Website migration
-
hi,
I have to "refurbish" a website from scratch.
This domain is quite old (2004) and has got a good audience.
1/ Is there a tip or a tool to guess with witch kind of framework (cms) is it made from ? I mean drupal, joomla, ezpublish, wordpress ..as i can't see it from code source.
2/ Have you got any method to migrate the old database (seems to be iis with asp language) into a new one (i work with php mysql) ?
3/ In order not to loose rankings in Serp, is there a tool to list the main urls with best link juice ? I will then redirect them with a 301 redirection in an .htaccess file.
Many thanks..

If the current site is built on asp the credentials to access the database must be stored somewhere within the application. It would usually be in a .config file. There is a small chance that the connection details would be encrypted - but in the days of ASP this was the exception to the rule. If you can find these connection details you will be able to get at least a read only view of the database and export the data.
I find it strange that the owners of the site (whether that be you or a client you're working for) don't have the connection details of the db.
If you really can't get db connection details then yes, scraping the article and importing into the new db would be the best way forward. Screen scraper basic edition should suffice for this (it's free) - http://screen-scraper.com/download/basic_choose_platform.php

Tks for your reply...
If i don't have the credentials to access database, i can't have a look at it.
The only thing remains to scrap articles from the site and to import them into the new system, isn't ?

1/ Tks for the tool !
2/ What do you think about regarding software solution ?
3/ Ok for open site explorer. For listing all url indexed in google i can use the command site:www.domain.tld and see which one have good audience ?

If the site was built 7 years ago, and has had no work done on the programming side since, there is a good chance the database is not up to scratch and has lots of dirty data (not for sure, just a good chance).
There is also a good chance that it was created with a custom CMS rather than one of the more popular CMS's so bare that in mind when trying to work out which one was used.
If I was faced with this situation, and I knew little about the old system, I would do the following:
- Investigate the database structure/schema and what data is stored where
- Create a new database and application to support the new website
- Migrate old data across from the old database to the new database using SQL export and import scripts
Once you have the new site up an running (in a test environment) you can think about how are going to redirect pages by using tools like opensiteexplorer to examine the most linked to URLs and then use urlrewriting (rather than redirection) to do the mapping (i assume the new site will be on the same domain).

I agree with Baptiste's direction, was looking for a site like built with

1 - A tool that may give a hint : http://builtwith.com/
2 - Being a coder will help but it may take time to understand the old database. Software solution may exist but are probably not free.
3 - You can use opensiteexplorer's top pages, but if you have a developer to make the database migration, he will be able to create a redirect script to have ALL pages redirected to the new url

Is a new website the only way to get better rankings?
Our website is https://www.franklin-bell.com.au. For a while now we've been trying to get a few of our pages on there to get a better rank on google. A local SEO agency told us that some of our pages are not like "the modern standard" for web pages, but our page score for the keywords we want is 90% and higher. Do we really need to completely rebuild the website (it was built in 2014) in order to get better rankings? Or is it sufficient to have the 97% page score and then just get some back links and social media referrals etc. Thanks in advance.

Duplicate content across two websites
Hi. I'm looking at ways to compare duplicate content across two different websites instead of one, as with the Moz crawler. Instead it will flag up up duplicates present on both site A and B.

Web Site Migration Testing and SEO-QA Automation?
Hey Mozzers, Are there any good Migration-SEO-QA Tools out there? Given a prioritized list of URLs and prioritized list of Keywords, is there a tool that can compare basic SEO factors, old URL vs. new URL, and identify all the specific gaps that need to be fixed? Here is a basic SEO-QA acceptance checklist, for porting any website. . . . Until the porting work is completed we cannot accept the new website. Givens: 1. A list of the Top 100 URLs from the old site, prioritized by conversion rates, landing page traffic, and inbound links. 2. A list of the planned 404 - mapped URLs, old to new site, from the porting team. 3. A list of the current Top 200 Keywords, prioritized. 4. A good amount of SEO work has already been done, by several professionals, for the current (old) site. **How to evaluate if the new site will be acceptable to Google? Check ON-PAGE SEO Factors... ** **. . . that is, the NEW site must be AS GOOD AS (or better than) the current (old) site,

in the eyes of Google, to preserve the On-Page SEO work already done. ** Criteria: URLs ok? :: Is the URL mapping ok, old to new, best web page? LINKS ok :: Are all internal LINKS and keyword Anchor Text ported? TEXT ok :: On-page content, TEXT and keywords ok? TITLE ok :: HTML Title and title keywords ok? DESCRIPTION ok :: HTML Meta Description ok? H1, H2 ok :: HTML H1, H2 and keywords ok? IMG kwds :: HTML IMG and ALT keywords ok? URL kwds :: URL - keywords in new URLs ok? Potential porting defects: Keywords in URL missing: Keywords in HTML Title missing: Keywords in Meta Description missing: Any internal LINKS or Link anchor text missing: Keywords in Page TEXT missing: H1, H2 missing keywords: HTML IMG alt-text, IMG file URLs, any missing keywords: Notes: Until the porting work is completed we cannot accept the new site, or set a target date for potential cutover. There are eight (8) data items per URL, and about one hundred (100) URLs to be considered for SEO-QA before going live. We were expecting to cutover before the end of February, at the latest. There is no point in doing full QA acceptance-tests until the porting work is completed. QA spot-checks have found far too many defects. About 60% of the landing-page traffic comes via the top 40 URLs. With over 100 URLs to look at, it can take more than a week or two just to do SEO-QA in detail, manually, item-by-item, page-by-page, side-by-side, old vs. new. Spot-checks indicate a business disaster would occur unless the porting defects are fixed before going live. _Any Migration-QA Tools?_Given a prioritized list of URLs and prioritized list of Keywords, is there a tool that can compare basic On-Page SEO factors, old URL vs. new URL, and identify most of the specific gaps that need to be fixed before going live with the new site? _ *** Edit: Any comments on the SEO criteria, tools, or methods will be appreciated!_0 -
Two PR 5 websites, but little to no link data in OSE. How??
As the title states - We've recently developed two sites for clients - within the last 4 months or so. With the Google PR update, both sites are sitting as PR 5 sites. I've tried to have a look in the OSE for the backlink profile of both websites, but I see nothing. Even Majestic SEO's fresh index doesn't provide much info. The DA of each site is 11-16. I would really love to see what's generating the link juice to these sites. Any ideas? The two sites are: https://bfore.co.za

How can I recognize spammy links that harm my website
Hello, Can someone tell me how I can recognize links that can harm my website? I have OpenSiteExplorer and CognitiveSEO as tools to create nice backlinking reports for me. But my problem is, how do I know if a link shown on these reports can harm my website so I can remove them? Is it linktypes, low auth. links etc? Thank you for your answers in advance! Regards, Thomas

Several DA 70+ websites linked to me, not showing in OSE
Like the title says, about 3 weeks ago several websites linked to me. Those websites have very high and probably 100% of this board has heard of them. I'm wondering how long it takes for OSE to recognize these links, and if my website's DA and mozTrust will increase as a result?

How to download an entire Website (HTML only), ready to rehost
Hi all, I work for a large retail brand and we have lots of counterfeit sites ranking for our products. Our legal team seizes the websites from the owners who then setup more counterfeit sites and so forth. As soon as we seize control of a website, the site content is deleted and subsequently it falls out of the SERPs to be immediately replaced by the next lot of counterfeit sites. I need to be able to download a copy of the site before it is seized, so that once I have control of it I can put the content back and hopefully quickly regain the SERPs (with an additional 'counterfeit site' notice superimposed on that page in JS). Does anyone know or can recommend good software to be able to download an entire website, so that it can be easily rehosted? Thanks FashionLux (Edited title to reflect only wanting to download html, CSS and images of site. I don't want the sites to actually be functional - only appear the same to Google)
