Duplicate Content and Other Issues from Blog Tags and Categories
-
I have recently taken over the maintenance/redesign of our website and after setting up Moz I see many errors:
Duplicate content
Missing descriptions
Duplicate titles
etc.All are related to blog categories and tags.
My questions are: are these errors hurting us? Should I simply remove tags/categories from the sitemaps or bite the bullet and create content for every single category page?
Our site is https://financiallysimple.com/ and we are using Yoast plugin in Wordpress (if that helps)

Roman,
Good info here... still studying to try to make sense of how the "boxer" example (with very similar products) translates to "taxes" or "retirement" where every article is (supposed to be) very different.
Thanks again.

Cornerstone content
Cornerstone articles are the most important articles on your website. This is the content that exactly reflects your business. These articles should be relatively high in your site structure. In most cases, the
homepage directly links to these articles. If you could think of 4 pages you would like someone to read in order to tell them about your site or company, these would need to be the cornerstone articles. Therefore, these articles should focus on the mission or the most important products of your website or company.Taxonomies: Categories and Tags
Implementing categories and tags on your website is an important way to add structure to it. These taxonomies group content on a certain topic. When used properly, Google will understand the
structure of your site better. Categories have a hierarchical structure. There can be subcategories
within categories. Tags do not have a hierarchical structure. Think of it like this: categories are the table of contents of your website, and tags are the index.Categories and tags on your website is an important way to add structure to it. Duplicate content
Duplicate content means that the same content is shown on multiple locations on your site. As a reader, you don’t mind: you’ll get the content you came for. But it confuses a search engine: it has to pick
which one to show in the search results, as it doesn’t want to show the same content twice.Above that, when other websites link to your product, chances are some of them link to the first URL, and others link to the second URL. If these duplicates were all linking to the same URL, your chance of
ranking in the top 10 for the relevant keyword would be much higher. The solution for duplicate content is a so-called canonical link. A canonical link tells the search engines: yes, this content is duplicate,
and this one is the original content.Category archives are landing pages
Your category archives are more important than individual pages and posts. Those archives should be the first result in the search engines. That means those archives are your most important landing pages. Thus, they should also provide the best user experience. The more likely your individual pages are to expire, the more this is true. In a shop your products might change, making your categories more important to optimize. Otherwise, you’d be optimizing pages that are going to be gone a few weeks/months later.2 Categories prevent individual pages from competing
If you sell boxers and you optimize every product page, all those pages will compete for the term ‘boxers’. You should optimize them for their specific brand and model, and link them all to the ‘boxers’ category page. That way the category page can rank for ‘boxer’, while the product page can rank for more specific terms. This way, the category page prevents the individual pages from competing.

Is minor duplicate content on my website okay?
I know duplicate content across multiple websites is not a good thing, however I've always wondered about minor duplicate content on your own website. I know its good practice to have unique content on each page but what about the little stuff. For example on our website certain related pages share the same content in a right sidebar. Such as links to pdf leaflets, or "you can read our blog etc" . Is there a minimum number of repeated words required before its flagged as duplicate content? Another example is a customer gave two testimonials for two of our employees - the testimonials were identical other than the employee names - if these were posted on separate pages is it a problem for the site as a whole or for both those individual pages? Thanks

How to deal with duplicate content when presenting event and sub-events information?
Hi, I'm have a sport event calendar website.
On-Page Optimization | | ahotu
It presents events that may have multiple races.
The event has its own page as well as the races. example :
Event: /event/edinburgh-marathon-festival Races:
/race/emf-half-marathon
/race/emf-10-km
/race/edinburgh-marathon
/race/emf-5-km The pages may have a lot of information in common (location, date, description) and they all link to each other.
What would be the best practices to avoid having the pages considered duplicate content by Google? Thanks0 -
Duplicate Content - Blog Rewriting
I have a client who has requested a rewrite of 250 blog articles for his IT company. The blogs are dispersed on a variety of platforms: his own website's blog, a business innovation website, and an IT website. He wants to have each article optimised with keyword phrases and then posted onto his new website thrice weekly. All of this is in an effort to attract some potential customers to his new site and also to establish his company as a leader in its field. To what extent would I need to rewrite each article so as to avoid duplicating the content? Would there even be an issue if I did not rewrite the articles and merely optimised them with keywords? Would the articles need to be completely taken by all current publishers? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Duplicate Content - Deleting Pages
The Penguin update in April 2012 caused my website to lose about 70% of its traffic overnight and as a consequence, the same in volume of sales. Almost a year later I am stil trying to figure out what the problem is with my site. As with many ecommerce sites a large number of the product pages are quite similar. My first crawl with SEOMOZ identified a large number of pages that are very similar - the majority of these are in a category that doesn't sell well anyway and so to help with the problem I am thinking of removing one of my categories (about 1000 products). My question is - would removing all these links boost the overall SEO of the site since I am removing a large chunk of near-duplicate links? Also - if I do remove all these links would I have to put in place a 301 redirect for every single page and if so, what's the quickest way of doing this. My site is www.modern-canvas-art.com Robin

When it comes to duplicate page content how do I deal with correcting it. Its a dynamic e commerce site.
I am under the impression that with ecommerce sites this happens often and that there's a plug in or just simply not worry about it since queries will often find similar conent.

Will duplicate content supplied from a hotel provider damage my website, or simply just the pages that it appears on?
Hi, I currently have a lot of hotel listings pages with little or no content, as I'm scared that if I place duplicate hotel descriptions on the pages then Google will stop ranking the page. I've found that having descriptions of some kind do help conversion significantly, so I'm considering generating unique hotel descriptions on each main page (page 1 in each set of listings) - these are the pages that Google indexes. On subsequent pages (page 2, page 3 etc.) I'm thinking about resorting to displaying the duplicate affiliate content hotel descriptions - these pages can be crawled but are set to noindex. My question is, do you think this is likely to have an effect on my website in the rankings, and as a result push my primary pages (that contain 100% unique content) down in SERPs. Thanks Mike
