How to choose keywords for a small, local business
-
I have a client who is a small, local business that isn't interested in competing outside of their market. Let's use a Toyota dealership in Anytown USA as an example.
Which method makes more sense?
A: Optimize for keywords like "toyota", "used cars", etc. and hope the search engines show the site to local users?
Or B: Optimize for keywords like "toyota anytown" and "used cars anytown" and take localization out of the equation?
Kind of a newbie trying to figure out how best to approach SEO for sites that are highly geographic.

We have had some experience recently with just this task. First I would make sure that our on site optimization is correct for local search therefore title tags should be appropriate eg Toyota Car Sales and Service. Also that there is relevant on page local content and also that your meta descriptions have local context.
Second, I would follow Rand's direction to getlisted.org which will get you on 5 of the most important local directories, qype, yelp etc. Follow this with any other local directories you can find. These all help with local search rankings.
Third build links with local businesses. These local backlinks will help Google localise you and determine that your car dealership is the 'most popular' in anytown.
Fourth Google Places Signup will hopefully mean you will appear google place search
Apart from this general link acquisition will help boulster your position.

Go with Option B. Optimizing for "toyota" or "used cars" is going to be super competitive and most of the people performing those searches aren't likely to be relevant to a brick and mortar location. Targeting the more specific phrases will be easier to rank and the traffic the site gets will be more likely to convert. Keyword selection requires that balance of search volume and specificity. "toyota anytown", "used cars anytown", and "Used toyotas anytown" should be a good place to start.
And if you haven't already, you'll want to get the business listed in Google Places.

Hi
Anytime you have a "brick and mortar" situation you're dealing with local search, which is a different ballgame for sure than non-local. You may want to have a look at:
http://www.davidmihm.com/local-search-ranking-factors.shtml
http://www.seomoz.org/webinars/conversion-optimization-for-local-businesses - that deals a little more on the conversion end, rather than rankings, but still of value.
http://www.seomoz.org/blog/category/5 - and the blog category for the local seo verticle. The top 4 or 5 posts there right now have some value.
Definitely where you want to start is to get an overview of local search.
Also, the latest SEO101 podcast on webmaster radio JUST had an entire episode on local.
Hope these help!

Optimizing for phrases like "Toyota Dealer" Will allow you to still show up for those searches, but I've experienced the best benefit at my car dealership by optimizing for "City Toyota" and "Toyota City". I then followed that up by using "City car dealership" and "City used cars." However, I have over 100 domain links to my website, so It's easy for me to rank well in local search.

Tag usage based on Google keywords
We are making a site that will be a database of publicity stunts. We used the Google Keyword tool to find a bunch of words related to this. The term itself has similar keywords such as [pr campaigns]. And also there are some derivative keywords as [bad publicity stunts], [famous publicity stunts], [celebrity publicity stunts]. Each bringing in 20-50 monthly searches for the exact term. Some concepts appear slightly differently such as [famous pr stunts] and [famous pr campaigns]. We'd love our pages to appear on as much of these keyword searches as possible (overall we expect about 3k-4k searches /month on exact matching). And we're planning to use these keywords as a our taxonomy for our post tags. That way the keyword appears in each stunt page AND there is a page for each type of publicity stunt. As a general policy, what would be the best way to write our tags?

How to interpret the keyword tool?
I've played with the keyword tool a bit. Some keywords have 43% difficulty and some have 55%. What do these difficulty levels mean? I don't really know how to go about it.

How do you order similar keywords when writing content?
Let's say I sell widgets: plastic widgets, paper widgets, brass widgets and steel widgets. These are in order by how popular they are but none is so popular to really stand on it's own. When writing general content about widgets, lets say for the main Widgets page, would you write: 1. "We sell plastic, paper, brass and steel widgets." -or- 2. "We sell plastic widgets, paper widgets, brass widgets and steel widgets." I understand I can have specific pages for Plastic Widgets, Paper Widgets, etc., but like I said this would be for a main category page, maybe even for a quick "this is what we do" opening paragraph on the homepage. Is it better to be concise like in example 1? Or to individually call out each type like in example 2? I'm looking for SEO insight and the customer experience viewpoint as well.

How do I know I have chosen the right keywords?
Hey everyone, I have been working in business dev for just over 3 years in seo/sem. Needless to say I was hooked right away and I think I am finally ready to start something on my own. I have started some work for a client who does not want to spend lot of money(what else is new). They manufacture watches and handbags and have over 2 hundred retailers across Canada. They currently have no online presence with with the site they have now.On top of that they have decided they want to start selling their products online. Also they want to target retailers as well as the general public. So I started thinking how can I use keyword phrase that would attract both retailers and end users I thought a good keyword phrase "buy stylish cheap watches and handbags online in Canada" that has a lot of opportunity because it has several keywords in the phrase, and can be broken down to target several 3 word key phrases. I have checked out Google's Keyword Suggest as well as WordTracker, and found that the phrase as a whole has very little traffic value. However there is tons of traffic when broken up.An example would be. Buy stylish watches online, buy affordable watches online and so on and so on. How do I know If I have chosen the right keywords if my client doesn't have the funds to test them all using PPC? This is my first client and I really don't want to mess this up.They are really good people and I would like to do right by them. Can anyone give me some advice. Great know my keyboard wont let me put in a question mark lol, thankfully its the weekend.
