Organic Brand Traffic Tanking
-
Hey Guys,
We recently launched a new website in late February. Since then, we have seen a drop in organic traffic from most of our top organic keywords. My major concern is the drop that we've seen from our branded keywords. Since the new site launch, our #1 organic traffic and revenue-driving keyword (brand name) dropped over 31%! It should be noted that all of our URLs changed, however, I've updated the sitemap in GWT and we have utilized 301 redirects on all old URLs. Any insights or recommendations on where I should be looking or what I should be doing?
Thanks!

Good to hear Distilled on this one Thanks Mike!

301s will preserve the referral data, so it should not be the case that it's being stripped out.
-
I'm pretty sure that if it's a 301 permanent server-side redirect, than it will be seen in analytics as direct traffic. However in the past I've seen a lot of talk about Google seeing the original source of traffic in the first place with the 301 being hidden, but I've had experiences like your talking about and I do believe it's direct. Would love to hear some other SEO brains on this lol.

Update
Hey guys. I have noticed that there was a sharp increase in direct traffic that coincided with the sharp decrease in organic traffic. Could the 301s somehow be stripping the referrer URL making search traffic look like direct (seems far fetched, but wanted to throw it out there)? Any experience with this?

Yes I saw the same thing. I than took the site and implemented a similar search like the old site so that I could get the pages back and internal linking the site had back in place. This seemed to help my traffic and rankings move back into place.
-
Thanks Brandon! Like you, our old site had indexable internal search pages, which we have excluded from being indexed on the new site - which could be having an impact. I've looked at GA to compare new URLs with the old ones, but unfortunately I am seeing drop offs across ALL pages
-
Thanks Andy, what you said makes sense. It's just alarming when we are so used to having a certain traffic/revenue level and it just drops off the face of the earth. I'm sure there is some kind of period in which Google does not know whether or not to trust the new website, so I'm keeping a close eye on it. Unfortunately, I don't deal with new websites frequently, so I don't have much to go off of.
-
I would also dig into your analytics under content. Start comparing pages viewed so you can start pin-pointing what pages are dropping out of the SERPs in-case you missed any in your 301s. I recently had a situation where I did everything right but the site I was working on had an internal search that was indexable so after looking through my analytics I was able to find out where my drop in traffic was really coming from.
Like Andy said, it's still a bit soon, so give it some time and continually check up on it.
-
can you provide us with a url, it would be useful in this case.
Something to note would be what I consider as the "bedding down" period of a new site, whether 100% new or just a website refresh or a wholesale a website was here and now here is a different one. It refers to the 1 or 2 months following go live (it is similar tto the sandbox theory) where Google doesn't totally know whether to trust a site or not and nor has it indexed every new url yet.
You've done all the right things, you just need to wait and check next month - results won't be instant with this kind of thing ... remember SEO is a Journey and Not a Destination.

Spike then Drop in Direct Traffic?
We've been doing some SEO work over the last few weeks and earlier this week we saw a large spike in traffic. Yay we all thought, but then yesterday the traffic levels returned to pre-celebratory levels. I've been doing some digging to try and find out what was different Monday and Tuesday this week. Mondays are usually big traffic days for us anyway, but this week was by far the biggest, and Tuesday was even higher still, our best day ever. After some poking, I found that the direct traffic followed the same pattern as our overall traffic levels (image attached). The first spike coincides with an email we sent out that day, but the later spike we just don't know where it came from? I understand loosely that direct isn't easily traceable, but can anyone help us understand more about this second spike? Thanks! ayqL2wi

Google Mobile algo traffic issue?
Hello, I have just been approach by a website owner - site isn't mobile friendly in any way - and they've seen a significant fall off in traffic since 23 Jan... backlink profile is clean (and no linkbuilding undertaken) - nothing else has changed... - more than half their traffic is via mobile devices and they've lost a good 1/3 of their traffic - and drilling deeper it's their organic traffic that's been hit. Anybody else seeing similar? edit... for reference: https://www.davidnaylor.co.uk/google-released-mobile-algorithm-think.html

Wordpress to HubSpot CMS - I had major crawl issues post launch and now traffic is down 400%
Hi there good looking person! Our traffic went from 12k visitors in july to 3k visitors in july. << www.thedsmgroup.com >>When we moved our site from wordpress to the hubspot COS (their CMS system), I didnt submit a new sitemap to google webmaster tools. I didn't know that I had to... and to be honest, I've never submitted or re-submitted a sitemap to GWT. I have always built clean sites with fresh content and good internal linking and never worried about it. Yoast kind of took care of the rest, as all of my sites and our clients' sites were always on wordpress. Well, lesson learned. I got this message on June 27th in GWT_http://www.thedsmgroup.com/: Increase in not found errors__Google detected a significant increase in the number of URLs that return a 404 (Page Not Found) error. Investigating these errors and fixing them where appropriate ensures that Google can successfully crawl your site's pages._One month after our site launched we had 1,000 404s on our website. Ouch. Google thought we had a 1,200 page website with only 200 good pages and 1,000 error pages. Not very trust worthy... We never had a 404 ever before this, as we added a plugin to wordpress that would 301 any 404 to the homepage, so we never had a broken link on our site, which is not ideal for UX, but as far as google was concerned, our site was always clean. Obviously I have submitted a new sitemap to GWT a few weeks ago, and we are moving in the right direction... **but have I taken care of everything I need to? I'm not sure. Our traffic is still around 100 visitors per day, not 400 per day as it was before we launched the new site.**Thoughts?I'm not totally freaking out or anything, but a month ago we ranked #1 and #2 for "marketing agency nj", now we aren't in the top 100. I've never had a problem like this. _I added a few screen grabs from Google Webmaster Tools that should be helpful.__Bottom line, have I done everything I need to or do I need to do something with all of these "not found" error details that I have in GWT?_None of these "not found" pages have any value and I'm not sure how Google even found them... Do Local Search Efforts (Citations, NAP, Reviews) have an impact on traditional organic search listings (without the A, B, C mapping icons), but rather the traditional listings?
Are citations, NAP, Reviews, and other local search efforts impact traditional SEO listings? Can one elaborate?

My OSE stats have never been better but my rankings are tanking
For some reason my traffic to [Antique Banknotes] has declined drastically over the past month even while my OSE metrics have gone up. A typical example is this 1892 five dollar bill. I used to rank first for this search but now I am 3rd. Worse, a search for ten dollar bill used to have me near the top which brought a lot of traffic. Now I am way out in the weeds. Can anyone help me understand what is causing me to drop so much? I know there is a new competitor who outranks me with the url [Antique money] he is likely the cause of my fall in the ratings. I don't know why but OSE loves his site even though I seem to beat him in most areas OSE measures. His Page authority for instance is 45 while mine is 37 but I have higher scores in every category. I don't understand that. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Schema.org for Organization Logos
Hi, We have 4 different sites on four different domains. each domain serves a different market and sells different products. However, all 4 sites have the same logo. we are thinking of implementing the logo schema.org for our logo - http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.ca/2013/05/using-schemaorg-markup-for-organization.html Does any one know if Google might see the identical logos (even if Google cant actually see an Image like a human) for different domains as something spammy? Many thanks

30-40% drops in organic Google traffic starting early/mid Feb to Now??
Hello All: I would really appreciate any insight that can be provided into this dilemma. I've ruled out bad links issues - we don't have them and never engaged in grey to black hat SEO linkbuilding. I cannot find the cause for this drop off. Maybe I'm missing something because I am so close to it? The site is markspace Thanks in advance for any and all help or insight!! 🙂

When you provide traffic estimates, do you factor in CTR?
There are several studies that show CTR based on position. When a client asks for traffic estimates do you multiply CTR by estimated search volume? Why or why not?
