How to recover search volume after domain name change?
-
On the 3rd of November we changed our company name and domain.
The new site was not changed at all so the 301 process was quite straightforward.
The change over was successful, no downtime, all pages redirected correctly (with a few minor exceptions).
However, after a few days we started to see more and more links into the new site from the old site. They now stand at over 3 million. And links from the new site to the old site of over 200K.
Links from the new site back to the old, were due to us having left a lot of links tucked away on various pages which were possibly causing loops with the 301 redirects on the old site. We fixed these and now there are no remaining links back to the old site, though we are still showing just over 200K links back to the old site.
We are also seeing a LOT more back-links on the new site from old junk sites, which are not showing for the old site.
A couple of years ago we went through about a year of trying to track down and remove thousands of spam backlinks. We did what we could, got a lot removed, showed Google the evidence, then Google lifted the penalty and said they had made some changes that meant the links were no longer causing the penalty.
I added the old disavow file to the new site, but it doesn't cover a fraction of the sites which are being displayed as providing backlinks... many of which are clearly spammy.
Is it possible that Google made some manual actions to lift the penalties but failed to associate these changes with the new domain? Changes that were not included in the disavow file?
All help appreciated.

I think you need to wait a little bit. The decrease in traffic could just be because of the 301 redirects that are looping around. Don't make to many changes at one time. Once the 301 redirects settle, the links from your old site should start to drop. You are telling Google that the site has moved, and if the back links aren't connected to the new domain, aside from the 301, they will start to fall off naturally.
A disavow action at this point would hurt more than help. Just be patient and give it a couple of weeks.

We found when we did a disavow that it took ages to get the links removed from many years ago, but what we found is that it gave a big red flag to Google and we got hit hard both SERPs and traffic.
Took ages to come back from it. I would only recommend doing a disavow if Google sends an un natural link message via Google Webmasters Tools.

If the disavow file was copied across then I would have thought that would be ok as you weren't moving to escape a penalty for instance.
We changed our domain back in March and at the end of November there were still thousands of pages listed for the old domain so it looked like Google hadn't picked up the change. Once we had the option to try again with changing the domain in Google Webmaster tools which appeared a week or so ago, we resubmitted the change request and finally the number of pages from the old domain indexed is starting to fall
We also have links from our old domain to new one in the backlink profile but I thought this might just be due to link tools taking a while to pick up on the change.
One thing we did try when we had a load of spammy links pointing to the domain was to use the htaccess file and send these rubbish links off to a no follow, no index domain rather than have them pointing into the main site.

Using one domain for email and another domain for your website, but redirects...
Hello - We are rebranding and our new name is fairly lengthy. We own all main domain versions of our brand name - .com, .new and .org - There is a very high search volume for the new brand name as it is a merger of 2 popular existing brands so want to take advantage of that and use our full name within our website domain name. However, since the name is a little long as mentioned - 25 characters - we also own the 3 character acronym of the new brand so we are debating on using the acronym for our new email addresses. ie [email protected] so it is user friendly. We would obviously redirect the acronym email domain to point to the longer website domain. Are there any negative SEO effects if we do that? Use the longer domain for the website and shorter acronym for our email? Thank you

Same URL names in one domain
Hi All, I have 9 different subdirectories for languages in the same domain example: www.example.com/page.html www.example.com/uk/page-uk.html www.example.com/es/page-es.html we are implementing hreflang tags for the languages. I know it is better to translate URLs, but we won't for now, because all the NON-ASCII characters. But we are thinking to get rid of the dashes on the languages URL: -uk or -es, so it will be: www.example.com/page.html www.example.com/uk/page.html www.example.com/es/page.hrml would this be a problem? to have same page names even if they are in different subdirectories? would we need to add canonical tags, at least for the main domain URLs? www.example.com/page.html Thank you, Rachel

Changing Domains - 301 old https to new https
Brief History: Our company made change to a new domain. Both domains had an SSL configured on it in which the old domain SSL was controlled and created by Shopify which gave us limited control. Because we couldn't redirect the old https:// to the new https:// So basically we duplicated our new HTML website and put canonical ref on all duplicate pages to the final domain to help get search to navigate to the newer domain. Question: In the near future I would like to take down the old domain and do a 301 domain forwarding. What is the correct course of action to complete this? Our old domain was indexed and SERP results were tied to it's https:// url's.

Keyword in Domain Name
Hello! My website is www.enchantingquotes.com. I also own the domain www.enchantingwallquotes.com,which forwards to my site. About 90% of my business comes from the keyword "wall quotes". Should I consider changing switching to the enchantingwallquotes.com domain and redirecting? And if I do, do I need to recreate the entire website or is there an easier way that I am overlooking? Thank you for any advise/insight!

Domain Registrar
Looking for opinions on some good domain registrars since I have decided to transfer from Godaddy. A question while I'm here discussing the topic. Does the reputation of a Domain Registrar affect SEO in any form?

How can you get accurate search traffic volumes?
I have been trying to get accurate search volumes for the search term "how to dance" in the UK. The results seems to vary wildly. Please could someone tell me how many people actually search for this term each month in the UK on Google (or any other search engine for that matter!)? Thank you!

How to force a trailing slash after the domain name
My campaign analysis is predictably listing domain.com and domain.com/ as repeated content. I've searched and searched but cannot find a way to force a trailing slash on the end of the domain name unless there's a file or directory after it.. Is there a way to accomplish this using .htaccess

Site wide search v catalogue search
I have a client building a new web site who has agreed that a site search function is a good thing in order to get a view on how customers are using the site, the search terms they are using as a source of keywords etc. The problem is the developer has implemented a catalogue/product search which only queries the products in the database. On the one hand this is fine in that the search is directing users to products and not to other areas of the site. But the customer is disappointed that the search is not site wide. Are there any solutions where third party search utility could be implemented whithin the site which will search both? The ecommerce platform is Magento. Any views would be very helpful!
