We Are An SEO Company - Why Won't Google Believe Us?!?!

Hi All,
We are an SEO company based in Brisbane Australia.
We help lots of clients, most of which are now on page #1 for the majority of their keywords.
Except for 1:
US!
Organically we float between page #2-3 for the term "seo brisbane" and page #1-2 for the term "search engine optimisation brisbane"
However, when it comes to the local pack we are nowhere to be found.
Not only are we not in the top 3, but when you click "more places" to see how far out of the local pack we are, we are not there at all!!
For whatever reason, we can't get google to believe that we really are a SEO supplier.
I'm embarrassed to have to ask, but we just can't seem to work out why.
Would anyone have any ideas?
We know that our current website is letting us down and are 90% of the way through the build of a new one and we are confident that will help with our organic rankings but when it comes to why we are not showing at all in local results, I am at a loss.
Has anyone got any advice or troubleshooting they could help with ?

Since this was posted we have actioned the following:
- Removed the review we've posted ourselves.
- Removed the duplicate addresses.
- Remove the word 'level' on address.
And are still working on the following:
- Beating the numbers of our competitors in terms of reviews, backlinks DA, PA
- Reporting businesses using spammy techniques to rank on local search

Holy crow! There are a LOT of Internet marketing firms in Brisbane.

Go to Google, look up "SEO brisbane" and then click on the Map. Now, begin zooming in on the map, click by click. From my location in the US, it took me 9 zoom levels before your company appeared. You are 11th in the Local Finder view to the left of the map at this zoom level for me. So, the good news here is that your listing does exist. The bad news is, it's not making it into the higher echelons of Google's local rankings. I'm not sure if this is a classic case of the Possum filter, because the nearest business I see to you in the same category is over on Adelaide St (Code Digital), which looks to be a couple of blocks away. I've heard some anecdotal reports of Possum having an effect at that distance, but I can't say with 100% certainty here. Nevertheless, whether this is an artefact of Possum or not, the solution is likely to be same: you've got to convince Google that it is your business that deserves to show at the automatic zoom level instead of the businesses of your competitors.

First, you've got to root out problems. I noticed one oddity looking at your reviews. It appears that you've reviewed your own company in the past week. You should remove the review as this violates Google's guidelines and be SURE you aren't violating them with any other reviews you've gotten. You also need to root out any potential Google My Business duplicate listings. Unfortunately, Moz Local doesn't currently operate in Australia, so you may need to do this manually, or hire a company like Whitespark to help you root out duplicate listings or other problems with your citation set. I'm also curious about the way you've formatted your Google My Business address: Level 4/196 Wharf St, Spring Hill QLD 4000, Australia. It has been years since I've consulted with a local business in Australia. What is Google's standard formatting of floors/suites in your country? Should they come before or after the actual street numbers? I'd double check on that.

Next, you've got to do a competitive audit of the competitors who aren't being filtered out. You've got to stack up their numbers against yours (local ranking, organic rank, age of domain, age of listing, DA, PA of GMB landing page URL, review count, review rating, link profiles) to try to identify what elements of the competitor's presence Google is favoring over yours. Then, you've got to try to beat those numbers/stats.

Next, you should carefully comb through the businesses outranking you to see if they are violating any of Google's guidelines. For example, it appears that one dominant player (Webgator) may be spamming the business title of their GMB listing (they're listing themselves as WebGator SEO Brisbane) when this does not match the logo on their website. I'm unable to see street-level signage for them looking at Google Streetview, so I recommend that you a) drive over there and take a photo of their sign and B) phone them and see how they answer the telephone. If they are simply "WebGator" in either instance, then their addition of the keywords SEO Brisbane to their GMB title would be something you would want to report as a violation. You should do this same process for any other competitor who is outranking you with a spammed business name. And, of course, make sure your own hands are clean in this regard and that you aren't violating any guidelines.

Know that you are in an extremely competitive and crowded market. It's not going to be easy to move the ranking needle, but it's not impossible.

Test proximity factors. Where do you rank locally when you are standing in front of your business looking at your mobile device? How about 2 miles, 5 miles, 20 miles, 50 miles away? Remember that local rankings are NOT static and can alter drastically depending on the location of the searcher.

I'm not doing a genuine audit here. It's just a 5-minute glance from me, and one thing that is bothering me here is the fact that your business is coming up 12th organically for me for the search term, but isn't appearing until zoom level 9 on the map. This would make me anxious enough to do a complete audit, referenced in point number 4, and if I didn't have the in-house skills to do it, I'd hire a heavy hitting Local SEO for the job.

We are bottom of page #1 for "search engine optimisation brisbane" but when it comes to local listings for "seo brisbane" google doesn't seem to think we are of any relevance.

If you are a local Brisbane company then I would be making full use of local SEO and Citations. Get yourself listed in all of the safe local directories and you will be amazed. I did this and am now No.1 for my city.
Whitespark has a great guide for local SEO citations: https://whitespark.ca/best-citations-by-city/australia/brisbane/ and of course companies like Moz have their own local SEO tools.
One thing you could try as a last report is setting up a page on your site like this: yoursite.com.au/seo-brisbane - use internal linking to reinforce it and get local blogs and news sites to link to it. Have a grand website launch, a champagne party or something and get some of these guys to run the story! www.newspapers.com.au/brisbane.html

I've helped a couple of Web Design and SEO companies who have been in this exact position. They'd ranked plenty of local small business clients in relatively niche markets against competition which either hadn't bothered with SEO, or had often invested with a company that didn't do much. But their own site was struggling.
The main reason is that there's a lot more competition among SEO companies, and you'd hope at least some of them might know what they're doing. So it takes a bit more effort to sustain good ranking positions - aside from the usual step of making sure all your info is correct and updated for all local site listings, it's really about combining quality links and also quality reviews.
The local pack is always a bit of a mystery - sometimes it appears Google will pick random sites from the first few pages, even when some of them haven't done anything above type in their business name before closing down 6 months ago. But aside from the occasional fluctuation, you should be able to maintain a decent spot by making sure your listing is complete, you have some reviews, and you've optimised a relevant part of your site for your location as well.

Rather than saying Google not believing you, I would say that it's because you are new to Google. Keywords itself is an important factor which helps you climb your ranking. But having a flow in the content you are writing with the keywords must too have a flow and should not have any instance whereby you abruptly add in a keyword just to get the attention of Google. It takes time to climb up to the top ranks and besides keywords, there are other factors that contribute to your ranking. Over excessive use of keywords would make Google be suspicious and penalize you.
Everyone can look up to http://www.gsqi.com/marketing-blog/google-algorithm-update-february-7-2017/ a post relating to Google recent Algorithm Update - Analysis and Findings which I just recently read up on. (P.S it is a write-up by another person with video included by Google's Gary Illyes)
Do also make use of Moz Resources which is really useful as they provide guides for you to refresh on the Good, Bad and the Do & Don't when it comes to SEO.
Also, I feel you can also research on marketing content blog in the net, where tips and methods are recommended. I believe Moz too, have a lot of companies and people providing recommendations and answers.
Lastly, would like to let you know there is nothing to be embarrassed! We all have our troubles and through discussion, we can derive better answers for ourselves and for the others.

Why is a Google Listing Showing Up in a Different Town Than Its Address?
I have a client who runs a dental office on the outskirts of Racine, WI. His address specifically shows up as being in Racine, however, his GMB profile has always showed with the category of "Dentist in Mount Pleasant, WI" displaying below the photos. (Mount Pleasant is the next town over and his office straddles the line between the two towns in Google's overlay map of the town.) Obviously this is frustrating and I'm concerned that his location is hurting his ability to rank in the larger, more populous town of Racine. Have any other SEOs ever encountered this? And if so, how have you approached the issue? Location pages? Mentions of the location more often on the pages? tsLvH2B

Google Map Penalty or Odd Filter? Listing Goes Missing
Hello Moz. We have a law firm client who practices criminal defense law. Historically, he has been ranked for _years _in the map pack and first page of search for a variety of phrases. This is a law firm with twice the number of reviews of the next competitor, solid back links, and open 24 hours a day. Over the past 30 days, he now appears inconsistently in the map packs. Sometimes he is in the C slot and sometimes he does not appear at all. Most of the time he is not listed for specific legal phrases for DUI, DWI and criminal defense. When he is not listed in the A, B, or C slot, then he is actually gone completely. You click on More Places and his listing for the map is just completely gone. You can scroll down from listing 1 through 20+ and not find his firm in the Map listings. You would think he would just be further down on the list at 5 - 10. But it is just missing. However, when you change the filters for either rating or reviews, he suddenly will appear. In fact, he will be near the top of the list, but only on filtering. You can even clear the filter and he stays listed in typically the C slot too. However, if you refresh the page, he is gone again. My question is simple: Do you think there is some type of data issue or penalty in place? Or is this just how the filters work - suddenly showing a list that should appear in the main area. PS: If I am not clear on the above, I can send video evidence of this oddity.

Google Local Changes Randomly & Our Site Keeps Dropping Off Search
I work for a university where we have 2 law schools. We have our one school on the other side of the state that has been around for a very long time, and then a newer school that is right on our main campus that has been around for about 5 - 10 years now. The newer of the 2 schools is having so much trouble being able to claim the name of the school in google search. If you type in the name of the school the other school (the one that has been around longer) was coming up in the google local on the right of the screen and their web URL was never showing up in search. This is a huge problem because the accreditations of the 2 schools are different, and students are showing up at the wrong school for their interviews. Search will only show a domain name that used to be owned by the older school but now gives information for both of the schools. So it'll show up in search results, but only under that other domain and not their own domain that has their name in the domain name. This school has an updated google mybusiness listing, and a google+ page with the correct listing. I've added some schema data around the business address on their site and JSON for the google+ page, and have re-indexed their sitemap a few times after some changes have been made and we are using their name more in the site. This fixed everything for a short while and we were getting the appropriate google local listing and their site was appearing in search results above the site that advertised both schools. Now, after about 3 months, it has reverted. I had the older school showing up in the google local, and the site that advertises both schools is the ONLY domain appearing. I've re-indexed the site after finding out that Drupal's timestamps that they automatically add to sitemaps aren't optimized for how google reads it. This has gotten the local listing back, but I still have the wrong domain appearing, it is the one advertises both schools instead of the domain that has this school's information. I don't mind that the one advertising both shows up, but if a user is searching for that particular school I would really like to get that domain to appear first above the one advertising both schools and the older school. Right now the new school isn't even in search results except for being under the site that advertises both. I wasn't sure if this was something that Moz Local could help me fix by adding the listing across the web, or if there is something else on the sites I can be doing to help them solidify their name in google search/local. Also - is this subdomain that is advertising both of them hurting them or help them? I was thinking about taking that domain down to one page that acts as a direction source to the 2 domains rather than having a ton of information and keywords that take over the results for their name since that domain is older (and used to be associated with the old school only before the new school was built) Thank you for any advice on this issue as I'm still pretty new to SEO and to the university. What is the best SEO practice for listing multiple locations from the same business online?
Hello! The church I work for is launching its third location and we are needing to figure out what the best SEO practice would be when it comes to to listing all three of our locations online. Currently, we are listing the two locations we have as "Church Name - South Campus" and "Church Name - West Campus." Going forward, would it be better to list our 3 location names as: James River Church - South Campus, James River Church - West Campus, James River Church - North Campus or James River Church South Campus, James River Church West Campus, James River Church North Campus or list all three locations as "James River Church" Thank you for any advice you can give me!

How do you select a Google category for the SERPs?
Recently I was looking up law schools in Texas and came across a SERP listing I had never seen before. Google provided the category "law school" and narrowed it down by geographic location. I checked the code on both websites for schema and was unable to locate it. Furthermore, one GMB listing was claimed and another was not. I'm wondering why both Texas A&M School of Law and Houston College of Law showed up but University of Texas Law School did not. I have attached a screenshot of the SERP to see if anyone has seen this before or can provide any insight. Search term was "list of law schools in texas" but the same snippet showed up for "best law schools in texas." Thanks 8XHvZt4.png

Do You Know What's Triggering Your Local Packs?
Hey To All My Local Pals, Here 🙂 Recently, I watched a totally fascinating LocalU video in which Mike Blumenthal introduced a hypothesis that there may be a way to analyze what, specifically, is triggering a specific local pack. Now, Mike is stating that correlation is not causation in explaining this, but basically what he starts talking about at around 4:40 in the video is that what you are seeing rank well in the local packs may be demonstrably caused by what you see ranking organically beneath the pack, or may be caused by totally different signals. Mike says, _"If you're seeing the top 10 results are all IYP industry sites, and there's a pack showing, and the highest local site is 24 or something in organic, it's unlikely that that's what's triggering the pack. And so then you want to look at third-party triggers and see if that's what's actually triggering the pack." _ Obviously, all of us who do Local are familiar with the idea that a tremendous variety of elements contribute to pack rankings, but I am particularly intrigued by the idea of looking at the organic result beneath a pack and determining that there is little or no correlation between them, and this then driving one to look elsewhere for contributing factors. In a recent response to another thread here on Q&A, I discussed some common local pack ranking failure causes when organic rank is high. What I'd love to see is whether, if you look at some of your clients' desired packs, can you tell if organic signals are driving them, or can you see that it's not organic signals driving the pack, as Mike suggests. What, in those cases, does appear to be driving the packs? I'd be so interested in a discussion on this. What do you see? What do you think of Mike's suggestions?

New google maps listing was showing & now is not
Here is a brief description of what I am doing and what happened. I recently acquired a new client who had an unclaimed google business listing. We claimed the listing and within 2 days it was showing up for its main search term on Google. Almost immediately my client was receiving new calls from the listing. Within a week the listing no longer shows up with the other listings on the home page but does show up when searching on google maps. Does anyone have a lot of experience with Google+ & business listings? If yes, what are some of the most common reasons listings might be removed, shuffled around, increased or decreased in ranking, etc. Sincerely, Garret

Google Places & Google My Business
Hoping a local biz expert can help ... So all these Google business listing solutions are confusing me. I have Google Places and had been told for several months I would have a new dashboard. I assume I have it now because the interface is different now when I log in. I've noticed missing pictures, descriptions from some of our 70 locations, but so far that's it. But I also see a recommendation for Google My Business. Am I supposed to migrate over there or am I fine where I am. I just want a place to manage my G+ business pages. Thanks!
