Retina Sites

What's the best way to make a site retina ready? Just code one site with retina resolution graphics or rather serve up two different sets of graphics depending on what comp is being used on the other end?
Thanks in advance. I appreciate the input.

Hi Stephan,
Before you spend _too _long on this, I'd make sure it's the best use of your time - regular images do work on retina displays and so you may have higher priorities.
In many ways (simplicity, maintainability, design) the best route is to use retina-ready images throughout your site and serve them up to non-retina users as well. This typically results in better images for all and doesn't have to impact filesize too much (see this article about compressing larger images).
The downside is that for certain kinds of images, the larger image will still have a much larger filesize and this can be a major speed issue - especially for those on mobile connections.
Unless you have evidence that one or other effect (fuzzy images on retina or slow loading) is causing you problems, I would personally take an "if it ain't broke" approach. The complexity of maintaining two sets of images is a step too far for most websites in my opinion and I would tend to stick with regular images up until the point where high resolution displays are significant among your users and plan to switch to high-resolution images for all at that point.
I hope that helps.

How much is the site architecture impacting my site?
Hi there, I'm interested to learn how much the site archecture of griffith.ie (higher education) maybe impacting our rankings. In recent months there was some changes to the the faculty landing pages but not to the site archecture. The rankings in the last 6 months have dipped a little. There are two main path ways to get to the course. 1. Course finder - https://www.griffith.ie**/find-a-course** => 2. Faculties - https://www.griffith.ie**/faculties** Most of the SEO authority is coming through the Faculties pages as this is where all the courses are found in term of the url structure. For example; https://www.griffith.ie**/faculties/**business/courses/ba-hons-accounting-finance The UX on the site tells a different story and directs people to the course finder. /find-a-course Ideally, I feel the site would benefit much more if all the traffic was directed through the course finder however this would require (I think) a big redevelopment of the search tool and I feel we are diluting our efforts as when somebody arrives to the site through the homepage they go through the course finder and if they come through specific searches they get taken to the specific course page under the faculty section. the site has has this archecture for the best part of 4 years and I'm considering recommend a change if it would greatly improve SEO and UX. Any feedback on this would be great. Many Thanks Rob

Specifying image dimensions for site speed vs. responsive
I'm working on improving site speed from an SEO perspective, and one bit of advice I see often is to specify the dimensions of the images you're using so the browser knows the size of the image it needs to download. However, I am wondering what impact this may have if the site is responsive? If you specify the large dimensions suited for a desktop browser, would you be forcing a mobile browser to use that sized image? Has anyone seen dramatic improvements in site speed using the <picture>tag for responsive images?</picture> Thanks! Jannette

Is having a site map page necessary?
Hello all! So I know having a sitemap XML file is important to include in your robots.txt file. I also know it is important to submit your XML sitemap to Google and Bing. However, I am wondering if it is beneficial for your site's SEO value to have a sitemap page displayed on your website? Or is this just a redundant action if you have already done the above two actions with your XML sitemap? Thanks in advance!

Wordpress Site Structure and H1 Tags
We are working on optimizing a client's website and asked the client's webmaster to change a handful of H1 tags. The webmaster said they could not do to the existing names being pre-set in the design. The website is built in Wordpress. The client has repeating H1 tags due to the 'design'. I have attached a snapshot of the backend. Is there a rule around Wordpress site structure where this doesn't happen? Is it worth changing? If so,what is the best solution. Thank you ahead of time. ylAMvNg.jpg

Question About Site Redesign and Nav / Page Structure
Hey guys, i am currently redesigning our company's site, and have come across some things that I'm not quite sure of. We used to have individual service pages in our main navigation (design, video, marketing) before the redesign. In this new design, i had the idea of making just one "services" or "capabilities" page, where these three services would each be outlined, and each service would have a list of links to more specific landing pages. Obviously, breaking it up correctly with HTML5 using the andtags. What I'm wondering is that if i'm going to be penalized for having those three services that aren't necessarily related too closely on the same page as opposed to having the one page for each service (like we have now). Any help would be greatly appreciated, and let me know if i need to elaborate more. Thanks in advance!

Buying mutliple keyword rich domain names and directing them to one site
I've noticed some folks buying keyword rich domain names and pointing them to one site to try to rank for those keywords. An example of this is a plumbing business that buys domains like austinplumber.com, localaustinplumbingservice.com, bestplumberinaustin.com and then pointing these domains to their main website. Does this help the site rank for these key phrases? How does google see this? Thanks mozzers! Ron
