Hiding Links Under A Tab As Good As Anything Else And More Attractive?
-
I'm working with a site that finds standard linking to spread authority to interior pages ugly. Here's what they don't like:
-
footers
-
tag clouds
-
sidebar lists of links
-
text heavy paragraphs with links
-
a gallery of images with alt text/links
So, I'm looking for other ways to link from their homepage to these less prominent pages inside the site. Here are my two questions:
1. Would something like this work, with the links under the "Specs" tab (p.s., this is just a random example and not my client):
http://www.goincase.com/products/detail/CL57925/
2. Any other ideas for spreading the authority via links from their homepage and other pages on the site to less powerful pages?
Thanks! Best...Mike

Hey, thanks Sheldon!

In my opinion, there's nothing greyhat about those tabs, Mike. The mouseover makes it quite obvious that it's a navigation link, and in reality, you're not even taking the user to another page. I wouldn't hesitate to use it myself.

Thanks Ryan!
I think it's a technique that could lend itself to borderline grey hatness, just because it doesn't really seem geared to the user and you could really bury a ton of links. In this particular example, the links don't appear as links until you roll over them. Maybe just a design goof. Thanks!

The links are clearly visible in HTML so Google will pick up on them. The links are accessible to visitors. It is basically a different form of a drop down menu. You click the menu button, then the page changes not terribly unlike a frame.
My gut feeling is this is grey hat SEO, but I can't place my finger on where it crosses the line. A webmaster can say "hey, the links are clear and available to anyone who wants to see or use them." and they would be right.
What makes it grey to me is clearly most visitors would never see those links.
Overall, I would be ok with using that technique, but I would give preference to the image idea I shared if that was a reasonable option.
I would be interested to hear feedback from others on the topic.

I'm probably not explaining it very well. Sorry.
You go here: http://www.goincase.com/products/detail/CL57925/
You click on the "Specs" tab. You get a new tab which breaks down info by "Compatability, Color, Styles & Sku". Under "Styles" there's a line that reads:
"black, CMJ, convertible, ipad, iPad2, iPad 2, snap, snap case"
Those links.
-
I must be missing something. I do not see any line for Styles.
I did a CTRL+F for Specs and their is only one instance of Specs on the page. I did a search for "styles" and that term is not found on this page.
Here is a link to a screenshot of what I see: http://www.terapvp.com/data/external/specs.jpg

Hi Ryan,
Thanks for the message. I only say "hiding" in the sense of making text links less prominent design-wise. So, instead of having columns of text links, to do something more attractive, maybe with images or tabs or something.
On the example under the "Specs" tab, there's a line for "Styles." Those terms are links to other pages.
Do you think those links under "Styles" get picked up by a Google bot and valued as well as any other kind of link?
Thanks! Best...Mike

Hi Mike.
Would something like this work, with the links under the "Specs" tab?
I am not clear on what you mean when you refer to links under the Specs tab. I do see the Specs tab on the site you mentioned. I see it in a navigation bar: About, Features, Specs, Reviews. That is a perfectly acceptable way to offer a link. There is nothing hidden about it. Am I missing something?
Any other ideas for spreading the authority via links from their homepage?
The only idea that comes to mind to "hide" links is you can link images to the links. If you have a site similar to the one you mentioned, you can have a line of thumbnail images of various products with each image being a link to a different page within your site.
The moment you say "hiding" alarms go off in my head. As long as the link is clearly visible and usable to visitors, then there is no problem with it. You certainly do not have to call attention to the link, but if you actually hide it, you've crossed the black hat line.

Affects of a Home Link 301 Permanent Redirect in the Main Nav Bar
Hi I created a home page link in the main nav bar using functions.php request, and this leads to the home page, and it works fine. The logo on the site when clicked, resolves the home page domain.com which is fine. Is it ok to have a home page link in my main nav bar, as well as a clickable logo which on-click returns the web user to the home page also? (any seo implications with the permanent 301 redirects?) I like to give web users the choice especially as not all users are aware that they can click back to the home page by clicking on the logo. I considered breadcrumbs already. Thanks.

Website spread over two domains - The Good,The Bad and the Ugly ?
Hi, I am wondering if the way I have set up our website site is creating more harm than good ? All our SEO efforts and content is located @ www.sparrowmakeup.com.au however our portfolio is located at www.make-up-artists.com.au. Questions ? Will Analytic bounce rates effect my SERP, as most people click on the portfolio link in the first 5-15 sec of landing on our page ?? Is there a better way of setting it up ? the reason I set it up like this in the first place was because we wanted a different look/theme for the portfolio. (using WP) Is there any other issues that this setup might have in the SEO / SERP department ?? Is there any benefits and how can I maximize on them (silver lining) Your help and experience is greatly appreciated. Regards Ed

Changing Links that Show Up when I Google Brand (Site) Name
Hi SEOmoz Community, A quick question for you all. I've added an attachment for reference. When I google my brand name, say for example, Applied StemCell, I see six links as well below the description. Oddly though, these links seem to be chosen at random, or at least I'm not sure how Google decides on them. When I click on one of the links that is the company's name, Applied StemCell it brings me to a PDF document! Is there any way I can choose which ones to display there? Thanks! OF2oVVN.png

Does Google follow links inside a <noscript>tag?</noscript>
I'm looking at making an embedable calculator and asking users to embed it to their website. I had the idea of using javascript to include the calculator which would also conatain a text link back to my site in order to gain some back links. If it's possible Google won't see the link (as they may not execute the javascript), is it safe to place the link in the <noscript>tag? If so, Will it be indexed and will Page Rank be passed?</span></p> <p>Thanks in advance for your answers. </p> <p>Anthony</p> <p><span style="color: #5e5e5e;"><br /></span></p></noscript>

How can I reduce my warnings for excesive links on our site?
Our campaign overview shows well over 100 warnings that could be hurting our google ranking based on excessive links on pages. Each page listed, however, is simply due to listing the brands we carry, and linking to the products. Is there a way to do this without hurting our ranking? A better way than linking, perhaps? Thanks in advance!

What is a really great bounce rate for a product or service site? What does Good look like?
I am really curious about a result I have never seen before. Our bounce rate went down a lot on a new site. So, what is good??? Recently, we took on a project with a company that offers a product they install for consumers and who had been in business for 15 plus years. The company is successful, has good customer base of those who have been made very happy, etc. It is not a repeat sale type of product, etc. One and done. Their site when we began talking was roughly a year old and was not well constructed but not terrible. Most of the issues were around I frames, use of older coding, poor SEO, etc. There was not really a way to "redesign" and we built a new site. This became a true collaboration in a B2B environment as the owner pushed us like crazy. Not the bad kind of push, the one that makes you say to your team, "Let's find a way!" The result, IMO, was a gorgeous site. But, as you know, those are a dime a dozen. But, to get to the point, when we took over the account they had a bounce rate of around 45%. I did not see this as either good or bad, but a fact and for this industry probably not bad at all. In all honesty, I was not looking at that as a first metric I wanted to move, but it was obviously at or near the top for all the reasons we know. So, this site is a local business, not an everyday product and gets about 2500 to 3000 uniques per month. If we compare to May of 2011/2012: 2011 2012 Total Visitors 1852 3,298 Uniques 1609 2,740 Pageviews 5,634 23,203 Pages/visit 3.04 7.04 Avg Duration 2.05 3.20 Yes, I am leaving off what we are getting, yes, I am leaving off the site. Please don't hate me. I am really wanting to see what others see with site changes and bounce rates first and will disclose. So, what's a great bounce rate? How do you know?
