Google Penalty for strong industry link?
-
I work as the SEO manager for a company and we recently launched a new site. Along with this I've been doing some intensive SEO over the past 30 days in getting partners to add or change links and had a big impact on our main keyword, document management software. For the past 2 weeks we've been at position 6 but today I noticed that we dropped down to 11th. I'm wondering if I'm getting penalized for too many exact anchor matches because we recently have been featured on an industry site, cmsreport.com with good anchor text and suddenly we have dropped. Is Google penalizing me for this? If so it seems odd that with legitimate PR and posts I get penalized.

My rankings dropped as well, although we got a relevant link from bbc (linked with only the url)... I didn't see any positive impact on that yet.

I can't offer a direct explanation for your recent ranking drop. I would not suspect a penalty. It is a common practice for articles to be published or PR announcements to occur, then for this content to be picked up and duplicated. I disagree with the idea of changing your latest release to adjust for a penalty that may not exist.
You shared you have been recently performing a lot of SEO work. The changes you made kick up a lot of dust with respect to Google. They index the web in chunks so it may take a bit of time for the dust to settle. If the changes you made were improvements I would expect your ranking to be restored without any further action. I hate to offer a "wait and see" response but often that is the best approach.
Whenever someone asks "why did my rankings drop" I look at their site and the first thing I ask myself is "does this site deserve to be on the first page of Google results for a competitive term?" It's a lion fight. If you want to be the best then all stops need to be pulled out and an intense focus is required on every last component of the site. This is my approach and others may disagree.
I noticed opportunities for improvement on your site. Below are a few I noticed immediately but there are probably others.
-
your image names should be changed to include more accurate descriptions that perhaps include keywords. For example one image is named "Homepage42.jpg". It seems most images follow this naming convention.
-
some images are missing alt text, such as the one mentioned above. The couple images I did see with alt text show "document management software". I would suggest caution here. Using that phrase in alt text once should be fine but make sure the alt tag describes the image and gently includes keywords otherwise it may appear as stuffing.
-
The current page title is "Document Management Software for a Paperless Office | Docstar". Possibly consider shortening it to "Document Management Software | Docstar". This is a judgment call but it would give more weight to your primary keyword phrase and you can include additional details in your meta description.

The site uses 7 H1 tags. For most sites I would say this is too many. Your site looks very nice and makes it work with the header images rotating. I would suggest changing the tags outside the header to H2 tags out of concern that Google may not like that many H1 tags. A side suggestion would be to slow down the header image rotation. It is so fast that a reader cannot possibly even read the header, not to mention the other text. I realize the rotation can be stopped by selecting the appropriate tab in the menu bar but users may not understand how that works.

A couple non-SEO suggestions. Add a favicon. Your gold star would work well. Also remove the "Page optimized by WP Minify plugin" footer. These changes will slightly add to the professional appearance of your page in my opinion.

I absolutely agree with you as far in that some of the best sites have few to no exact anchor matches, I'm just surprised that with a featured press release on a very related site that Google dropped my ranking. Given your advice I switched my latest release and will see if the Google oracle likes me again

Nobody can say for sure... but if I look at the anchor text of the links for sites that are powerful but do zero linkbuilding they have almost no matching anchor text and a ton of links with domain.com as anchor.
I am not disputing the value of keyword anchor text... but just saying that domain.com anchor text might be better than you think with the words in nearby sentences delivering the goods. .

Link from a directory
Hi, im submitting a clients website to some directories. They are a dental practice and I'm adding them to this website http://goo.gl/Tvyabd Once i added the business to its directory it asked me to add a link (in so many words) back to its website from my clients website. Is this ok to do or is it seen as spam? Im confused about this as sometimes directories are free and sometimes they ask for a fee for it to be fast tracked to put it on the website. I always check the Domain authority of the websites and make sure they are relevant to the industry that I'm working in but again not sure if this would be seen as "paying" for links. Thanks Ade

What is the importance of root domains linking to your website in Google's rankings? I notice our competition has a much higher number on keywords I'm analyzing. Thank you!
I've noticed our competition has a much higher number of "root domains" linking to their page than we do. Is this simply a result of more websites linking to them? How long does it normally take to build up these numbers/rankings? (I'm assuming it's a concerted effort, which I'll be researching.) Thank you!

Getting a sitewide links from one domain as oppsed to few links from certain pages, a good, bad or horrible idea?
Hello, I have a website that is performing really well in Google for country specific Real Estate Website. I have had this site for just about 2 years and I have 4600+ indexed pages, and about 50 of my main keywords appear in top 10 results on Google. I have now started a second site with a brand new domain, its only about 2 months old. This one is a Travel website and again its country specific (same country that real estate website is performing well in) and since its still building up the content and has barely a couple of backlinks, I am thinking of adding a linkback to it from my Real Estate Site. Is it a good idea to add a site wide link back from header section of the real estate website to my travel website? Both sites has same country and most of the keywords in both relate to this country. Or will I be better off adding a few text links from few pages with best Page Authority? Or - do you suggest that I do not link the two at all? Both sites are hosted on different servers, with different IP's and one is on windows server created in asp.net while another is a magento site. Any advidce / insight will be much appreciated and thank you in advance.

Greetings! Actually, got an doubt on linking to external site. The thing, i have working for roof marketers site. They have covered roof products. Each of the products have a page along with major keyword. Actually, i do link from other pages[internally]. Can i just past RAW link like [http://www.thirdpartysite.com] or what do i do. But my client wants that link to be in content area. Recently recovered from Link Spam Penalty
Our ecommerce site recovered from a manual link spam penalty about a month ago, but the organic traffic is still very low. We are working on getting high quality links and high quality content for our site. Some people are saying that even if you recover from the penalty and build high quality links, etc.. the site will never recover. Is this true?, we are very discouraged by what others are telling us. ? I d appreciate any help or suggestion we can get here. Thank you.

Why does my site only have 4 internal followed links/internal links?
When using Open Site Explorer my site is winning in many categories but lacking in others as compared to competitors. I intend to improve on this but am a little confused by the extremely low number of "internal followed links" and "internal links" at just 4. My competitors have much more than that. Does this mean links to the root domain? Total internal links? I have many internal links so I'm having a hard time figuring this one out. What four internal links are getting noticed? I just went through and changed all the links that went to index.html to link to the root domain at www.njlimocarservice.com as I just found a Q&A that indicates this was better. So as of Wed at 5:45 PM all my links to the homepage went to index.html and not the root which is no longer the case. Not sure if this matters. At the same time I also just put a 301 from index.html to redirect to www.njlimocarservice.com. Any help appreciated! h9QuF.png

Free link on a Paid Link Blog
Hi there, I have been doing some outreaching, and managed to have a blog post accepted on a authority blog. They included links to my website, and I was very pleased with the placement. However, having browsed through the site, I was worried to see that they openly admit they allow 'reviews' of websites, with backlinks included, for $50 per review. I am worried I might be penalised without actually doing anything wrong. I did not pay for my link, but the link has been placed on a site which openly admits they accept payment for links. Should I be worried? Should I ask them to take it down? To date I have been told countless times by bloggers I am outreaching that if I pay $10, $50, $100 etc I can write a blog post. I have never accepted because of the risk of penalization. Now, unwittingly, I am linked to from a paid link site with a blog post that would look like I have paid for it because of the placement and style of back link. What do you think? Thanks,
