for end users.
For ranking purposes, is there any value in words beyond the character limit in page titles that are truncated in the SERPs?

Well said. I agree with IPROdigital's comment completely.

IMO search engines' main priority (advertising aside
) is to make an experience good for users. Sure, they will be indexed, but if Google or other SEs consider how it looks to users, it probably won't help. That aside, consider the importance of your Click Through Rate. You make all the effort of getting ranked, then your competitor has the title and description fully and neatly displayed, and you don't - not ideal. I tell clients that sometimes we might well rank lower than competitors but if the title and description are neater and have emotional impact they stand a far better chance of getting the clicks.
I doubt there is any value in the words beyond the character limit - from Google's point of view, why should there be, if users can't see it in SE results? I believe the recommended length is 60 characters.

Rel canonical on other page instead of duplicate page. How Google responds?
Hi all, We have 3 pages for same topics. We decided to use rel canonical and remove old pages from search to avoid duplicate content. Out of these 3 pages....1 and 2 type of pages have more similar content where 3 type don't have. Generally we must use rel canonical between 1 and 2. But I am wondering what happens if I canonical between 1 and 3 while 2 has more similar content? Will Google respects it or penalise as we left the most similar page and used other page for canonical. Thanks

Google creating it own content
I am based in Australia but a US founded search on 'sciatica' shows an awesome answer on the RHS of the SERP https://www.google.com/search?q=sciatica&oq=sciatica&aqs=chrome.0.69i59.3631j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8 The download on sciatica is a pdf created by google. Firstly is this common in the US? secondly any inputs on where this is heading for rollout would be appreciated. Is google now creating its own content to publish?

How I can check if Google and other search engines will properly cache a page (a dynamic one)?
My site is currently disallowing search engine bots with the help of robots.txt. These dynamic pages can be crawled using Screamingfrog since they are linked to a static category page which is also linked to the homepage. Thanks in advance!

Home page rank for keyword
Hi Mozers I have traded from my website balloon.co.uk for over 10 years. For a long while the site ranked first for the word 'balloon' across the UK on google.co.uk (first out of 41 million). Around the time Penguin launched the site began to drop and currently sits on about page 5. What's confusing is that for a search on 'balloons' ('s' on the end of balloon) it ranks 2nd in the location of Birmingham where I'm based. That's 2nd in the real search rather than a map local search. But - if I search 'balloon' from the location of Birmingham my contact page ranks 5th: http://www.balloon.co.uk/contact.htm but the home page ranks nowhere. So - it's gone from ranking 1st nationally to ranking nowhere with my contact page ranking above the home page (which is a generic word domain). Any ideas?

Best Practices for Page Titles | RSS Feeds
Good Morning MOZers, Quick question for the community: when creating an RSS feed for one of your websites, how do you title your RSS feed? Currently, the sites I'm managing use the 'rss.xml' for the file name, but I was curious to know whether or not it would, in any way, benefit my SERP if I were to add my domain to precede the 'rss.xml', i.e. 'my-sites-rss.xml' or something of that nature. Beyond that, are there any 'best practices' for creating RSS feed page titles or is there a preferred method of implementation? Anybody have any solutions

Bing webmaster tools?
The majority of focus these days seems to be on Google. This leaves Bing to fall by the wayside, but I do understand why. Has anyone found any good reference material on Bing and why the amount of pages they index is substantially less than Google? while the sitemaps were submitted to Google and Bing around the same time, my client has ~165,000 / 202,000 pages indexed on Google and ~7,500 / 202,000 on Bing. Can anyone explain what's going on here or has no real research been done into the area?
