PRweb & PRnewswire

Hi Guys,
Looking for thoughts on press release websites in terms of link value. Recent press releases on both these sites have recently appeared in OSE with DA's of 93/98 and PA's of 47/48 - great stuff.
Given we can control anchor text and include links these are great opportunities to combine anchor text vs branded links, include citation and co-citations all from within the main body of the release too depending on the PR package you subscribe to.
So are these link opps as valuable as they appear or could they be devalued based on the fact they are sat on these PR sites? Might Google view them as no more important than links from ezinearticles? Are they frowned on even more as they might be considered paid links?
Further to this, if they aren't as high value as their DA/PA suggests then might an extra filter in OSE to account for this be useful?
Interested to hear your thoughts
Cheers

For what it's worth and to update my previous response, see this from Search Engine Land. I think the URL is self-explanatory:

Matt Cutts on press releases, as quoted by SearchEngineLand:
Interesting bit:
Matt clarified that the links in the press releases themselves don’t count for PageRank value, but if a journalist reads the release and then writes about the site, any links in that news article will then count.

Hi James,
We have used PRWeb for the last 10 years to release some quite compelling press releases that have worked quite well for our client’s in announcing new services or updates to existing services.
Your question are they valuable then yes initially and a well written press release supported by a good SEO and social media campaign can prove beneficial. As for a long-term linking campaign I don’t feel it is beneficial – the press releases are picked up as static content and placed mainly as is on a variety of websites that for the most part are not indexed by Google.
There is a very good article by Tim Grice about the very subject: Are you wasting your time with online press releases?
Thanks
Vincent

HTTPS & Redirects
Hi We're moving to https imminently & I wondered if anyone has advice on redirects. Obviously we'll be redirecting all http versions to https - but should I be checking how many redirects are in each chain and amending accordingly? If there's 4-5 in a chain, remove the middle unnecessary URLS ? Advice please 🙂

Pagination & View all option on Ecommerce site
Hi I want to add a view all option to our category pages as recommended by Google and to make it easier for the customer. I'm not sure how long this will take our developer, but is this an action that is worth doing from an SEO point of view? Will it add value? For me it will have value, but in terms of SEO actions should it be one I prioritise? I have issues with our pagination and think this would be the quickest way to solve it - http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/workbenches Any help appreciated 🙂

Proper Form for Title & Description Tags
Greetings MOZ Community: I operate a real estate web site in New York (www.nyc-officespace-leader.com) that I suspect has been hit by Panda 4.0. I believe a problem is thin content on product pages, which in my case are 350 listing pages. However I am also looking at how title and description tags are formatted for these 350 pages to ensure this is not a factor in the ranking drop. The title descriptions are written like this: <title></span><span class="webkit-html-tag">Flatiron loft for rent | West 21st Street | 1441SF $6604/month</span><span class="webkit-html-tag"></title> Is this sufficiently diverse? Will constantly repeating various street names, square footages and prices work against me? Will Google in a sense consider this thin or repetitive content? It does provide the visitor with key information. The descriptions meta tags are written along these lines: description" content="One of the most desirable full floor sublets in Midtown South. Recent build out, pristine condition, panoramic views, tech chic, spectacular. Top location." /><meta< span=""></meta<> From an SEO perspective are these critical tags written the way they should be? Thanks everyone!! Alan

Is Q&A on a website good or bad for SEO?
I am considering adding a Q&A section to my website and I have a few questions for you PROs!: is it a good thing for SEO? Or a potential pitfall for SEO? If it is used often and users post relevant topics related to the website content, will it help the overall DA and websites SERP performance? Are there inherent risks for website security when using a Q&A? Are there any other questions I should be asking? I am using Joomla! 3.0 with Stackideas Easy discuss/easy social. Thanks for any advice! BB

"Hotel" SEO & TripAdvisor
I am trying to learn a little more about Travel SEO, particularly in the "hotel" vertical. what are some of the top Hotel SEO sites out there and what are they doing right? Tripadvisor is great at SEO in general, but I've heard they struggle a little in the "hotel" vertical. Is there anything they can do to improve their rankings in this area? Does anyone have any suggestions, whether it be a far out idea or on-site optimization? Thanks!

Microdata & Competeing against Amazon in the SERPs
Hello... I have an ecomm clients who's competing against Amazon in the SERPs. Amazon does a great job of leveraging micro-data. Here's the rub... Amazon is ranking for product level pages and my client is ranking for category level pages. How can my client leverage micro-data to 'compete'?

Image Links Vs. Text Links, Questions About PR & Anchor Text Value
I am searching for testing results to find out the value of text links versus image links with alt text. Do any of you have testing results that can answer or discuss these questions? If 2 separate pages on the same domain were to have the same Page Authority, same amount of internal and external links and virtually carry the same strength and the location of the image or text link is in the same spot on both pages, in the middle of the body within paragraphs. Would an image link with alt text pass the same amount of Page Authority and PR as a text link? Would an image link with alt text pass the same amount of textual value as a text link? For example, if the alt text on the image on one page said "nike shoes" and the text link on the other page said "nike shoes" would both pass the same value to drive up the rankings of the page for "nike shoes"? Would a link wrapped around an image and text phrase be better than creating 2 links, one around the image and one around the text pointing to the same page? The following questions have to do with when you have an image and text link on a page right next to each other, like when you link a compelling graphic image to a category page and then list a text link underneath it to pass text link value to the linked-to page. If the image link displays before the text link pointing to a page, would first link priority use the alt text and not even apply the anchor text phrase to the linked page? Would it be best to link the image and text phrase together pointing to the product page to decrease the link count on the page, thus allowing for more page rank and page authority to pass to other pages that are being linked to on the page? And would this also pass anchor text value to the link-to page since the link would include an image and text? I know that the questions sound a bit repetitive, so please let me know if you need any further clarification. I'd like to solve these to further look into ways to improve some user experience aspects while optimizing the link strength on each page at the same time. Thanks!
