Usual time to index and rank a new site
-
Hi Just wondering if anyone knew how long it usually takes for a brand new site to get indexed and ranked? I launched a new site about 5 weeks ago. So far I have had 96,000 pages indexed but the majority haven't ranked particularly well or appeared. The ones that have ranked aren't ranking high even though they have better content than competitors sites... And my old domain. Do I just need to hang tight and wait till my domain authority improves? Is there anything I can do to speed up this process? cheers

Ah patience, can't help you with that one!
It may take a while for your links to appear in Open Site Explorer. There can be a lag of 1month+ due to the crawl/update cycle. You can find details of the next update here:
https://seomoz.zendesk.com/entries/345964-linkscape-update-schedule
You might be able to find fresher link using an alternative such as MajesticSEO or even google webmaster tools.
I believe the best way to ensure that the mozscape index finds your site is to make sure you've got some links from sites already in the index with high domain authorities.
Also, keep an eye on your google analytics and see where you might be getting referral traffic. If you know a site is passing good qualified visitors who convert then I'd see how you can develop the relationship with that site. (Also, find out why they're linking to you and see what other similar opportunities are out there.)
Completely get the issues regarding the specific part numbers etc. I'm guessing you can't count on repeat business either?
How much do you know about who your customers are? Apart from their very specific needs (finding a particular replacement part) can you target any content toward their more general needs/goals?
Where do these people go for advice? Are there particular user groups/forums or other online/offline communities that you could target?
Have you had any thoughts about how you can position yourself as the go-to place for these type of parts? What makes you different to the competition?

Hi Doug
Thanks for the response and advice. I have started building back links to key pages but these are not showing up in open site explorer yet. I guess that takes time as well.
Old site has no content at all and is under a different brand name. It also got a bit of a panda smack down. The new site has a lot of useful content, product descriptions, manuals etc so should do OK. I kept the old one going whilst the new one got established.
Most of my keywords (170,000 of them) are part numbers of obsolete parts - there is not that much room for creativity.
I think you need to be patient in SEO and I am not.
Thanks again Doug

Hi David, remember it's not just about the relevance of your content, but about it's popularity too. The one thing you'll be missing on a new site is backlinks. By identifying your key pages and building good relevant backlinks to them (or even better creating content that get's others to create the links themselves!) you'll increase the page authority of these pages and your overall domain authority.
You mention an old site. Is the new site a replacement? Can you set up redirects from the old site to the new so you can pass link equity onto the new property (and link customers to relevant content on the new site?) Having to compete with your old site doesn't sound ideal.
If for some reason the old site is out of your control - can you get links from the same place as your old site did? Use Open Site Explorer to take a look at he inbound links to your old domain.
What are the keywords that really matter to your business? Where are the customers, your strongest offerings and the most vulnerable competition?
Can you identify any low hanging fruit? Are there any keywords that are less competitive, easier to rank for, buy maybe with less traffic value? If you can get some of this ranking easily you'll get a quicker increase in traffic initially than spending a lot of time/effort attacking a very competitive keyword.
Are there any existing (real world) business relationships that you can use to get links?

My news site not showing in "In the news" list on Google Web Search
I got a news website (www.tapscape.com) which is 6 years old and has been on Google News since 2012. However, whenever I publish a news article, it never shows up "In the news" list on Google Web Search. I have already added the schema.org/NewsArticle on the website and have checked it if it's working or not on Google structured data testing tool. I see everything shows on on the structured data testing tool. The site already has a news sitemap (http://www.tapscape.com/news-sitemap.xml) and has been added to Google webmaster tools. News articles show perfectly fine in the News tab, but why isn't the articles being shown on "In the news" list on the Google web search? My site has a strong backlink background already, so I don't think I need to work on the backlinks. Please let me know what I'm doing wrong, and how can I get it to the news articles on "In the news" list. Below is a screenshot that I have attached to this question to help you understand what I mean to say. 1qoArRs

Can forwarding users from one domain to a different domain damage rank and authority of first domain?
Preliminary Explanation: We launched a new website a couple months back but haven't had much luck in Google taking notice. One of the main attractions to our site is an old flash app that was made nearly a decade ago. As the original developer has long ago moved on and we are unable to figure out how to integrate it with our new site, we've been stuck hosting the flash app on a different domain. As such, users who come to our site and want to use the app must immediately navigate away from our site to this other domain. This has caused our primary domain's bounce rate and average site time to plummet while raising it for the other domain. My question: is this damaging our search rank and page authority with Google for this primary domain/site and counter-acting any other positive SEO changes we can make? How much weight does Google give towards bounce rate/average site time spent by users in its overall calculations for search rank and page authority? Our average site time for this primary domain is resting currently at 50-60 seconds, while for the secondary domain that hosts the old flash app it is 4-5 minutes.

What do you use for test rendering your dev site?
I'm redesigning our company ecommerce site and need to test render an infinite scroller to ensure that it is as SEO friendly as possible. My problem is that I cannot view it in Webmaster Tools since I am blocking the site from crawlers using robots.txt. I know I could simply unblock Google temporarily but I really would rather not make my dev site available to search engine crawlers.

Image with 100% width/height - bad ranking?
Hi, we have some articles like this: http://www.schicksal.com/Orakel/Freitag-13 The main image has a width of 100% and a height of 100%. Today, I've discovered that GWT Instant Preview has some troubles with rendering the page. We have CSS rules to deliver the image with the right dimensions. If a bot like google is not sending any screen height / width we assume the screen size is 2560x1440. Does this harm the ranking of the page? (Content starts below the fold/image) What is a "default" screen size for google? How do they determine if something is "above the fold"? Any tips or ideas? Best wishes, Georg.

AJAX & JQuery Tabs: Indexation & Navigation
Hi I've two questions about indexing Tabs. 1. Let's say I have tabs, or an accordion that is triggered with Jquery. That means that all HTML is accessible and indexed by search engines. But let's say a search query is relevant to the content in Tab#3, while Tab#1 is the one that's open by default. Is there any way that Tab#3 would be open directly if it's more relevant to the search query? 2. AJAX Tabs: We have pages that have Tabs triggered by AJAX (example: http://www.swisscom.ch/en/residential/help/loesung/entfernen-sie-sim-lock.html). I'm wondering about the current best practice. Google recommends HTML Snapshots. A newer SEOMoz Article talks about pushState(). What's the way to go here? Or in other words: How to get Tabs & Accordion content indexed and allow users to navigate directly to it?

Need help with image resizing (re: slow site)
I'm trying to figure out why I'm having speed issues with my site, and using google speed test to help me knock out some of the issues. One of issues deals with image resizing. I have a responsive design and so even though on the home page the normal width is 580 of the blog area, the full post can go up to 1170. So I size all of my images to 1170 wide and let CSS resize them depending on the size of the browser. (The images on the most recent post are a little bigger than this because I was testing something.) I was wondering what the best practice was in regard to what I'm trying to do. Also feel free to check out my site and let me know of any other feedback / advice you have. Thanks !:)

Responsive Vs Mobile Sites
I know this is some cutting edge technology, but I think that this will be a very important topic in the coming months, as html5/css3 becomses more and more the standard, or at least standardized, I think the topic of this in relation to SEO will also arise much more. My question is simple, is it better to code a responsive site, or a completely mobile site for a small company with no special needs (mobile ordering, ecommerce, etc...) I obviously know the visuall differences, and, personally, I think respomsive websites look better. From an seo perspective, my big thing is for the resizing, for example, with WordPress, when you reach the tablet size you can set the sidebar to basically display:none, can that impact your website? I would really appreciate any feedback
