I actually did this before I ask the question for one of the directory "child care in Singapore", recently according to data given by moz, the ranking moves up. Of course, I also comment on those related blogs.

Yes, while gaining links by commenting on related blog articles may improve your rankings, they are still just low quality links. Depending on who you are up against in the SERP's and the competitiveness of the keyword you are targeting, this method may or may not move the needle. If this method is working in your scenario, I would be willing to bet that your competition must also have low quality links pointing to their site. Or very few links.
If you want high quality links you just have to dig deep, research and create valuable, high-quality content on your site that your target audience will find valuable. Share it, do outreach and make sure it can be found! Though these type of backlinks are harder to achieve, when you get them they are worth more than a hundred blog comments. At least in my experience this has proven true.
Wouldn't it be nice if we had a spam-free internet to browse and find reputable sources for all of our search queries? Sadly that just isn't the case today. But we can dream, can't we! LOL

I would stay away from this approach! Super spammy. Like David mentioned above, leave comments to engage with the author about the article itself. There are far better ways to get valuable links these days.

As others have mentioned, simply commenting on a blog post does not directly help SEO and if done for the sole purpose of dropping a link it is basically worthless spam.
Leaving a thoughtful, intelligent comment that furthers the conversation started in a post can be a great way to build a connection with the author. If you do this regularly on a site, your chances of securing a future link to your content can be significantly increased.

If you want to leave a legitimate blog comment to engage with the author and the community, go for it!
If you're only leaving blog comments to get links to "help your SEO" - don't do it.
It's spam and it won't help you at all.

Does anyone foresee any future guest blogging penalties coming from google if the guest blogs are high quality blogs? I'm wondering if a future google update is going to hit even more sites that have used guest blogging as guest blogging continues to grow. Blog Commenting, how to start?
Greetings Mozzers, I have read that interacting on blogs in a natural way is good for building relationships as well as earning links. This is what I'd like to do, however what is the best way to find blogs to start doing this for different industries? Google [industry blogs]? Go to competitors and look at their link profiles to see if there are blogs they are on? Whats a good way to start this method? All the advice/clarification would be outstanding!

Mozzes, We're running a real estate portal in which we have a pretty good news/blog section running on wordpress. It's placed into our LAMP site on a dash from our root URL: www.ourportal.com/news/ To attract traffic via our landing pages we publish article snippets from the blog, linked to the complete articles. several people have suggested that i try guest blogging as a way to improve my site's position but i am wondering how do i go about finding the right blogs to contribute to? for example, my clients are usually dentists. how do i know what would be a good blog to write to for that industry? also, how do i link back to the site, in the content or the signature?

Another guest blogging question (sorry people)
So I use myblogguest to find blogs to exchange content for links with. So a few things I need clearing up really, If you cant write relevant content to the website you want to push, does this mean writing content on something you know something about lets say football and putting anchor text links in the byline to a electronic shop would not work and is not worth doing? On the flip side lets say you get a copy writer to do it for you but the blogs wanting to use the content are not relevant to your website. So your articles about football and your website sells football equipment but the blogs wanting to use the content are general blogs with 20 categories covering everything. Cheers
