Google Analytics Numbers Are Weird
-
Hi,
I'm having a strange problem from past one month. My website gets about 10k pageviews a month with an average bounce rate of 50%. Lately, I observed a strange thing. The avg time on page of visitors from selected countries is less than 1 second and the bounce rate is zero!! How is this possible? This is happening from past one month and it would be really helpful if you guys could tell me what exactly is happening??
Ive attached a screenshot for better understanding.

Imagine you have a website and are using Google Analytics to track how many people visit it. Google Analytics does many cool things to give you insights into your website traffic, like showing you how many visitors you've had, where they came from, and what they did on your site.
But sometimes, the numbers can be a bit puzzling. Here are a few reasons why:
Real-Time vs. Standard Reporting: Google Analytics has a real-time reporting feature showing your site's events. This can be exciting to watch, but it may not always match up exactly with the standard reporting numbers, which show data over a more extended period. So, don't be surprised if the real-time numbers fluctuate a bit.
Data Sampling: When you have a lot of data (like millions of website visitors), Google Analytics might use "data sampling" to speed up the reporting process. This means it takes a sample of your data and makes estimates based on that sample. While this can be accurate most of the time, it's essential to know that it's not always 100% precise.
Bot Traffic: Not all the traffic to your website comes from real people. Bots and crawlers from search engines or other sources can also visit your site, and Google Analytics may count these visits, too. This can sometimes inflate your visitor numbers, making them seem higher than they are.
Filtering and Segmentation: Google Analytics allows you to filter and segment your data differently to get more specific insights. For example, you can look at traffic from a particular country or users using a specific device. Depending on how you set these filters, your numbers can vary.
Cookies and Privacy: Google Analytics uses cookies to track user behavior, but not everyone allows or has them enabled. This means that some visitors may not be fully counted in your analytics data, leading to discrepancies in the numbers.
In summary, Google Analytics is a powerful tool for understanding your website's performance, but it's essential to interpret the numbers with context. Factors like real-time reporting, data sampling, bot traffic, filtering, and cookie settings can all influence the numbers you see. These will help you make more informed decisions based on your analytics data.

Let us know what happens please.

Installation of the tracking code twice might be the problem. Because, we had the GA tracking code on the website, and also the Universal GA tag on GTM. I have taken down the tag on GTM, let us see what happens.
-
Often when the bounce rate is zero, it means your tracking code has been installed more than once. Check that. Also check to see if you're using both Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager on pages. If you are, make sure tag manager is tracking events and not pages which could lead to the same outcome (bounce rate = 0).

Hey Donna,
Nope, we do not use any call tracking service on the website. Is there any other explanation?
Thanks.
-
Agree that when the user has not viewed multiple pages, the avg time will be **zero ** and the bounce rate 100%. However, in my case, the bounce rate for the pages with almost 0 seconds time on page is **0.00%!!! (please see the attached image in the question). **So that means a user is going to another page before 1 second??? How do you explain this??
-
That's likely easy to explain: if the user doesn't do the second pageview or you don't fire another event through event tracking with Google Analytics they have no way of knowing how long the user has stayed on the page or if the user has stayed on the site for a bit viewing multiple pages. In that case, the time on page is 0 second and the bounce rate 100%. That is what you seem to be experiencing here.
-
Are you using a call tracking service? Sometimes they log events in your Google Analytics account, events with no associated page views.

How to change domains in Google Analytics without losing the data
Hi there, We recently changed our domain from .COM to .NET so that all our subdomains from external pages matched. Right now in Google Console we have our new .NET website being tracked, but in GA we are still tracking .COM. It is also causing issues with MOZ crawling our site because of the .COM/.NET discrepancy. My question is what is the best way to change our Google Analytics from .COM to .NET without losing historical data and what considerations do we need to change before implementing this? Our team was concerned that just downloading the old data would be too vast and it we wouldn't be able to continue manipulating it dynamically in GA. Thanks!!

Will changing the property from http to https in Google Analytics affect main unfiltered view?
I set my client up with an unfiltered view in Google Analytics. This is the one with historical data going back for years, so I don't want to do anything that will affect this view. Recently, the website moved from HTTP to HTTPS. There's a setting for the property that will allow me to change the property name to https://EXAMPLE.com and change the default URL to https://EXAMPLE.com. Questions: 1. If I change the property name and the default URL, will this somehow affect my unfiltered view in a way that I'll lose historical data or data moving forward? 2. I have heard that changing the default URL to HTTPS will help me avoid a common problem others have experienced (where they lose the referrer in Google Analytics and a bunch of their sessions go to direct / other). Is this true?

Google Analytics to sub domains
Hi, I have a site xyz.com and two separate sites on sub domains xyz.com/abc and xyz.com/def. What's the best way to go about with GA such that I can get all the data in the same place. Should I use the GA code for xyz.com on sub domains as well? Or should I create separate profiles?

Google Analytics, new property or views?
Hi All We have an existing Google analytics account which was customised relatively heavily a few years back, with custom variables, e-commerce tracking and the a large number of filters. We have determined that the custom variables and e-commerce tracking, at least for now, are no longer required and actually complicating our lives. We want to simplify the account and add a fresh set of goals and events. Our initial train of thought was to create an entire new property with the usual views, raw, test, main etc. We are proposing to retain both properties (6 months) so we can still do some comparative stuff. We're now wondering if we should retain the existing property and just create new views, the downside being that whilst we can compare data with previous periods it's meaningless to some degree as the filters etc are different. The plus of more views is that we're not firing the tag twice retaining two properties. Views and opinions welcome. Thanks

Google Analytics: Different stats for date range vs single month?
I've been scratching my head, chin, and you name it over this one. I have an advanced segment to remove bot traffic from my data. When I look at the Audience Overview data for a single month (let's say Aug). I am shown a session count. No problems here, however If I set the date range to (January - August). The august monthly stats is incorrect, much lower. What this means is that, if I export a CSV report from Jan-Aug, the data is wrong compared to individually recording a month. Anyone faced this? I've asked the question over at the Google Analytics technical section as well, but no answer P.S I even used the 'control the number of sessions used to calculate this report' tool but no luck.

Switching Google Analytics from Urchin to GA
I want to finally make the switch from Urchin to GA in Analytics, but the Google support page is no longer working (I realize I'm late to this so they likely took it down/moved it to where I can't find it). I've been searching on Google but can't find a straightforward guide to changing that won't disrupt my data. Anyone have a link to a working guide, or can you provide some guidance?

Track image searches on google analytics
How can i track image searches on google analytics? To filter the refferers by image.google or /imgres does not work in new google analytics (and brings an impossibly small number on old GA). also, this would not cover local google image refferers, that don't come from image.google.com. anyone knows how to find image search sources? i haven't found anything helpful in google's documentation or forums. thanks!

Conflicting Analytics: Getclicky vs. Google Analytics
Removal of an old getclicky code (and installation of new tracking code) from my site after some changes resolved inaccuracies in my page view/bounce rate information. Prior to adding the correct getclicky code, getclicky was showing 95% plus bounce rate on my site. I knew this was wrong because GA showed around 40%. Ironically, now that my getclicky account is working (showing a 30% bounce rate), GA bounce rate is steadily climbing. Is it best to just stick with one analytics account so that the codes don't conflict? Is it possible to have two accurate analytics accounts at the same time?
