Sitemap for webshop?

Had a client today who contacted me regarding having no sitemap on his webshop (with about 2000 products). He told me that his design company, who had made his webshop, adviced him against putting up a site since it would be giving google to much information at once, hence making it stop visiting his webshop as much?
Well my first through was -okay this must be some kind of joke.
But with seo, there are always something, now and then, that still surprises you, So are there anyone else here, who could share some info on this? -
My thoughts exactly, never heard of any bad effects of having a sitemap if you don't mind your pages getting indexed. But glad to hear it wasn't just me who had missed a chapter in the big book of SEO.

I assume you mean an XML sitemap (in Google Webmaster Tools)? The only information that really contains is the URLs on the site. So, if, for some reason, you don't want Google to know about the pages on your site, then I guess a sitemap is a bad idea. If you want your pages to be indexed, though, you're shooting yourself in the foot.
I will say that I think it's important to focus your sitemap and definitely don't use non-canonical URLs or pages you don't want indexed. It should be a "clean" list, so to speak.
Some people don't think you should have a GWT account at all, but I find that to be pure paranoia in 99% of cases. If you're going to rank on Google, they need to know about your site. Even if you're pursuing black-hat tactics, I don't see what information the root account or sitemap would contain that would harm you.

Hello friends, I have this doubt for a long and i want to share it with you. In our agency many clients have a PHP template for the home page of their sites, and also have a blog with wordpress as CMS. When i am optimizing sitemaps, I have two separate files, an index of Sitemaps created with Wordpress SEO by Yoast (which inside has separate Sitemaps tags, categories, posts, pages, authors, etc.) and on the other hand the home page sitemap with the subsections. As you know the sitemap generated by "Wordpress SEO by Yoast" is dynamic as it creates the sitemap according to current site content, and is updated every time a new entry is raised or modify any URL. This makes it very practical. I can not have a unique index sitemap sitemaps nesting inside another, as it is not allowed by Google or Sitemap protocol. I read in the Google Support you can upload multiple sitemaps to Search Console but does not say anywhere on upload multiple sitemaps index, or a combination thereof. In my case, I would have to upload two separately files, the dynamically generated with wordpress and the manual created for the PHP template. In my opinion there is no problem and Google will index everything properly performing it this way, but I wanted to share it with you to see how you solve this problem and what experiences had. Our urls for adwords are slightly different from current urls presented on site (weused htaccess to help create shorter urls). How important is it that the adwords url match the sitemap url for keywords on those pages?
Hello, We have dynamic urls that we have made into short urls through htaccess and code manipulation. Some of our adwords urls are different from our page urls - for example a) Latest version of page www.abc.com/x-y-z.html b) Previous version of url www.abc.com/x+y+z.html c) raw original version www.abc.com/yyy/zzz?category=X&Product-code=Y etc etc. Would my ranking for keywords on the page improve if I diligently made all of them the same? They all go to the same page even now, and no 404 errors or anything. Thanks Sam

Sitemap for Mobile Version of Site
Hi, I just did a mobile version (http://m.vietnamvisacorp.com) of my site (http://www.vietnamvisacorp.com). And was looking for some guidance on where to put it in the sitemap. Do i need an entirely new sitemap for mobile site, or do i just add to my existing .xml of desktop site. Thank you!

Sitemap generator and /index.htm
I use DMX Zone sitemap generator in Dreamweaver. When generating the sitemap, it includes both http://www.domain.com and http://www.domain.com/index.htm. Should the /index.htm be deleted from the sitemap, or will the 301 redirect take care of that? Best,

Submitting multiple sitemaps
I recently moved over from html to wordpress. I have the google sitemap plugin on the new wordpress site, but in webmaster tools, it's only showing 71 pages, and I have hundreds, but many are html. Is it okay, to submit an html sitemap as well as the wp sitemap that's already in there?

Tool for Generating Sitemap/ URL List
HI, I'm looking for a tool that'll generate a URL list for a site. I looked at this thread here http://www.seomoz.org/q/online-sitemap-generator which came up when I searched for sitemap generator. However, I don't need a sitemap per se, and I don't need to submit it to Google - just a list of pages is what I need.If it updated automatically, that would be useful as well. Anyone know of a tool, on or offline? Or anyone used Xenu and know if it's what I'm looking for? Or is there a simple solution that I'm missing? Thanks.
