What would you consider an over optimized title tag? [examples included]
-
Say you want to target a single page for 2 terms and they both get a good amount of search volume. At the same time you don't want the title tag to be atrocious, do you just choose one? (maybe the one with most search volume).
I'm going to make up some examples which aren't based on real search volume for the sake of time and completely fake and you be the judge:
custom car parts - exact sv: 4000
personalized car parts - exact sv: 5000
wholesale custom car parts - exact sv: 4400Title tag A: Custom Car Parts - Personalized Wholesale Car Parts | Company Name
OR
Title Tag B: Custom Car Parts | Company Name
Or
You recommend.
Do you get where i am going here? Some of the pages on my website target 3-4 terms that mean exactly or pretty close to the same thing.
-
Hi Paul,
My personal opinion is that adding the company name is a redundant (to the url) waste of space. Possible caveat, if the company name is short and does something for CTR.
Generally no though.
-
I like this point, i do it in my meta description tag already... Would you end with the company name?.... | Company Name
-
Hi Paul,
I'd add detail to a distinct term, as opposed to more stand-alone terms.
Random example:
"Custom Car Parts For GM, Ford, Chrysler & Most Foreign Brands"
Which would be better than 3 terms all meaning "custom car parts" in the title tag.
Consider also that a keyword stuffed title tag is inherently going to have a lower CTR, which will hurt you in the end.
Good luck!
-
I agree on finding one more similar term, instead of using the same one twice. Great point!

I agree with TommyTan

Create separate landing pages since all keyword phrases have "car parts" in them and you don't want to repeat that twice in the the tag.
Use secondary keywords such as "auto part store" after the main keyword in the title tag.
Might not need to include the company name, you should rank for that automatically if it's your domain name.
-
Hi Paul,
I would prefer Sample A: Custom Car Parts - Personalized Wholesale Car Parts | Company Name over the other one. However, if possible, instead of using car parts twice, is there any term for it in that industry?
To answer the question in your title, what do I consider as over-optimized title tag then it would be a title tag with tons of keywords. For example, Traing a Dog | Dog Food | Dog Toy | Dog Apparel and etc. Something like that I would consider over-optimize or irrelevant. Doesn't tell Google or visitor what the page is exactly about.

Yoast seo title question
I was referred to this plugin and have found it to be the most irritating and poorly designed plugin in the world. I want to be able to set my titles without it changing my page headers as well. For instance - If I set my title to be "This is my article name | site name" it will make my H1 tag read the same. I do not want or desire this nonsense. Why would they think this is something wise? Why would I want my site name on every single H1 tag on my site? How can I fix this? I only want my title to be my title. I want my H1 tag to remain the post/page name that I define in wordpress.

Optimized Page Not Ranking for Head Term
We have a primary donation page that we've tried to position well for the term 'Donate' and some of its longer-tailed derivatives. The page has plenty of high-quality backlinks and internal links, and hasn't had any manual actions taken against it. The backlink profile is fairly good from what I can tell, definitely not mainly spam. The issue is that it doesn't rank for 'Donate', at all really. For 'Donate Online' and 'Donate Canada', it ranks roughly #3-4 across major Canadian cities, but we're not even in the top 100 for 'Donate'. There are pages and domains that are way less optimized, with much weaker backlink profiles, that are ranking well ahead of us. It's not a noindex or robots problem, as the page ranks fine for many other terms. We also have a strong domain with around 660k backlinks according to MajesticSEO. Here's the URL in question: http://www.redcross.ca/donate I'm hoping someone can help us diagnose what could be going wrong with this term specifically and how we can get this page into the SERPs where it belongs. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks in advance!

Easy way to change wordpress category titles. Currently categories are appearing with the same title?!
I'm working on a wordpress adult dating review site and have started to set up categories for each of my main keywords. I have also started to add sub categories by county and town and so far have done so for the counties of 'Lincolnshire' and 'Derbyshire'. The problem is though that for each of my subcategories the page titles are appearing the same. For example: www.mysite.com/category/online-dating/lincolnshire/spalding (root category online dating) shows the title as 'Spalding'. www.mysite.com/category/adult-dating/lincolnshire/spalding also has the title 'Spalding' even though it's root category is different (adult dating). It's probably easier to go to http://www.top-10-dating-reviews.com to see how it's set up. If you click in the category text in the top menu and navigate to dating/derbyshire/alfreton for example and then adult dating/derbyshire/alfreton you'll notice the page titles are the same. I use all in one SEO pack and have rewrite titles checked with category titles set to %category_title% | %blog_title%. I also use category SEO updater. In order to prevent duplicate content issues how can I simply make the title of each category category root title/category subtitle(county)/category subtitle 2(town). The title of each category page would then read for example Online Dating Lincolnshire Spalding.

Wordpress Titles
My question is about long url titles, my client is using wordpress and the rankings are going well apart from two, which for some reason just wont move. After using some of the tools available on SEO moz which i have found very helpful I have spotted a re-occuring warning throughout the site, the titles, in word press you have this setting (below) page title : %page_title% | %blog_title% My question is my client has quite good brand online but I done want to impact this. The problem I have is that I have a Keyword in the title then the clients company name which is three words and takes up a lot of space. I am thinking about removing this but in two minds so i was kinda hoping for a bit of advice as this looks like a standard in wordpress. Mike
