Started linkbuilding, traffic drops
-
So I have a couple 3 year old projects I left intact for the last 2 years. Lately I tried to revigorate them. I started to build links to pages that used to be in Google top ten, but the more links I build, the more I lose out on traffic.
The main keywords stay around the same position, I suppose the loss in appearances and traffic that can be seen in webmaster tools is mainly due to long tails I do not check the rankings for.
I want to ask you guys if anybody have experienced similar data?
I suppose it might be due to the exact anchor tags that I have used 3 years ago, so I already started removing those to see if it has a positive effect. I wanted to ask you, maybe somebody has experienced the same and already knows the reason and a solution for this phenomenon?

Thanks for that Bryan

You hit the nail on the head Andy! If I was part of the Moz Team, I'd endorse that!

Thanks.
I already have switched from using KWsin my anchors, I am just waiting to see results. I have not done much SEO in last 2 years, so my old habits get stuck with me, I am trying to leave them behind.
Thanks, for you response, I am definately more sure how to do it now.

That sounds to be your problem right there. This isn't a viable linking solution any more and will do you more harm than good.
In order for links to succeed now, you need to be thinking linkable assets (what does your site have that people want to link to) and outreach (contacting site owners to inform them of this).
When looking at links back into the site, you don't want to be using keyword rich anchor text either. This will draw unwanted attention from Google, so always use neutral anchors such as the domain, brand or something as simple as a 'click here'.
I would stop doing what you are right now though and focus on quality over quantity.

I am mainily targettng article directories PR 2+, domain 3-4+ years old. I write 1500-2000 character unique articles, with a variation of my target phrase being the title of the article, and therefore the title of the page where it becomes published. I place 1-3 links back to my own site with different anchor texts, that are never exact match for my keyword.
Any idea?
By the way: do you use title tags when you link back to your own page?

Without seeing the sort of links you are building, it is very difficult to know exactly what is being done and how good the links are.
What sort of sites are you approaching for links? How are the potential link partners being acquired? It sounds to me like the links you are building are not favourable, but as I said, impossible without seeing examples or until I understand what types of sites these are.

Root-Domain vs Subdomain Linkbuilding
Hello Mozzers! Couple of days ago I received a request to start optimizing a wordpress website, the domain itself has been around for around 10-12 years so it's it can be considered as one that has real history behind it. The page has been moved from HTML/FLASH to wordpress about 3 - 4 years ago and hasn't been any SEO maintenance on it. The site used to rank for first position with several keywords, but now understandably, it has greatly decreased. My main question would be, that when I've checked the root domain's and the subdomain's metrics with MOZ Open Site Explorer, the sub domain (with "www.") showed a PA 40 and 90 external links while the root domain (without "www.") only has 27 PA and 6 External links. I know that the 301 or server redirects only transfers about 90% of the link juice to the targeted URL but the difference between the 2 results seem way too big for me. What do you think? Is this normal?

During future link building is it more beneficial to target the root domain so the page won't lose that "10%" by redirecting the new link from sub-domain to root domain?
Is it possible to get more juice transferred? Thank you very much,

Linkbuilding backlinks list to linkpartnes embed in website?
We do backlinking for clients. And for this we also create a backlink page for linkingpartners (afcorse not all link have a backlink). For easy maintaince it would be handy if we can create a page on our server that is embed on the website of our clients. Is it possible to do this so there is no negative SEO? (google will rate this page and the content perfectly) best regards, Vincent

Starting a new site's link campaign... how to approach it?
Over the last few years I have been building content in my niche that I believe rivals some of the best content out there and deserves some attention. Although I have a plan to produce alot more content which I believe will take the quality and quantity of my content into a position among the top 5 or top 10 sites in my niche in the next 1-2 years, I decided that making that massive investment in content production irrespective of a consistent marketing plan is a recipe for failure because I need the positive feedback loop from site visitors to begin now, not in 2 years. Right now I'm in a position where I'm producing content that I think is better than alot of what's out there, and it's just not ranking the way I believe it should. I think I need to do a legitimate link building campaign to establish the website a little more firmly and put it on more level ground with some of its competitors. In Majestic SEO's "fresh index", most of my site's immediate competition have no more than 500 new domains in their links, though the biggest one has some 2,000. How can any link building effort I might take on possibly compare to links of this scale? Is there some "rule of thumb" for how many quality links I should aim for to get on square ground with some of the competitors on the lowest rungs? And if I try to build that many links at once, do I risk sending signals of untrustworthiness? (Assume I'm not going to be looking for any shoddy links, and in general will aim to follow Google guidelines.)

When do backlinks start helping?
I have been working hard at getting quality backlinks but I had a lot of keywords slip in rankings this week. This may because I have been extremely busy for a week and haven't added a lot of content to my site. But I thought the backlinks would be helping. How long does it take backlinks to start boosting your site and what results should I see? I am focusing on getting backlinks from a site with a PR of 7. The others have a PR of 4-5. They are the BEST sites in my niche.

Does google penalize you for linkbuilding in blogs that are non related to the topic of your website? Are there any positive benefits to link building in unrelated blogs?
