How do I do SEO for a client who is starting a website that is in a niche with very little to none search traffic?
-
I am helping a client do On-page optimization and link building. His website is rather like thoughtcatalog.com, where it is a collection of random articles, opinions and anecdotes with no fixed genre. He also has a section devoted to artsy pictures of women. To make things worse, I am in a country (singapore) where the population is small, and the search traffic for his kind of content is minuscule.
I have trouble finding out good keywords for him to target and I am considering not undergoing any serious keyword targeting at all (because it will detract from the style of his content). I did a little competitor research, and most of the websites in such a genre do not seem to do any keyword targeting at all!
In such a case, how do i continue to help him with SEO? should I abandon keyword research? What should i do to help him earn traffic?

While it is true that English and Mandarin is used, English is predominantly used on the internet back here. The site also targets readers of a certain proficiency in English, and of a certain intellect.
I already did some keyword targeting, but I predict much of the traffic with come from referrals and social media. Overtime, if things go well, search traffic will increase from branded searches.

never abandon keyword research.
if these are article and stories why geotarget for only singapore? Singapore English and Chinese languages used there means you can target more than just the singapore audience I assume?

If I use a similar H1 on two landing pages for my website will it impact my SEO negatively?
I've been doing quite a bit of research on keyword cannibalization and duplicate content. I have two pages with nearly the same H1. The rest of the body is different, with a few similar overlapping keywords and points. Am I right in that nealry the same keyword in H1 on two separate landing pages will damage by SEO?

My start up brand name is 1# on Bing and Yahoo but not in the google top 50!
Hi all, I really hope you can help with this one! My brand/domain name "oboem" is nowhere to be seen on the Google rankings (france) but is number 1 on Bing and Yahoo. We are a young art crowdfunding start up and a full page article about us getting published in a magazine that will come out in december. "Oboem" is not a real word and no one else exept us should rank for it. 😞 I'm a bit out of ideas here. Thanks for the help

Most efficiënt way to retrieve search volume for thousands of keyword
Hi, I'm trying to figure out how I can efficiently get search volumes for large quantities of keywords. Unfortunately Keyword Planner has reduced their limit of keywords:
Keyword Research | | CB0001
"You entered too many keywords. Please limit the number of keywords to 1,000. You can also upload a file with up to 800 keywords." Weirdly, the file upload's limit is now even lower than the normal limit. A 1000 keywords a time will be a real chore when you want to retrieve search volume for 50.000 keywords. I tried SEMrush, but it does not suffice due to the fact that a lot of keywords in my language (Dutch) are not in the database. I also looked into the Adwords API, but this does not yet seem to have any implementation in Google sheets? Ideas are welcome!1 -
Live Search tool for text on websites
Hi everyone, Does anyone know of an online scanner / search tool that will do a live check for the occurance or a word or phrase on a website? I know you can use Google's site:domainname.com <word phrase="">but that is only checking what Google has in its current index for that site. I am looking for a tool that will do a live scan and search (i.e. as at the time) and then return a list of occurances it has found for the word or phrase.</word> Thanks in advance for this. Peter

Does "Using a dash in keyword name" affect SEO?
I sell machinery branded Co-matic. Most people search Comatic so I was wondering if I should change my keywords from Co-matic to Comatic. Would the change have a significant impact on SEO? Thanks!

Search Volume vs. CTR
Is it better to optimize based on search volume or click through rate? For example: If a keyword has a CTR of 19% and only 3,000 monthly searches, while another keyword that is relevant to that page has a CTR of 0.7% and 20,000 monthly searches, which keyword should that page be optimized for for better natural results and the bottom line?

Local SEO: By city, by multiple cities, or by region?
My client is a kitchen remodeling company in Sterling, Virginia and is trying to rank well in local results. I am struggling with keyword selection mostly because I am still learning about local SEO. The city the company is located is Sterling, however their business comes from several other close by cities like Reston, Herndon, and Fairfax (Nobody lives in Sterling so they don't care too much about owning that in search engines). Is the right strategy: 1. Choosing one city and focusing on that (kitchen remodeling in reston, VA) 2. Optimizing for multiple cities (kitchen remodeling, reston, herndon, fairfax...) 3. Optimizing for an entire region (kitchen remodeling, northern virginia) I know it's hard to answer this with little information but gut reactions would be appreciated. I am a new SEOmoz member so excuse me if this question is too specific for this forum. I'm still getting a feel for the community. Thanks! Sean
