Purchasing local domains for SEO
-
Hi,
I'm considering buying domains to help build our SEO traffic. But, I'm looking for some advice on whether or not this can hurt us.
For example, if our site is www.brandname.com and the site is all about online education, would it beneficial for us to purchase a local domain like education.boston.com and optimize with unique content so we can point back to our own site (if "education boston" is a high volume keyword)?
Thanks!

Great, this is super helpful. Thank you both for the information as well as your suggestions.

As Takeshi mentioned, doing this in a sustainable and long-term way is very resource intensive.
I'm generalizing, but I would personally look at building out subpages, whole site sections, and resources on your existing site, rather than new domains. You're much more likely to get links to a subpage or section that has killer resources and information than you are to get them to a new small-ish site. The coverage you're going to get from external efforts, such as writing top-notch articles and getting them placed on respected sites might also be worth exploring as an alternative.
If you can do all of this as well as build out new sites with unique content, then go for it.

Building out a second or third site is a resource intensive task. Not only will you have to generate content & links for your main site, you will also have to create content & links for your secondary site for them to have any value. You are effectively doubling your work.
If you have the resources for it, it can be a good strategy for taking up multiple slots in the search results, as well as creating a source of links that your competitors cannot duplicate. However, be aware of the effort it will take you and weigh the costs & benefits.

Linking root domains to your own site
I have been using the moz open site explorer tool and glancing at my competition. I noticed most sites if not all in the linking domains section have a link to there own site. How do i do this? On my site i have no established links and my score is only 1/1. Even with lower ranking sites that have there own site linking to there self have a 16/16. Any help would be appreciated I am pretty new to all of this. thanks

Domain Authority - quality scoring
Hey All:
Link Building | | Stephan_Boehringer
Got a question about domain authority value. I'm reviewing our link profile and I'm trying to figure out if there are any links to our domain we should disavow. I'm also looking at some of our competitor link profiles to see if we are missing out on any quality websites that could be linking to us. To evaluate this, I'm looking at the domain authoriy of any of the websites in question. Thus, my question is two-fold. At what point in time is Domain authority too low, necessitating us to get rid of the inbound link?2) How high should a DA value be to have us try to build an inbound link from to our website? FYI: our website home page has a page authority of 49 and a domain authority of 43. Thanks for your help Stephan0 -
Forum signature links and SEO
Regarding this article on forum signature links, is this good advice? http://searchtempo.com/forum-signature-links-and-seo/ Doesn't Google suggest a nofollow on these types of forum links? On a related matter, is it a good practice to add a Google Plus link in forum signatures? Best,

What value do external broken links give to a domain?
I ask, as I've just used opensite explorer to look at external links a competitor has, and I've found the high value ones at the top of the list go to a page that no longer exists on their site. Are these stiill of value in the SERP's, or have they messed up by not putting a 301 redirect on them?

SEO Firm recommendations?
I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a quality SEO company that focuses primarily on building links on high quality sites? So many of the SEO firms are too slick with their sales people and content analysis and research and reports & B.S. What I'd like is an honest company who will simply help me acquire high quality links. Any SEO companies out there that can help??? Most SEO companies are also way too expensive. I'm looking for quality @ a value. Can anyone help?

Fresh ideas on SEO budget spending
I have a client who is willing to spend an additional 5k into his SEO campaign. I was curious if anyone has any other ideas on spending this in terms of link building. Human edited directories work really well and i have seen some huge successes. Unfortunately i have gotten stuck in purchasing these and would like some fresh ideas. Content is a no brainier.
