How can we improve our traffic?
-
Hi everyone, thanks for taking a look at this. We are looking at improving our traffic for our website. We are a tour company based in Thailand that caters to 18-25 year olds, mainly in the UK and USA.
Our site is - http://www.starfishvolunteers.com/
A few years ago the now ex-team hired an SEO company who outsourced to a team in India. Things were considered to be going very well in terms of traffic but I suspect that a lot of it was shady link building tactics. The site was designed poorly, urls were a mess and there was a lot of misinformation on there. Fast forward a few years and there is a new team in place, we redesigned the site, added a blog & booking system, cleared out the misinformation and got ourselves a Moz Pro subscription.
I only have Google search stats starting from 2013 and the total traffic (sessions) for that year was roughly 25,000. In 2014 traffic dropped to 19,000 and for the first five month of this year we are currently at 9,000.
Obviously reduced traffic doesn't look good and we would very much like to get our numbers back up.
We are tracking keywords in Moz and although we are ranking in the top 10 for a bunch of them the traffic just isn't going back up.
Here are our thoughts on why we might be losing traffic -
- We're targeting the wrong keywords.
- We are being penalised.
- The competition overtook us.
Right now we are at a bit of a loss because we don't know what direction to head in. Could it be our keywords? We would love to know what you think and sincerely appreciate the feedback. We will try and share any data that you think might be relevant or useful.

Hi there
Have you checked in Search Console to see if you have a manual action? That will tell you right away if you have been penalized or if you have any major site issues.
I would take a look at your backlinks - I see some directories and questionable links in Majestic. Also, when I checked SEMRush, I can see a pretty significant dip (attached) in May 2012, which was around the time that Penguin 1.1 hit.
I would also take a look at your on-site SEO, especially with your information architecture. Right now, a lot your site architecture is flat, meaning everything lives off the root domain.
Run through your site's metrics, including Domain Authority, and see what opportunities you have in improvement. Take a look at your content and take an empathetic stance with your audience - if you were a user or customer, what would you want to see? Does that line up with your research?
Take a look at the Academy section as well for Moz - lots of opportunities! Also, try doing some competitive analysis to see if you are missing opportunities that your competition is taking advantage of!
Hope this all helps! Good luck to you!

Had a very quick look. There is plenty to do. I have not looked from a technical side - Moz should do that for you, highlight deficiencies. I would suggest a keyword review. ie you are not on the first page in the US according to Semrush for your prime keyword phrases - volunteer thailand etc. So I would undertake a keyword analysis identify what you want - if that is it.
Best starting point is this blog post from Moz. https://mza.bundledseo.com/beginners-guide-to-seo/keyword-research
Also is Thailand as a volunteer destination this year as popular as it was a few years ago? Anyway you should focus on improving your ranking regardless.
So without doing much more work, as the keyword research is an internal - cant really assist - i would review you Title and H1 tags. Not sure I would start with affordable for your title & use the word experience. "Volunteering in Thailand" - maybe the optimum way but as said. There are 1000 things you could do, but in short i would start with keyword research in your instance, assume moz has crawled your site and you are addressing those issues.
Then build a strategy from there.
Good luck let me know if can assist further.

Can you rank for copyrighted/trademarked words that became generic terms?
Hi, As everyone knows, lots of generic terms we use everyday (depends from one country to another obviously) are trademark terms and technically protected.

Some examples here and there. So my question is ... are we free to rank (or try to at least!) for some of these keywords?
Some of these keywords vastly outranked their original generic terms and there is little to no value trying to get traffic from the latter. More specifically what about the keywords such as spin, spinning etc.? Thanks!

Is 11k-30k search traffic too high for a small blog with low domain authority to compete for? Is competition all that matters?
Trying to decide on a keyword phrase for my next post. One of the two phrases I'm deciding between has 100x more traffic but the priority is wayyy higher and the competition is just one point higher (54 vs 53). I'm hesitant to write on a post that gets 11k-30k monthly volume however b/c it just seems like too much traffic for a small blog with a domain authority of only 18 to compete with. But if the competition is nearly the same and the priority is higher, should I go for it anyway? I generally go for things with lower traffic thinking I will be able to better compete. Thanks!

Best way to find keyword to write a post that will get 50 visitors a day in Google traffic?
Hi - I have a blog with good PR (4) but not much search traffic. I am interested in targeting keywords on a single blog post basis rather than site wide. The current search traffic is so low I can't really base looking for keywords off the keywords people are already arriving from. The only tool I know is the Google keyword tool. I am tired of writing posts that get zero search visitors most days, so would like to try to target some terms that will get around 50 search visits per day to that specific post. Best approach?

How do I do SEO for a client who is starting a website that is in a niche with very little to none search traffic?
I am helping a client do On-page optimization and link building. His website is rather like thoughtcatalog.com, where it is a collection of random articles, opinions and anecdotes with no fixed genre. He also has a section devoted to artsy pictures of women. To make things worse, I am in a country (singapore) where the population is small, and the search traffic for his kind of content is minuscule. I have trouble finding out good keywords for him to target and I am considering not undergoing any serious keyword targeting at all (because it will detract from the style of his content). I did a little competitor research, and most of the websites in such a genre do not seem to do any keyword targeting at all! In such a case, how do i continue to help him with SEO? should I abandon keyword research? What should i do to help him earn traffic?

How can I best optimize only meta descriptions for an ecommerce?
Recently, a client ask me for a total change of all the meta descriptions in his website. For the moment, this is the only work he want to do in his website. I said him about the difficulty about doing SEO only optimizing some parts of the whole, but he didn´t care. He only wants to change meta descriptions! That's right, it's up to you! The website is about supplements for bodybuilding and fitness. Each category of the ecommerce deals with a type of product: testosterone boosters, protein powders, weight gainers, etc. And now my question is: Should I choose different keywords for each category of products, or the same keywords for the whole website? I started choosing the same general keywords for homepage and nav, and category related keywords for categories and products. Doing well? Thanks.

Can I target the same keywords on multiple sites?
I am launching a series of geographically specific sites to support my main website. Is there any problem with targeting the same keywords on both sites?

Can I get your input on keyword usage in the title tag
Hello fellow mozzers! I've been struggling with my title tag and would like to get your opinion. We provide IT services in the Los Angeles area. I've been doing keyword research for the past week and found about 400 keywords from various sources. I then looked at my top 5 competitors on Google and analyzed their homepage title tags, the most common keywords that they use in their title tags are: IT Support Los Angeles

Computer Support Los Angeles
Network Consulting Los Angeles
Network Support Los Angeles
IT Services Los Angeles Since it is recommended to have your title tag under 70 characters I've compiled the following title tag for my home page: IT Services, Network Consulting, IT and Network Support in Los Angeles which is exactly 70 characters, however my company name is an additional 9 characters, I think it would be wise to include in the title tag of the home page however I can't decide if I should exceed the limit by including the company name to the title tag or should I remove something from the title tag and then add the company name? 1. What do you guys think, is that a good title tag to use as is? 2. Should I add the company name without removing any keywords or remove a keyword? 3. I'm trying to target local traffic since I can't compete with the big dogs yet, so I want to be in the SERPs when someone searches IT Services Los Angeles, IT Support Los Angeles, etc... Do I need to add Los Angeles after each keyword, or I can use a single instance of Los Angeles like in the example title tag that I have? 4. For the other remaining 400+/- keywords I want to use some of them to create static pages and some for blog posts, is that the way to go? Any help or advice is greatly appreciated!!! Thank you!!!0
