Designing path structure - readability or keyword density
-
We are looking at redesigning our URL structure to accommodate our expansion. This gives us a chance to change the path, but we have found conflicting advice on readability vs. keyword density.
These are our three options.
mywebsite.com/s/birmingham/restaurants (Keep it short so that the keywords dominate the path)
or
mywebsite.com/search/birmingham/restaurants (Accurately describe the content on the page)
or
mywebsite.com/top/birmingham/restaurants (Be a bit spammy and include a word often associated with our inbound searches)
Does anyone have any experience on what works best?

Thanks for all responses, extremely useful.

Hi -
Here in this case, it comes to readability.
All have, Birmingham and restaurants are the 2nd and 3rd level subfolder, so they have the same impact.
In my view, it should be as simple as site.com/restaurants/birmingham, where the restaurants your main identifier of the keyword is closer to TLD.
Zomato.com does it very good, you can checkout that as well to inspire yourself.
Also booking.com is to some extent good.
If have to choose between the 3, i'd go with the first one

Hi,
I think your first option is the best. This is why I think so:
- I like short URLs - they look nicer and are less likely to be miss-typed
- The word 'search' is not one of your keywords, so unnescessary in the url
- You're right that using 'top' could be a 'bit spammy' - Also, if people's search behaviour changes and they stop searching for 'Top ...' then you may come to regret putting all your eggs in that basket (as it were). I personally wouldn't take the risk.
If you do change the URLs, make sure you do proper 301 redirects from page to page (e.g. old Brirmingham Restaurant page should forward to the new version of it, NOT just the homepage). Also, submit your xml via WMT, and with any super-important pages you can use the Fetch as Google tool which allows you to submit the page to Google's index.
Good luck with your site overhaul!

URL structure
Hello all, I am about to sort out my websites link structure, and was wondering which approach to our services page would be best. should we have: services/digital-marketing & services/website-design etc or: digital-marketing/website-design & digital-marketing/seo Basically I see digital marketing as the top level category that is the umbrella term for all of our digital services. But would it make more sense to have service to be the main category and digital marketing within that (along with all the other services from web design to seo)? all thoughts welcome!

What is the best way to target two keywords with one website?
I have a client that needs to target two different citys for her service. I have her front page ranking first page for one of the cities, but I have tried all sorts of things and can't get her front page to rank first page in the second (and less competitive) city. I know the drill about making a second page and trying to rank that page but is there a better way?

Link Structure
On my site I have a dropdown menu going across the page at the top to all of my categories on each page, I also have a similar structure going down the side going to the same categories, is this acceptable or would Google count this as double the internal links?

Optimizing for another keyword than the menu name
Hi I would like to hear if someone could help me decide whether or not it is important regarding SEO that the menu name is the same as the keyword we want to rank for. The site is a static site and one of our most important keywords. To give an example. Our menu name is "cars" and we want to rank for "cheap rental cars".

Is 1 design better than another?
I'm tracking two of my sites joeandcindy.com and minnesotashortsaleteam.com, both sites were done in wordpress however by different web designers. the Minnesota short sale site has gotten high rankings for several key terms without doing any link building or really any other off site optimization. I'm getting ready to have another site built and I'm wondering if there is something simple in the basic architecture of the site that is superior with the minnesota short sale site vs the joeandcindy.com site. If you could take quick glance and point me in the right direction I would appreciate it. Thanks www.Joeandcindy.com www.Minnesotashortsaleteam.com

Singular X Plural on keywords
Hi there... I´s always confused about which one should I focus, keywords in singular or plural. Some says: "look at Google Insight and look which one has more traffic", other says "go for the plural, because you´ll get both keywords at the same time (ex: dogs and _cat_s). Which one is the right way ?
