On Page Optimization
-
Hey its question time for me today.....lol,
I an using the SEOmoz On Page Optimization Tool and so far I have optimized my home page for one term"web design edinburgh" started at an F now its an A (Good Boy!)
So I wasn wondering what poeples views were on the best way to do this? What I was thinking about doing was optimizing my site for 1 main Keyword/ Phrase per page.
For instance Home Page - Keyphrase - "web design edinburgh"
Web Design Page - "Web Development" not sure to make it" web development" or "web development edinburgh"
SEO page - "Search Engine Optimisation" and so on........
So I would end up with a potential of say 6 landing pages each optimised for a certain keyword/phrase!
Is this a good idea, or is there a better method I could employ?
Thanks for sharing again.
Kind Regards,
Craig

Hi Craig,
You should also do some research on the keywords that you are trying to rank for. For example, you are going to try to rank for the keyword "web development" this is going to be pretty tough since it is a super competitive keyword where a lot of websites have a very high domain and page authority already. You might want to try to check out a keyword that is a little more targeted, you will have a much better chance at ranking well and your CTR will be much higher!
But yes you have the right idea. Target a certain keyword for each page, maybe a second if it makes sense and go from there.

Craig,
From what I hear, each page should have 1 goal. So if you optimize each page for those one or two key terms then you should be good.
I would definitely include a "location" term within your keywords. Try different ways to mix it up...
"Web design Edinburgh" - "Edinburh Web designer" - "Web design in Edinburgh"
The difficulty comes when writing out your page copy without repeating yourself or saying "Web design Edinburgh" without it looking spammy.
Best of luck,
Cy

Hi Craig,
I would definitely recommend this method.
It is much better to have a wide spread of keywords within your website, because if two pages use the same keyword then they will be competing with one another for ranking, and this is not what you want.
Optimise the titles and the content around one or two major keywords; for example, 'Web Development Edinburgh' (it doesn't hurt to add Edinburgh here as you will also be optimising for Web Development as a short tail keyword anyway.
Hope this helps.
Matt.

How is it possible to rank first for a keyword, when the keyword isn't written on the page?
I noticed that one of our competitors is ranking in first position for a keyword but when looking on the page grader. The exact keyword is not used on the page at all (or in title, URL etc.). How is this possible, when other sites have content with those exact words?

General Advice or Strategies on optimizing Non-Plural and Plural
Moz, I was just looking for any insights, advice, personal experiences in optimization for keywords that have Non Plural and Plural variants, Basically from my keyword and traffic research i have gathered the majority of the search traffic i am looking to gain is coming through the singular spelling of the keyword i am currently optimizing and updating our page for, From experience with this we have always ranked for the general non plural quantity page and brought traffic from both, My Example : Our lollipops page which has meta information targeted towards 'Lollipops' rather than the singular 'Lollipop' but links to Singular information pages that are targeting the singular word 'Lollipop' This way seemed to make sense as it wouldn't be good for user experience to have titles and headers on a page listing multiple products as a single instance, the content of the page would mostly reflect this targeting also, To make things worse the page language and content is in German where their seems to be many ways of saying the same word from my understanding, Am i doing the right thing in not sacrificing my user experience to target the singular version of the word ? Just some advice please? Apologies i struggled to get my question across well, Thanks James

On Page OPtimisation Query
6 weeks ago, we attempted to improve the on page optimisation for the following keyword 'wedding venues ''edited''' on the following page: ''edited'' I just checked when the page was last crawled by google by checking the cache date in the SERPs which is the 27th of May 201?. We have been tracking the keyword 'wedding venues ''edited''' with the moz keyword ranking tool for the last little while and we've seen no real improvement, in fact we've dropped back a bit in the SERPs to 53rd (Moz says 'Not in top 50', it was 53rd when i last manually checked). I understand that we have to be building links to our site, but i still hoped we would be doing better than this for this keyword with the work we've done does anyone have any advice on how we can improve? Have we over optimised? We would really appreciate any help!

Should I 'nofollow' the pages on my site I want to rank the highest??
I have a lot of pages on my site & I was wondering if I would be better off tagging the pages that are most important to me nofollow. Any suggestions would be wonderful. Thanks

Press Release Title Optimization
I'm getting ready to distribute a press release on PRWeb and had a question regarding the proper way to optimize the headline. Should I use our targeted keywords or our brand in the headline? We don't have a really strong brand, we are not a very well know company throughout the business world. The choices would read like this: "Maker of Blue Widgets Receives Pretigous [big company name] Award" or "[Brand Name] Receives Prestigious [big company name] Award" Any thoughts? Thanks -Brandon

Keyword analysis/optimization for blog sites (avoiding self cannibalization)
Hi there, I work on a site that has regular blog and article posts (or at least, we're shooting for regular), and I'm trying to work on a fluid approach for keyword analysis and optimization. I am wondering...is it best to research new keywords for each new post? I am unsure of what the effect is of optimizing multiple pages for the same keyword. I've been using the SEOmoz report card tool to grade my on page optimization, and I noticed one of the criteria was to avoid self cannibalization. Will I be competing against myself if I optimize multiple pages for the same keyword? I'm worried about what will happen in a month or two when I run out of common keywords and have to start optimizing our latest posts around really obscure keywords. Am I thinking about this the right way? Thanks!

My site fell off the serps for two keywords I tried to optimize the home page for
I was doing some keyword research about 45 days ago and stumbled across two keywords that I was ranking in the mid hundreds and decided I wanted to see if I could rank them. I went in and changed my title to my blog, and the description. Then about a week later I changed my mind and wanted to go for two other keywords so I changed it again. Then within a day or two, my site completely fell off the serps for those two key words that I changed the title to optimize for. None of my other rankings were effected for any of the other keywords, in fact most of my keywords have risen because of recent backlinking. I thought it was just a temporary google bounce because I was playing with my title of my blog or something, but after almost two months I am still nowhere to be found for words that I should easily at least be in the top 1000, especially because I was at about 150 by accident. Anyone have any ideas on what might have happened? Thanks.

Page Title Optimisation
We have a fairly large client for which I look after the analytics, and just recently the SEO also. This celebrity client already recieves near a million visitors per month, 96% of the time for her name. I'm using Googles keyword tool and search trends for insights as to what people are searching for As I get further and further into optimising different pages, I'm running out of ideas for Unique page titles to drive additinal traffic as they have all been covered. {high volume exact searches that is} I'm not sure if I'm over using her name also: for example most of the clients pages start with: "First name last name Keyphrase" should I be using her first name last name on every title? Thanks in advance for what seems like a simple task, however when your up against it for the first time, it's a "Do I Don't I situation!" Kind Regards Sean
