My First SEO strategy - What's next?
-
I have recently embarked on an SEO strategy for my website. I've done a lot of reading and researching here on Moz and on search engine land and have got a good idea of how to build a basic SEO strategy. My own expertise is in PPC, so keyword strategy came easy to me. I rebuilt my website and focused on the on page SEO with every single page, this has brought really great results - instantly. For some of my chosen keywords I have gone from not being ranked to being on Google's first page - within a couple of days of my new website going live, for other's I've gone from being outside the top 50 to being ranked in the top 50, so my on page SEO has really strengthened my position and I now understand how important it is as a ranking factor.
I've also started to create content on a regular basis with 2 or 3 new blogs being uploaded each week, the blogs are based around my businesses main target market's - PPC, Web design, digital marketing etc. These blogs have a lot of links out to good websites, EG "to learn about adwords check out the adwords fundamentals course on lynda.com" and useful info like that.
I also signed up to whitespark for citation idea's so have started adding my site to all relevant directory suggestions that it gives me.
So my question is this, after seeing great early results because of my on page SEO, what are my next steps to increase my rankings?
And more specifically how do I use Moz to help increase my ranking?
During the week, I've started using Open site explorer to find my competitors backlinks, should I now spend my time trawling through these links to find opportunities to add links for my website where I can. Is this a good thing to be doing at this stage?
Anything else that I should be doing now to capitalise on my early results please let me know what it is and please tell me how to take full advantage of Moz to gain a better ranking.
I appreciate all insight!

Hi Michael,
If you are meeting face-to-face with customers and are targeting a local market, then Local SEO would also be a pool to wade into. Here's a good place to start, unless your business model is virtual/national only:

Here are some good advices from Umar and Clever PhD but here is one thing I would like to add here. When looking in to competitor’s link, always keep in mind that not every link your competitor is getting is a good link. You have to make a decision if the link is good or not.
When build link on any website, make sure that the website is a good website for your business: http://searchengineland.com/5-metrics-to-quickly-assess-site-quality-when-link-building-87028 this guide will certainly help you doing that.
Build few but quality links instead of building every link that your competitor’s are building.
Hope this helps…

Followerwonk will help you find influencers that may give you an opportunity to collaborate on additional content, spread your social media influence or even have those followers notice what you are doing and link to your site.

Fresh web explorer is kind of like Google Alerts. You set it up to look for keywords that you want to build content around and your brand name. If there is some content that you see published on one of your keywords, reach out to the site and see if they would add you. If a site mentions your website but does not link to it, then ask for a link.

Thanks very much for responding Umar and the info provided.
I'd love if you could elaborate a bit more on how exactly would I use Followerwonk and fresh web explorer to benefit my SEO strategy?

Hey Michael,
Welcome to the SEO World.. I really like you analytical approach to learn and implementing things perfectly.
Coming to your question, it is always a good approach to keep an eye on competitor's backlinks and make efforts to get the links on same places. I assume you're a MOZ Pro subscriber, start using Fresh Web Explorer also to keep an eye on every mention your competitors are getting and try to create something more meaningful assets so that you can easily target all those sites.
Remember, link building is on going approach and you don't need to rely only on competitor's backlinks. Get in touch with bloggers or influencers who belong to your industry (you may use Followerwonk for that) and try to obtain links in a way that it's become extremely difficult for your competitors to copy you.
Contrary to PPC, SEO takes time and you have to be patient to see things going in your way.
Use Moz analytics smartly and do let us know if you like to ask more specific questions.
Good luck!
Umar

Local SEO for a business serving multiple small cities
We have a local business that has a showroom in one city, and serve other 5 different small cities (in total 6 small cities). Search volume for the targeted keyword is very low (around 100 each plus minus) with a variety of competition levels. The product is expensive so this justifies the low search volume with a serious user intent.
Local SEO | | Nadiamo44
My question is given the low search volume for each keyword, what would be the best local SEO tactic for this. The website has a DA of 20 with competitors who has similar and higher DAs. Options I am considering: 1. Create unique pages for each location with unique content (no address available so I will have to use a city name postcode)
2. Create pages with the same content (but changing the area of service on the URL, H1 and mention the postcode and the radius of coverage twice in the content) and using a canonical tag to solve the duplicate issue.
In this scenario, I will create the main product pages with the address of the showroom, and mention the area of service covered for the other 5 cities.
3. Given that the 6 cities are part of a greater area, use the greater area to target them all. The keyword of the greater area has a lower search volume than the city keyword. This might work for keywords with low competition but not for ones with high competition levels. Not sure how well search engines will rank the keywords that include the greater area and show the pages for searches in small cities. Any advice on which option to go with or any recommendations for other solutions?0 -

Local SEO in business acquisition context
Hi everyone, I have a client who just acquired 4 business. Basically, the 4 compagnies will stop existing and my client will integrate the production at his own adress under his compagny name. My issue here is that my client wants to know what is the best solution for his local results. The 4 compagnies still have a website that present the new business name will a CTA redirecting to the new website. Their GMB account are still active. I was about to delete the 4 GMB accounts so when a customer do a brand research, the organic result will show the old business website that will present the new business with a CTA on the website. My thinking is that since the old and the new compagny will compete on the same keyword since they are in the same industry, I don't want the old compagny to be in competition with the compagny of my clients. Is there a better solution that could benefit the local SEO ? Thanks y'all !

Please tell me why we can't outrank a competitor with such poor metrics
Hi ! New here I'm trying to help a customer rank in the 1st page on a low-mid competition term in a specific city. I did a comparison of both URL in MOZ "Compare link Metrics" & we beat them on 85% of the metrics. They are on the 1st page, often top-3, the closest position we can get is about 13-15. The only higher metric they have is Domain MozRank & MozTrust + equity passing link (??) We are running WordPress with Genesis, they are running a custom site. See attached printscreen of the report. Multi location strategy - tracking keywords
I have very recently taken on a local business to manage and quite new to all of this. Your posts on the subject of multi-location SEO have been incredibly useful and the original blogpost on Local landing pages by Miriam Ellis is in my reading list and I am sure will be revisited regularly. I have another question on this obviously complex subject, what to do about tracking your keywords in MOZ Pro? I have subscribed and set up my main keywords and linked each to the 40 different service locations for our business, which is based in a single location but services a wide area, however this now gives me 400 keywords to track, which seems way too much and unmanageable. Can you give me some advice on how to make this much more effective? Many thanks, Sarah

Is using emoji's in meta descriptions a good or bad idea ? - I haven't seen it used much hence my query
Hello Mozzers, We need to redo some of our meta descriptions as our CTR's are not to good. I've noticed one of my competitors using emoji's which I personally think looks pretty good. They are using the Phone icon and ticks - as calls to action etc However, I can't see hardly anyone else using them on general serps ...so I am wondering , is it a bad idea ? thanks Pete

Changing Your Company's Name
Our firm is considering adding another person and adding that person's name to the firm. In terms of our online presence, what all would have to be done for that to work? For example: 1. We aren't changing the domain, but should we get a domain with the new name and redirect it to our current site? 2. Do I need ask the people who have linked to our site with our name in the anchor text to change it to the new name? 3. Do I need to get back to all our old posts/blogs/etc and edit them with the new name? 4. Can we use our current social media names or do we need to setup new accounts? 5. If we decide to just keep the onsite marketing the same, but change the name in regards to offsite markeitng (banners, billboards, etc) will that conflict have a very negative effect? 6. Anything else, anyone wants to point out would be great. Thanks, Ruben

I'm starting an internet marketing company along with a newspaper company
I'm starting a project for a newspaper company where I just started working as the in-house SEO. I'll have ownership along with the newspaper for this new internet marketing company and could use some advice.Should I build our new site on the newspapers domain with good pr already or start a fresh site from square one. I'm trying to weigh out the pro's and cons and I'm still undecided. This news company has been around since the 50's and the trust is there. But just one sticky situation with an uneducated client could hurt the reputation of the newspaper.Your thoughts please!
