Travel agents are creating Google Place pages for our properties - is this a bad thing?

I'm currently trying to develop a clear understanding and policy for my company on how we deal with Google place pages, specifically where we stand on places pages being created by our agents.
We run a business in the travel industry with a number of locations around the world. Our services are sold via travel agents. Naturally, we set up places pages for each of our locations but recently we've noticed agents setting up places pages for these locations with different titles & their own contact details (same address though). In one case we've received verification postcards which we've been asked to pass on.
The pages are set up in 'good faith' to promote business in the agents respective countries and languages but i'm concerned that we are ending up with multiple pages for the same location, hurting our brand, losing our own pages through being buried and ending up with our account being suspended at some point down the line.
There are a number of terms on Google guideline page, in particular, this one:
"Do not create more than one listing for each business location, either in a single account or multiple accounts."
I contacted my Adwords account manager but didn't get a very clear response on this.
What i'm looking for is some 3rd party, definitive advice/opinions on this scenario. Should we be asking agents not to create place pages? Why should they list.. could it end up hurting both of us? Are there pros and cons to this or is it a clear cut case?

Thanks for this! Apologies, i'm being a little cautious about saying too much about the industry as this is a delicate situation at the moment! Essentially a travel agent and hotel chain might be a close comparison where the travel agents are creating places pages claiming the hotels more or less as their own. As you say, merging pages might become a real problem. I guess managing pages for each agent is a huge amount of work but would be the only real way of keeping any sort of control - it would still leave us with the issue of merging and in any case, i don't think our agents would actually subscribe to this.
Anyway, many thanks for your help, it's given me a lot more to think about for sure, especially your interpretation of that particular guideline.

Not understanding exactly what the service is that your company and its agents provide, I'll use an example from another industry: the real estate industry. You will know from my example whether what I'm describing applies to your business model.
Let's start with Google's Places Guidelines. The language in the guidelines applicable to the real estate agency (and I'm hoping your own business) is this:
Businesses with multiple specializations, such as law firms and doctors, should not create multiple listings to cover all of their specialties. You may create one listing per practitioner, and one listing for the office.
(emphasis mine)
So, a real estate office with 10 realtors working with in can have 1 listing for the business itself, and one for each agent.
These are the official guidelines.
That being said, due to weaknesses and bugs in Google Places, there has been a historic problem with multiple listings sharing the same address but having different data in areas like the business title, phone number field, etc. Merging of the listings can happen so that you might end up with the main listing having the phone number for Agent #6 instead of the direct office number. Reviews for Agent #3 may end up on Agent #4's Place Page. And, yes, you might encounter your main office being outranked by the individual agents' listings.
Your task is to develop a company policy regarding how to handle this, knowing that merging is indeed a real danger, but that the benefits of each agent having his/her own Place Page can also mean increased overall visibility for your whole business. You need to determine whether you will allow agents to have their own Place Pages and whether these will be controlled by you (within your own Places account) or whether every agent will be given the keys to create their own listing under their own steam). Both routes have potential benefits and pitfalls. For example, if you control the listings, you control their data and will also be able to realize if anything becomes penalized or problematic. On the other hand, managing a large number of listings (especially for an International business) is a very big job, indeed. Do you have the time to do this, or would it be better to make it company policy that each agent control his own listing?
I can't make the decision for you, but these are the issues you need to consider in coming to a final decision as to how you want to handle this complex scenario.

Thanks for the input Dejan! My issue though is that we already have an official (or canonical - at least we'd hope it is) place page set up for each of our locations using one account. Our agents are setting duplicate pages up in different languages. Potentially, there could be 20 plus pages with different descriptions but all for the same location/business. This would only happen of course if we passed the postcards on to them. In some cases, though, the page was validated through a different phone number, so we have no control in this case.

I always go for centralised option and manage all listings via one account, usually set up in batch if it's hundreds of locations. Having it all in one place provides a single point of control and performance monitoring. Alternative would be to provide guidelines for your agents on how to set up quality listings that maximise their presence through content and completeness.

LinkedIn Versus Google Adwords for B to B Advertising
Does anyone have experience with LinkedIn and Google Adwords for B+B advertising? I own a commercial real estate agency in Manhattan. We aim to generate qualified leads of business tenants seeking to rent office or loft space. The advertising is not meant to build an image or branding. Approximate total adverting budget is $3,000-$5,000/month. LinkedIn appears to have the advantage in being able to target a particular demographic (industry, geography, job function, size of company). But I wonder if it is not geared towards branding rather than generating warm leads. In terms of cost and quality of leads does anyone have insight as to how these two platforms compare? Different meta tags appearing in SERP for same landing page
Hi all, hoping someone can help. We have a landing page that ranks quite well for a number of keywords that send us a nice amount of organic traffic. We understand the importance of Meta tags, as Google will be the users first interaction with our site we want to stand out and be noticed and also show we provide information on their search query. The problem is this, while we have optimised the title and description tags for the landing page, this is only appearing on specific search results. If you were to search a different keyword, you would still get the same landing page, but the title tag and description would not pull through, it decides to pull through the page name and first few lines of text instead. Is there anything we can do to sort this issue?

Enigma of Google & China - Can you solve it?
In March, my team in Shanghai launched a site redesign of our English language website (targeted at expats in China) which: Changed the URL's to be more SEO friendly (keyword based, shorter, etc) Implemented endless scrolling to replace previous pagination Changed some front end layouts Changed page title and meta description tags to use keywords, be unique, use correct lengths Since then, we see in Google Analytics, traffic form Google organic branded search terms has been steadily dropping (between 5 - 20% depending on the term). Not provided is down 2%. We do not rank for many non-branded terms, so have no statistical significance there. However in Google Webmaster Tools, impressions of branded queries are also down, along with non-branded search terms (including those we tried to optimise for). We see similar traffic drops from other search engines as well (Bing, Baidu) but not at as high a level (only 3% or so). We have not changed any other marketing strategy online or offline. We have tested / done: 1. Changing title tags 2. Reverting to old pagination (as we say in GWT a drop in indexed pages) 3. Checked the tracking code is working 4. Checked our rankings (we still rank position 1 for our branded queries and even some non branded) 5. Submitted new XML site map The only large issue we could find is that from that day there were over 300,000 page not found 404 errors (which we are now redirecting by 301s as Google shows them to us, and have been doing so for 2 weeks). Nothing is helping us so far, organic traffic continues to drop week on week, so I am reaching out to the Moz community. Can anybody think of a reason for such a dramatic drop? Please help!

Rep Management with Google+ > Help Needed
My client, Pareto Law, have set themselves up with a Google Local Business listing:

https://plus.google.com/+paretolaw, and when searching for the Pareto Law brand this page appears a bit like a site-link under the main search result. I've noticed that other companies, such as moz.com, have their G+ page ranking seperately on page 1 of the SERPs. This is especially important for my client, as we're trying to push down other sites rankings for our brand. In an ideal world I'd want only their twitter, G+, linkedin, & facebook pages ranking amongst wikipedia entries and the like, as opposed to forums discussing my client. The question is, are Pareto Law able to set themselves up with a G+ business page as well as the G+ local listing page they presently have. Is that an acceptable setup, or are you supposed to have just one or the other? I'm struggling to differentiate between the 2.0 -
Why has Google started to re-write my page titles?
Since earlier this week I've noticed that Google has started to re-write several of our page titles and I'm not entirely sure why - does anyone have any info? We are a UK business and currently have top spot for the keyword 'toilet cubicles' - however, our index.html page title has changed as follows: FROM: Toilet Cubicles | WC Panel Systems for Washrooms | Cubicle Centre TO: Cubicle Centre: Toilet Cubicles | WC Panel Systems for Washrooms Is this Google favouring a more brand-led approach to search? How to feature in Google restaurant reviews?
Hi, When I Google a restaurant name here in the UK - try "fat duck bray" I see the photo of the restaurant on the right hand side, the Zagat review score and then right at the bottom of this section there is "More Reviews" with links to Urbanspoon,com, qype.co.uk, Zagat.com and Blackbookmag.com (often TripAdvisor will appear here too.) To one of the sites I work with these are all the competition so the natural question is how would one appear here? I've never seen anything covering this before so interested if anyone else has read anything on this or has any experience on this. Thanks in advance for any answers.

Splitting our main website in Two... What is the fastest way for the new sites to become a brand in Googles eyes.
In a couple weeks our main website (which generates all of the revenue) will be split into two because of a long term branding / identity crisis. So my question is, how can i make sure (besides obvious 301 redirects) that these 2 new fresh urls become a brand as quick as possible in googles eyes? So far i am thinking of things like: press releases, blog posts with brand mentions. I am not ignorant and expect this to happen overnight, but we need a strong foundation to build on, which is why i am asking Anyone got a list / case study / advise so I can really blow it up on launch week?
