How best to deindex tens of thousands of pages?
-
Hi there,
We run a quotes based site and so have hundreds of thousands of pages. We released a batch of pages (around 2500) and they ranked really well. Encouraged by this we released the remaining ~300,000 pages in just a couple of days. These have been indexed but are not ranking any where. We presume this is because we released too much too quickly. So we want to roll back what we've done and release them in smaller batches.
So I wondered if:
1. Can we de-index thousands of pages, and if so what's the best way of doing this?
2. Can we then re-index these pages but over a much greater time period without changing the pages at all - or would we need to change the pages/the URL's etc?
thanks!
Steve

I suppose you could also try creating a page that had links to all of the pages you want to noindex, then from Search Console use the Fetch as Google tool to fetch that page and choose the "Crawl this URL and its direct links" option to help Google see the noindex meta tags faster.

Great, thanks for this. Will look into this and probably give it a go.

You could add meta robots noindex to those pages and wait for Google to crawl them again and possibly remove them from the index. You can't simply remove them all from the index in one go.

Would You Redirect a Page if the Parent Page was Redirected?
Hi everyone! Let's use this as an example URL: https://www.example.com/marvel/avengers/hulk/ We have done a 301 redirect for the "Avengers" page to another page on the site. Sibling pages of the "Hulk" page live off "marvel" now (ex: /marvel/thor/ and /marvel/iron-man/). Is there any benefit in doing a 301 for the "Hulk" page to live at /marvel/hulk/ like it's sibling pages? Is there any harm long-term in leaving the "Hulk" page under a permanently redirected page? Thank you! Matt

DeIndexing pagination
I have a custom made blog with boat loads of undesirable URLs in Google's index like this:
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | Rich_Coffman
.com/resources?start=150
.com/resources?start=160
.com/resources?start=170 I've identified this is a source of duplicate title tags and had my programmer put a no index tag to automatically go on all of these undesirable URLs like this: However doing a site: search in google shows the URLs to still be indexed even though I've put the tag up a few weeks ago. How do I get google to remove these URLs from the index? I'm aware that the Search Console has an answer here https://support.google.com/webmasters/topic/4598466?authuser=1&authuser=1&rd=1 but it says that blocking with meta tags should work. Do I just get google to crawl the URL again so it sees the tag and then deindexes the URLs? Or is there another way I'm missing.0 -
Onsite calendar throwing out thousands of pages
Hi guys - I have just stumbled across an onsite calendar that's throwing out hundreds of indexable pages (some are indexing) - most of the pages are basically blank - just a day date and the calendar design on the page. How would you deal with this issue? I was thinking noindex but would prefer a solution where calendar isn't throwing out so many pages to begin with! Look forward to reading your thoughts, Luke

Ranking slipped to page 6 from page 1 over the weekend?
My site has been on page one for 2 phrases consistently from May onwards this year. The site has fewer than 100 backlinks and the link profile looks fairly even. On Friday we were on page 1, we even had a position 1, however now we are on page 6. Do you think this is Penguin or some strange Google blip? We have no webmaster tools messages at all. Thanks for any help!

Rel canonical on every page, pointing to home page
I've just started working with a client and have been surprised to find that every page of their site (using Concrete5 CMS) has a rel=canonical pointing to their home page. I'm feeling really dumb, because this seems like a fatal flaw which would keep Google from ranking any page other than the home page... but when I look at Google Analytics, Content > Site Content > Landing Pages, using Secondary Dimension = Source, it seems that Google is delivering users to numerous pages on their site. Can anyone help me out?! Thanks very much!!

Best SEO format for a blog page on an ecommerce website.. inc Source Ordered Content
Does anyone know of a page template or code I might want to base a blog on as part of an eccomerce website? I am interested in keeping the look (includes) of the website and paying attention to Source Ordered Content helping crawlers index the new great blogs we have to share. I could just knock up a page with a template from the site but I would like to investigate SOC at this stage as it may benefit us in the long run. Any ideas?
