Webmaster Tools vs. Google Trends data doesn't add up
-
I am investigating a two-month 25% drop in organic traffic from Google to a client's site. When I turned to the Webmaster Tools data for the site, there is a clear, gradual drop over the course of a couple months both in impressions and clicks. In general, the drop occurred across many pages and for a large number of queries; there wasn't a core group of keywords or pages that saw the drop...it was more sitewide. Yet, the average rankings reported by WMT were, for the top 100 or so landing pages, not significantly different.
The site hosts information about medical conditions, and I wouldn't expect any time-related variations in search volume, and this was confirmed by looking at Google Trends data for a number of the top keywords. I started to look at the data by query for all the top keywords (all ranked in the top 10), and saw the following general trend: impressions were down, rankings stayed in the top 10, and Google Trends showed either flat or rising volumes.
So I am trying to make sense of that. If the search volume trend did not decline and rankings held inside the top 10, then how could the number of impressions drop significantly? Am I trusting the WMT data too much? But the reality is that the volume of traffic measured by Google Analytics from Google organic did indeed drop the way Webmaster Tools show it.

You're welcome! One last suggestion I'd make is if you have the budget, to augment Moz rankings with daily rank tracking. Weekly might be enough, but if you want to turn it up a notch try Authority Labs. I find them accurate and robust for daily rank tracking.

We have WMT data monthly, and are setting up a Moz campaign for the site so that we'll have weekly de-personalized data moving forward. Will also take a look at the SEMrush data. Thanks for the suggestions.

Also, you can try to see if SEMrush has any past ranking data - depending on the volumes, you might find something: http://www.semrush.com/

I wouldn't call it inaccurate, it just operates a bit different. For example;
- It's only when a page ranks - the "avg position" is only when someone actually searched, and the page ranked somewhere - it does not calculate a hypothetical ranking
- It's averaged over time periods - when you are looking at average ranking - the time period can muddy numbers. Shifting in actual ranking over 2-3 months might show an "average" position of 5, but actual could have been 5, 2, 7, 15, 1, 6, etc over time
- It's averages for logged in, logged out, search plus your world etc - rank checkers give a constant number based upon trying to de-personalize. But WMT is averaging personalized rankings, G+ "search plus your world", localized rankings etc - which is a muddy number as well.
In short - tracking rankings give you a steady ranking eliminating changing variables. I'm sure WMT is accurate, but there's a lot more moving parts so it's suspect to these things and can not be looked at as "rankings" but rather an actual look at where you happened to rank when a page did show up in someone's search.
-
For that time period we don't have a second source of rankings data. Should there be reason to believe that the Webmaster Tools ranking data is not accurate?
-
I think your first step should be to verify rankings with another tool. Hopefully you've tracked rankings somewhere else? Do you see any changes there?

Google Analytics Automated Reporting
HI all, I tend to do a big reporting powerpoint deck using screenshots from google analytics and tables I create year end and mid year. It's like an 80 page report for the 10 webisite swe have and then I go ahead and make annotations as I see from the data. That being said this can take a lot of time, up to a 40 hours of time to pull it all together or more which is challenging when you have daily meetings. Anyhow, I've looked into automating and tried a couple things: 1. Tableau- but it keeps crashing and seems tedious 2. Dashlane and supergrabber- seem a bit tedious to set up too. Anyone have ideas on how to better shar ereporting in the organization in this type of format for a website (websites)? Organic, paid, traffic, etc. Laura

Increase in 404 errors in Webmaster Tools
We have recently updated our website www.cooke.co.uk and twice webmaster tools have reported an increase in 404 errors. However, these errors are not for normal pages, they are things like http://www.cooke.co.uk/?post_type=crown_enquiry&p=1045 I have used the redirection tool in WordPress to redirect all these links to the homepage but does anyone know why this is happening since it is the second time I had to do it. Thanks.

Pinterest links have been growing in Webmaster Tools
I've been using Pinterest for a couple of years now. It has been great in promoting our brand and generating referral traffic. My question is this. I've noticed in Webmaster Tools, in the "Links to your site" section, that my links from Pinterest has really shot up.It's gone from 3,500 links, 6 months ago, to over 23,000 recently. Those of you using Pinterest, have you seen a similar increase? Just wondering if Google is recognizing more of the links, even though they are "no-follow" links.

Why does Google dislike us so?
Hi all, Over the past 18 months one of the sites I look after, www.english-inns.co.uk, has taken a massive dip in Google rankings (as per the graph attached). To give you an idea of what the site is about, we're effectively the largest directory of inns in England and have a mixture of exclusive offers direct from member inns but also have some affiliate links thrown into the mix. In terms of steps taken to remedy our falling out of grace with Google, these have included: A complete website redesign Removal of any duplicate content 'Adding value' by including interactive maps, better search functionality, promoting exclusive offers, etc. Unfortunately none of this seems to have helped our situation and we are now sitting at some pretty horrible places in Google's SERP's. For example, even for the keyphrase "english inns" we only rank #5 and this is a term associate with our brand! Perhaps I'm missing something obvious here... can anyone see any glaring issues with the site? Any help would be most appreciated Mozzers. Cheers google-analytics.png

Have You Ever Gotten False or Odd Notifications from Google Webmaster Tools?
I just got an email for one of my client websites from Google Webmaster Tools letting me know that the Google Bot could not access the website? The notification indicated that there may be a robots.txt issue that prevented crawling, but that they would try something to crawl it again. In this situation, we had just created a new Webmaster Tools account for the client, and there were (are) two GWT accounts now for the website, one that is incorrectly set to http://clientwebsite.com and the other that is set to www.clientwebsite.com. One of them reports zero errors, and the other reports an odd crawl error. Anyone encountered this type of thing before?

Google Analytics
Hello In Google analytics you can obtain the number of visits as a result of non-paid search. You can also set up custom reports to find the number of organic searches. The numbers are different, so what is the obvious difference between these two metrics that I'm missing. Thanks in advance for any assistance. Neil

Google Analytics Options
A couple of months ago, I read about a new web stats application that is real time but more importantly let's you track user actions on a page (i.e. which buttons were clicked for example). This information would obviously be very helpful in continuing to improve site performance. Anyone have suggestions or know the name of this application? I do not mind paying but am not looking for an enterprise class application.
