Started linkbuilding, traffic drops
-
So I have a couple 3 year old projects I left intact for the last 2 years. Lately I tried to revigorate them. I started to build links to pages that used to be in Google top ten, but the more links I build, the more I lose out on traffic.
The main keywords stay around the same position, I suppose the loss in appearances and traffic that can be seen in webmaster tools is mainly due to long tails I do not check the rankings for.
I want to ask you guys if anybody have experienced similar data?
I suppose it might be due to the exact anchor tags that I have used 3 years ago, so I already started removing those to see if it has a positive effect. I wanted to ask you, maybe somebody has experienced the same and already knows the reason and a solution for this phenomenon?

Thanks for that Bryan

You hit the nail on the head Andy! If I was part of the Moz Team, I'd endorse that!

Thanks.
I already have switched from using KWsin my anchors, I am just waiting to see results. I have not done much SEO in last 2 years, so my old habits get stuck with me, I am trying to leave them behind.
Thanks, for you response, I am definately more sure how to do it now.

That sounds to be your problem right there. This isn't a viable linking solution any more and will do you more harm than good.
In order for links to succeed now, you need to be thinking linkable assets (what does your site have that people want to link to) and outreach (contacting site owners to inform them of this).
When looking at links back into the site, you don't want to be using keyword rich anchor text either. This will draw unwanted attention from Google, so always use neutral anchors such as the domain, brand or something as simple as a 'click here'.
I would stop doing what you are right now though and focus on quality over quantity.

I am mainily targettng article directories PR 2+, domain 3-4+ years old. I write 1500-2000 character unique articles, with a variation of my target phrase being the title of the article, and therefore the title of the page where it becomes published. I place 1-3 links back to my own site with different anchor texts, that are never exact match for my keyword.
Any idea?
By the way: do you use title tags when you link back to your own page?

Without seeing the sort of links you are building, it is very difficult to know exactly what is being done and how good the links are.
What sort of sites are you approaching for links? How are the potential link partners being acquired? It sounds to me like the links you are building are not favourable, but as I said, impossible without seeing examples or until I understand what types of sites these are.

Wrong page ranking and rank drop, help!
Dear Moz community I would like to hear your advice about our current SEO problems. Our website is www.poolsonline.nl. This is a website where people can learn the Polish language on our website. This website has been online since 2007. The website got really outdated, so we built and launched a new version on March 1st (one month ago). We have created a salespage that we would like to rank for the keywords 'cursus Pools' (Polish course) first of all and 'pools leren' (learn Polish) secondly. The page is https://www.poolsonline.nl/cursus-pools-leren-spreken/ The old website was on rank 4-5 (roughly) for 'cursus Pools' and 'pools leren'. When we launched the new website we were on the top 5 with two of our pages. We were even on rank 1 and our salespage was also showing on the first page and often also in the top 5 (below the 'wrong' page of ours). We got quite a lot of trafic and new clients. However the problem was that the wrong page was ranking higher. We wanted our salespage to rank and not our home page (https://www.poolsonline.nl/) and not our free lesson (https://www.poolsonline.nl/lessen/groeten-en-gesprek-voeren-in-het-pools-les-1/). So what we did: Read/watched recourses about this problem: https://mza.seotoolninja.com/blog/wrong-page-ranks-for-keywords-whiteboard-friday and https://mza.seotoolninja.com/blog/wrong-page-ranking-in-the-results-6-common-causes-5-solutions and others. Removed the keywords (cursus pools en Pools leren) from the wrong pages (home and free lesson pages). Optimized the Salespage for these keywords Improved internal linking with these key words to our salespage Worked on link building for our salepage. We got about 5-10 links to our salespage in the first week of March (5 seems to be significant for this competition and we are working on more). These links are not yet in Moz OSE, but Google has indexed these pages and links. For reference, here are some of these links (not all): http://www.iculture.nl/apps/ik-spreek-pools-taalcursus-pools-op-iphone/ http://linktopoland.com/nl/cursus-pools-leren-spreken/ http://naukaholenderskiego.pl/artykuly/aplikacje/rozmawiamy-po-niderlandzku-aplikacja-na-iphone-i-ipad/ http://pnkv.nl/nieuwsbericht.php?bericht=rozmowy-po-polsku-juz-po-6-miesiacach http://poolsewoorden.nl/pools-leren/aanmelden/ http://poniderlandzku.nl/ Shared and promoted our salespage on social media What we expected: Our salespage to show up on top for these keywords Our ranking to improve What happened: Our salespage disappeared all together from the search results for these search terms (it does show up for more specific search queries, for example 'cursus pools leren spreken') Our site seems to keep dropping lower and lower. We are now on the bottom of page 1 or on page 2 for 'cursus Pools' and 'Pools leren' and not with the desired page Questions we have for you to help us: Why do you think our salespage is not showing up anymore for these keywords ('cursus pools' and 'pools leren')? Do you think we got a penalty for over optimization or bad links? What can we more to get our salespage to rank for these keywords? (we are working on building/earning more links) What can we do to restore our rankings and not drop lower anymore? Do we need to give our efforts more time? How long? Any other adivce? Thanks so much in advance!

Response rate in a linkbuilding campaign
Good afternoon, We will be starting our linkbuilding campaign in the next couple of days. Initially we will contact the authors of editorial content where our competitors are mentioned as one tool in a list of tools. We want the author to add us to the list as an additional tool. What success rate shall we expect, in terms of the % of people who include us vs the number of people we contact? Thanks in advance!

Losing traffic - What are we doing wrong ?
Hi, my ecommerce site has been losing organic traffic/ranks for the past 12 months. I don't have any active seo campaigns. after using link detox tool and submitting a disavow file for low quality links to google about 8 months ago, site has picked up some traffic may be about 10% but after few months it started to lose traffic again. there is no manual penalty on site. I would appreciate any and all suggestions at this point to help gain some traffic/traction. Anything that would point us in the right direction would be very helpful. here is my url http://goo.gl/udynRR thank you nick

If a bad link domain drops from my site do I regain authority.
Hi Guys, I wanted to know for example if 2 years ago I purchased SEO from some guys that were building links to sites that had very high PR which was important way back when. And now those links are negatively affecting my SEO stopping me reaching position 1 for a term 'replacement keys' and we are stuck in position 2. If the sites were to be reset or domains sold for those sites that were linking in do you think this was remove the penalty on us as a knock-on effect. Thanks James

Penguin issue or wrong linkbuilding strategy?
Quite a few month ago before Google implemented Penguin algorithm I had a great situation. After 24th of April my ranking and traffic dropped instantly. Here a a screenshot from my GA: http://imageshack.us/a/img15/4717/screenshot20121013at120.png I have reviewed my linkbuilding strategy and on-page optimisation however some keywords which dropped out of page 5 don't want to come back even close to page 1. I would appreciate a professional advise on how my strategy, on-page optimisation can be improved. For those who are interested here is my domain: http://www.desertsafariabudhabi.ae The keyword which is more interesting for me is "desert safari abu dhabi". Thanks in advance, Russel
