Internal anchor text
-
Designed my website with one keyword, one page adage. Wondering if i am creating an issue with internal anchor text and use of plurals for keywords. For instance, say I want my index page to rank for keyword exotic vacations, and an inner page to rank for exotic vacation. I do this as i notice there is a major discrepency with google when calling both the singular and plural term of certain keywords (like the example above, for instance). I see in yahoo it views singular and plural as essentially the same word, but google appears to rank them separately. Anyways since google is where the majority of my search traffic comes from, I separated my most competitive keywords for both singular and plural usage and created external links with anchor text that reflects this separation.
I am concerned though that I may not be handling the Internal anchor text properly. What i have done is take a keyword l want to rank for (for example "exotic vacations") and attach it a page (for example index page) and use the anchor text "exotic vacations" on this page and link it to the inner page "exotic vacation." Reason: I want to rank for the term exotic vacations on the main page, but have a relavant page to link to this term so the closest would be the keyword exotic vacation on an inner page.
I would appreciate any feedback on this. I think I am running into a problem with this strategy especially on the main index page/inner page keywords (plural to singular). I also notice google will find an inner page for a time then switch it to the default domain name index page when searchign for a keyword. Kinda keeps going back and forth. I never see any indent search results.

Hi Oxygenretreat,
Singulars and plurals should be treated the same, so your main page should be targeting both "exotic vacations" and "exotic vacation" because Google sees them as the same in most instances. As for internal linking, it doesn't hold near the weight with Google as it has in the past. My suggestion would be to make sure that your anchor text is related to the page and thats about it. If you have a page about exotic vacations make sure that the internal anchor text links to it with some form of exotic vacations and not some term like "home". Since internal anchor text is easily manipulated Google has reduced it's role in their ranking models over the past years.

yeah not asking about keyword research, above is an example. Asking about best practices internal anchor text with singular and plural keywords.

Changing your Anchor Text in 2014
Hello I have a series of question, There was a directory listing we submitted to and got approved. However we got 6 Links total with the same Anchor Text 3 from www and 3 from non www, which is also the Title of our Brand Name. However this is causing an unnatural link. 1. Does Changing the Anchor Text Bad? Does Google have a new way of detecting anchor text changes.
Technical SEO | | EVERWORLD.ENTERTAIMENT
2. Can I change the Title/Anchor to something more generic, so that the anchor text profile is more natural.
3. Since this is a Directory is http://obln.org/ - Does anybody know being on this directory bad?
Or should I just remove this links altogether or Disavow 5 Links and just keep one, because they have a PR5 and has trust flow, losing all the links may not be good as well for ranking. Thanks For your Insight.0 -

Can Silos and Exact Anchor Text In Links Hurt a Site Post Penguin?
Just got a client whose site dropped from a PR of 3 to zero. This happened shortly after the Penguin release, June, 2012. Examining the site, I couldn't find any significant duplicate content, and where I did find duplicate content (9%), a closer look revealed that the duplication was totally coincidental (common expressions). Looking deeper, I found no sign of purchased links or linking patterns that would hint at link schemes, no changes to site structure, no change of hosting environment or IP address. I also looked at other factors, too many to mention here, and found no evidence of black hat tactics or techniques. The site is structured in silos, "services", "about" and "blog". All page titles that fall under services are categorized (silo) under "services", all blog entries are categorized under "blogs", and all pages with company related information are categorized under "about". When exploring the site's links in Site Explorer (SE), I noticed that SE is identifying the "silo" section of links (i.e. services, about, blog, etc.) and labeling it as an anchor text. For example, domain.com/(services)/page-title, where the page title prefix (silo), "/services/", is labeled as an anchor text. The same is true for "blog" and "about". BTW, each silo has its own navigational menu appearing specifically for the content type it represents. Overall, though there's plenty of room for improvement, the site is structured logically. My question is, if Site Explorer is picking up the silo (services) and identifying it as an anchor text, is Google doing the same? That would mean that out of the 15 types of service offerings, all 15 links would show as having the same exact anchor text (services). Can this type of site structure (silo) hurt a website post Penguin?

A query about internal linking. Have I got this right?
Hi Guys I think this sounds like a right noobie question, but I am amongst friends so here goes. So our website is an ecommerce site selling magazines. There are certain magazines, for example Vogue, where we sell the UK version, USA, italian, spanish, french etc there's basically 13 different Vogue magazines on our site. The more niche ones attract some good long tail traffic. However, the UK version is competitive and so requires some extra umph to get us a half descent rank. However, when you search "vogue magazine subscription" for example, it's our italian vogue which is listed first. When I looked into this, I found that we had linked out from our UK Vogue to Italian vogue. Could this have given the italian vogue a marginal boost, as it had the additional internal links? What I have now done is add to some, not all, of the variations something along the lines "you will find the UK Vogue magazine here" where "UK Vogue Magazine" is the anchor text. Is this the right thing to do? Will this identify that the UK Vogue page is the higher priority page, or the more important page? I was also going to add to a category page a "Top 10 Womens magazines" section, and link to Vogue from there. Am I barking up the right tree? Thanks Guys Paul

Google Webmaster Tools reports 404s for plain text. Should I create those URLs and 301 them to actual pages?
IA few years back I noticed that Google Webmaster Tools returns 404s from regular text containing a URL, but no anchor tag. I came accross this again today. Is it worthwhile to create those URLs and 301 redirect them to proper pages.

Anchor text diversity
I understand that getting links to a site all with the same anchor text is probably not a good thing, but what is a good ratio of anchor text diversity? should about 60% of the links pointing to a page that i am trying to rank be the keyword i am trying to rank for? or is it more like 20%?

Online Marketing exec seeking internal SEO advice - Large org. Many verticals. Where to start?
Hello! I'm an Online Marketeer who's taking on some SEO responsibility internally (after months of researching - information overload) and will be working with an external agency. I'll get to the point here. The difficulty I have is in getting my head around approaching our SEO strategy. I have what I would class as a beginner-intermediate understand of SEO and the tools and techniques available for assistance (many great articles available on this forum and others). I feel that there are some real opportunities for our company that has already placed investment into SEO previously. The difficulty I have is working out how to approach the whole campaign. We are a recruitment consultancy with many many vertical markets, the sheer amount of keywords could be staggering. For some short insights we have a homepage PR 4, Alexa 338,361, PA 56, moz Rank 4.61. I've started by using the SEOmoz pro tool to identify problems with our sites optimisation and improve them. On reflection our site is doing OK, but we really need to show some significant results in search rankings, increases in traffic, and ultimately conversions. I'm a keen user of G-analytics and love the SEOmoz tool (a selection of the tools I will use to measure results). Are there any basic frameworks to devising a strategy that could help point me in the right direction? E.g. Keyword Research
