Who should I reach out to for external links?

As a web designer, who should I reach out to for external links, other than former clients?
-
Have you considered contributing your expertise to existing sites? We've all heard that "guest posting is dead", but my site, for one, still commissions and publishes (and pays for!) articles by knowledgeable people in our niche. Find a few high-authority sites, send them a good pitch for a post you could write for them, and generally become active in your community.

I would look at what sites are out there which are placed as industry authorities. I would also look to identify who the influencers are in relation to your niche and I would look at starting to interact with all of these on social media. I would comment on what they are doing and get involved (followerwonk is a good tool for identifying these on Twitter as you can search for key terms such as web design). That way you will build a relationship up, then I would look at creating some decent content that people want to share. Some how to guides in relation to what you design in for instance. You could look for common problems or mistakes and then create a simple post on the solution. Then you need to make sure you spend time pushing it - push it to the influencers you have built a relationship with, push it to relevant groups. One tip I would give is look at getting involved with and sharing your content on large Google Plus communities, this will help with your exposure. Following through with this process will take time but you will benefit from earning links, social shares and more traffic.
One other tip that I would like to give you which will help is this - if you struggle for what to write about but you have competitors doing a good job at it then run them through socialcrawlytics.com and have a look at the content they have which has the largest number of shares. This will give you a good base for creating your own unique content based around a specific area that you know has been well received.
Essentially there is a lot to go at in order to earn links and earn is the key word. Spend time building your own profile and relationships up and then place you content in front of these connections. You will find this will lead to links and more.
I would also look at building my profile up by trying to get content placed on other sites such as well known web design resources as this will lead to you being recognised as an expert in your niche. Then you can further leverage this to help earn links,
Hope this helps - if there are any specifics don't hesitate to ask...

This is my first post on the community here but as a web designer, there are definitely way more resources than just the portfolio of clients. Try other networks/community, such as Behance, Dribbble and showcase your work. Try blogs that talk about web design (there are plenty out there).
It's okay to start with your client base but if the content is great and it's posted on communities, you'll definitely get picked off by larger sites with more authority.
I'd also suggest forums, there is a lot of critique requests over there, dofollow links, if you're genuine, you'll get the feedback you need + a backlink.
Hope this helps,
Sergiu

Does This Link Have Value?
Hi Mozzers, A client paid to publish a white paper, thinking that the link to the web site is beneficial. The link does redirect back to the web site, but is in a format that I've never seen: http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001YdyyLrzOQJxM87SJZkJYVbQKSdCmFpwqg1fuX3yqVqpGboUjdSaHv9IdW5HsQpgmvwOrg5N4T3DNHYV8e1UVe_YCua_XQCFykoSJvu1HzDyb-3x-aFcPU-ER-vwWxq4- Does this link have any value?

How much time does it take for the links to be forwarded to redirected link?
Hi there,
Link Building | | MoeezLodhi
Thank you for taking out some time for this question; I have changed the permalinks last week for a website.. I forgot to redirect old permalinks to the new one.. So I did 301 redirection, it has been 4-5 days since I did that but the links are not forwarded to the new Permalink so far.
How much time should I wait for the links to be forwarded to the new permalinks? Secondly, I am sure I have done the 301 redirect correctly, as when I go to the old url / permalink it directs me to the new permalink. So I am sure 301 is done correctly. Do I need to submit the sitemap again?0 -
Linking Etiquette
Hi Moz Community, Long time lurker, first time poster. I work for a real estate firm and have recently done some link analysis. I'm noticing that my company is not getting linked to as frequently as we should be. Several news outlets (including NYT & Bloomberg) have cited our reports, interviews with employees and other original content belonging to my company without linking back to our site (although they do mention us). Some publications are even linking back to our competitors for similar content but not ours. Is it appropriate to reach out and ask for links from these outlets after they've been published? Does anybody have tips on making others aware we want links shared for future articles? Thanks in advance!

Getting Links
Hi, Links from Directories are bad. Links for low quality sites are bad. Paid links are bad. Guest blogging is "maybe rumor has it" google's next big Penguin. Where and how is everybody getting all these great links from, is there anywhere left?? All advice welcomed as we really need good links quick! Thanks

Editorial links
http://www.wired.com/culture/lifestyle/news/1999/01/17484 how do you get a link from an article like this where the author writes for a high domain authority site and just ends up listing a lot of links to different companies?

"gimme links" = easy to fill out profile/personal reputation links that offer a do-follow anchor text flexible link
I'm doing some SEO for small niche service sites...and aside from niche directories and some light article marketing and local search directories (yelp, etc) there really isn't a budget for content generation. I really only have a budget for profile/submission links. What are some sites where you can quite easily fill out a personal profile with an anchor text variable link that may not be THAT juicy but will stick (i.e. not a spam/fake profile type of link, but something like Linkedin). I'll start with giving away 1 www.istockphoto.com Any others that aren't obvious?

How long until links kick in?
Hey, We just got a bunch of great links on sites like TechCrunch and similar, but our SERP rankings and related remained unaffected. How long does it generally take for such links to "kick in" and help the website?

Google not providing all competitor site's external incoming links?
I heard Google is not providing all of a competitor's site's external links, speculated as protecting their privacy. But that Yaho still provides the complete list of their recognized links. (I assume they mean when using the term 'link:url') Has anyone else heard this claim? Is there a way around this check? What sources do you use at SEOMoz for your Pro reports? thanks, geo
