Have My SEO Cake & Eat It - Mix Viral Content & Business Content?
-
Hello,
I optimize for a fashion, eCommerce site which has catalogue pages and product pages.
We're currently working on a large "blog" which tons of great content designed to attract readers, links and tons of long tail traffic.
We'll be doing how-to videos, celeb interviews, top-tens, etc. etc. We'll even have a UGC community section eventually. Really great.
Now, I want to use the links generated by this section to rank for generics like this:
For example: I want to rank for "Lingerie" and I have this page set up as the target:
http://www.zando.co.za/women/clothing/lingerie/
I create some amazing content that generates lots of links containing the word "lingerie" .
That awesome content lives in:(hypothetical URL:)
http://www.zando.co.za/fashion/magazine/how-lingerie-has-changed-over-50-years/
I want to (and this is where you come in get people linking to my catalogue page (http://www.zando.co.za/women/clothing/lingerie/) where they can find a banner or something alluding to that piece of link bait (the /fashion/magazine/ url).
Perhaps similar to the Wordpress style <read more="">page break on posts?</read>
Reason is, I want my "Money-Page" to get the links with "Lingerie" in it.
Problem is, it'll be another click to the thing they want to find. Also, say I decide a few months later that I want to do another piece, like "lingerie in films" and do the same.
My 'banner' idea would get very crowded or, it would mean that I bump the 50-years piece, which then makes for bad UX for readers clicking through looking for the old piece.
Or perhaps this can all be solved with good design?
Here's a WBF talking about mixing content:
http://www.seomoz.org/blog/mixing-viral-content-with-business-content-whiteboard-friday
Does anyone have an example of someone doing this well?
PS. Was also thinking that on my "archive'' url, in between the content, I'll query for the top products that, that piece speaks to and make it possible for people to add to cart as they're reading the link bait content that is relevant to the product.
Cheers
Paul.

Hi Takeshi,
Yes, that's actually pretty good, since the hashed link will mean that everything can stay on one URL and I can retain the link juice.
Also, I'm thinking, if that hashed link can be 'caught' by some sort of jQuery code that will present that specific piece of link bait content in a dynamic block, that would be great.
Because then, what you could do is, when you have another link bait campaign with different content, you can get the code to display the content that is relevant to the click. So, if I'm clicking from Bob's Blog on a 'Lingerie in Films' link that has www.{....}.php#lingerie-films hash link, that function catches it and presents that piece of bait content first thing in the page.
Any thoughts guys? Any other solutions perhaps? I do think this one has potential.

One thing I've done before is putting the linkable content in a tab within the product page. Then set it so that you can directly access the content via a hashtag:
http://www.become.com/munro-shoes#guides
If you take away the the "#guides" in the example above, it will show you the product listing, and if you click on the tab in the upper right, it will show the content again. Since Google ignores hashtags for linking purposes, you can get people to link to the hashtagged content and still pass link juice to your main page.
That's a pretty big hack, though. The much easier solution is to just let the viral content be its own separate page, and just add a link from the viral content to your product page. The link will pass most of the link value that the viral pages acquires.

Better Graphic Design-Impact on SEO?
Will improving our site's graphic design but keeping identical structure, tags and text result in better Google? Are lower bounce rates greater time spent on a site by visitors rewarded by Google n the form of higher ranking? We are a commercial real estate brokerage firm in Manhattan and plan on making the following changes: -Much larger photos for listings

-Lighter cleaner design with more open white areas
-Use of more visible fonts
-Better forms
-Potentially less text and more emphasis on product, which in our case are real estate listints. Our existing site: w w w . m e t r o - m a n h a t t a n . com is a bit ordinary and uninviting. The redesign will have a concept similar to
http://www.dernieretage-paris.com/
The theme behind this real estate site is the city itself, which is quite clever and applicable to Manhattan. Our home page as well as other URLs use lots of text. If we reduce text and use more images to make the pages more engaging, will our organic ranking decline? If we reduce text can we compensate by fuller completion of meta tags? Any thoughts???0 -

For business to business email, should we avoid sending on Mondays and Fridays? The nature of the service is commercial real estate brokerage for office space in New York City. We are mailing to corporate decision makers in various industries (technology, finance, law). Should we avoid mailing during certain times of day? Or is there a best time of day to send the email. Thanks,

Server-Side A/B Testing - Okay for SEO?
Hey Moz Community! I've been digging into the differences between server-side testing and client-side testing and had a generic question. Is it safe to run server-side A/B testing? For example, if I want to Split Test the home page of a site and show 50% of my traffic one home page, and show 50% of my traffic a completely different (read: new template, new content, new CTAs, etc) home page, are there any implications to SEO and organic search? I've spent about five hour researching and from what I can find A/B testing is acceptable as long as you don't show Googlebot different content or run A/B tests on Googlebot. Matt Cutts, head of Webspam at Google, has stated that A/B testing does not impact search rankings. "A/B or split testing or other forms of testing web sites is okay by Google as long as you don't test GoogleBot or don't treat GoogleBot differently." The biggest concerns for SEO cloaking, so from my understanding, for server-side testing, you'd need to do user-agent based redirection so that Googlebot (or any search bot) gets the normal version of the home page. The bots shouldn't be part of the test. Technically that is cloaking, but intention-wise, we're not trying to be sneaky. I've also read through this article about experimentation from Google developers here. Am I missing anything here or is there a definitive answer? If we serve a “B” as a different site for user testing, just exclude google bot by user-agent and we’re good? THANKS!

Browser-based redirect vs. dynamic content
Hey everyone, We have a free browser extension for Chrome and a paid web product for all other browsers. Given the differences in product and pricing (free vs. paid) I'd like visitors to see a different landing page based on their browser. Visitors using Chrome should see a landing page with content about the free browser extension, while visitors from every other browser should see a landing page with content about the paid, premium web product. I'm trying to decide between these two options: a) 302 redirect visitors from one static HTML landing page to another if their user agent suggests they're using Chrome b) Use javascript to make parts of the landing page dynamic and show a different CTA and different copy for visits from Chrome Does anyone have any experience with having to make this choice? What are some things I should take into consideration for optimal "crawlability" and page-load-speed? Thanks in advance!

What should a small company with a difficult SEO/SEM challenge do?
Everyone here knows that SEM and SEO "experts" are everywhere. But our company has a particular challenge - our Volusion-hosted e-store's product offering is so wide that it's a huge challenge to make a dent in our search engine placement. In our earliest days, one SEM "pioneer" company issued us a refund after realizing they couldn't do anything to affect our placement. The problem is that the revenue from any one particular keyword term doesn't return enough sales to make the effort worthwhile - sales are scattered allover the product spectrum. Does anyone have any experience with this particular challenge? What would be considered a realistic monthly budget - given that the business itself is quite small? I don't know what the etiquette on Moz is but YES I am looking to engage a company to help us out.

Why has my bounce rate gone in to orbit since moving the same content to a new site?!
I moved our site to a wordpress theme over the christmas break. All content is pretty much the same word for word, and I think the new site looks much, much better than the old one. Why then, has our overall bounce rate gone from 7-8%, up to 74%? Bounce rates for some KW focused internal pages have gone from 2-3% to similar 70+% in some cases. Just to confuse things further, I have also changed the name and branding for the site to differentiate us from a competitor and stop the confusion we've experienced at times. But, I can't see how the new logo would cause and extra 65% of visitors to leave straight off! I really don't want to go back to the old name and don't think that's the answer anyhow, but I may have to test it out of sheer desperation. There's only a static holding page for the old site now as a reference point for people searching the old name (not many). So I've attached a screenshot of how it looked below. Also at http://imgur.com/aM5o9. The new site is at flatroofs.co.uk. I have just noticed that by placing the previous 'more information' links a secondary menu in the left widget area rather than on the page, they are less noticeable especially if you scroll down to the bottom of a page, where the only links are in the footer? Again though, if 75% of people are put off this easily something else must be at play! Any advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Danny. aM5o9.png?1

Monthly subscription going viral
Hello everyone, thank you in advance for your suggestions. I have a new product rolling out that will require a monthly fee from my customers. In return, they get a daily email/video on a particular topic. I want this to go viral, meaning, I would like a program where it's easy for the customer to buy into, easy for them to promote with incentives and as hands off as possible for me to manage. Are their any good tools out there that have already been developed? Any ideas about the best way to make this grow?
