I'm the Marketing Director at a car dealership that is trying to break into online shopping. We have had an internet sales team for about 4 years handling online leads. These leads were generated by forms present on our website. However, I'm trying to step up our production of leads online (we are currently at 1-2%).
Here's my problem:
The current method that car dealership website developers use, at least the 4 I've utilized, makes all the search pages have duplicate content, and many of the product/car pages have duplicate content (Title, etc.). Is there a way to stop all of these search pages from coming up as duplicate content?
My other question is:
Our inventory completely refreshes about every two months, what would be the best option for our product web pages?
Should I no-index them?
301 redirect to a similar vehicle?
Any better options?

Agree with EGOL on the complexity of this issue. Seeping decisions on this can be dangerous. One point I will speak to is the duplicate content on the search results issue. I assume you are running into this problem because your search results pages are being indexed by google, and many of them show similar content. There is no consensus on this issue right now, even from Google. They will not penalize, however, because of duplicated content found in search results. So i wouldnt worry about that problem right now.
As for the expired/sold inventory pages, i would say to either redirect to a more permanent page (like a ford explorer sub category page for all explorers) or you just delete those pages, making sure that you manage your sitemaps and urls on a regular basis. But that usually takes too much time.

I am not sure what platform you are using to maintain your inventory list online. So I am unable to give you a direct answer.
Making assumptions however I would suggest to start using the canonical tag to direct all of your similar listings to the cars you think are the best quality to list.
When you delete a listing it would also be helpful to make sure you also have the ability to specify where to 301 Redirect them to. You should also try to stay on top of of where these redirects point to. If you have one car they all point to and now that car is no longer active and it redirects some other car, it would begin making the other redirects less effective. All of this would be best handled through custom programming so it would maintain the redirects automatically.
If you were to try to no-index them you could potentially be losing out on the incoming link value to a specific car should people link to it.

I believe that there are many ways to approach this. However, the methods that will have the best results depends upon the amount of skill, time and expertise your business can put into content, into running the site and into promoting it. Add onto that the way that you hope that the site will work to acquire and deliver the leads.
I believe that quickly considered answers tossed out in a Q&A have a greater chance of missing the mark than hitting it.
My advice would be to hire a person to understand your business model, learn about the resources that you can put into the site and then come up with a plan that will deliver the best results.
Ten minute answers are wildly thrown darts.

Duplicate content? - Ecommerce reviews loading the same products on every page
Hello there! I use a plugin on my ecom site that shows customer reviews - not product reviews but general shopping experience reviews. The plugin also loads links and short descriptions of products those customers bought. Having installed it site-wide, on every page there are short descriptions of the same products. Of course, as people leave new reviews the content changes (but it doesn't happen very often). So the question is: Is having links and short descriptions of the same products on every page harmful for SEO in this case? I'd be grateful for any insight into this matter.

Ecommerce site Header tag compulsory to follow till h6?
Hello Experts? Header tags for homepage, category, product pages is it required to be have from h1 till h6? If No...then w3c validator will give me Warning and it will never Pass my site so? Do google say h1, h2, h3..etc should be in sequence only? As per my site design I cannot define h1 always on top it can be after h2 or h3 so? h1 can be only 1 for per page but it is fine h2, h3 etc multiple for same page? At listing page to give all 30 products names as h3 is fine or it is not correct way? For ecommerce site what is the best header tags you suggest? I mean till h3 is fine or h1 also fine? Do header tags helps google in crawling ? or for ranking purpose? or header tags should be best for blog not for ecommerce site? Thanks!

Ecommerce Canonical Question
Hi all, first question (eek) Could I pick the brains of fellow users around an issue we are having with canonical urls on a magento website. At the moment we do not have these enabled as it seems to break our indexing. Cut a long story short, we have thousands of products but haven't rewritten many of the descriptions from the manufacturers yet and so have noindexed all the product pages (freeing them as we go). The goal, for now, is to pull in traffic via the filtering options we have on the site The goal, for now, is to pull in traffic via the filtering options we have on the site. For example, if you go to Dresses, there then are several filtering options which would allow you to choose a colour, shape and material - if you wished to filter that precisely. These filtering options are all crawlable and so we would then have a page that google could index for, for example, Green Lace Maxi Dress. All good there, few people search for specific products and a lot search for types of products so we are covered. To get back to the issue at hand. If we enable the canonical option on our magento plugin it will stop us from being able to target these terms. Whereas the filtering option would create domain.com/dress/green/maxi/lace with the page title of Green Lace Maxi Dress, if we enable the canonical part of the seo plugin the canonical link which would be added to the page would be - instantly removing our ability to rank for longer tail dress related searches (we are not going to compete with the big players on the premium terms, yet!). There are alternative plugins we can buy for magento to add the correct tag, however, if every page's canonical just points back it itself like this, is there really much point spending nearly $1000 on the 4 licences we would need to cover our range of sites. Is it really necessary, in this case, that we have a canonical for the product filtering? Sorry for the long post, hope it made sense. Thanks for any assistance.

Duplicate ecommerce domains and canonical
Hi everybody! I'd like to discuss the SEO strategy I've thought regarding a client of mine and ask for help because it's a serious case of duplicate content. There is a main website (the business model one) where he compares the cost of medicines in several pharmacies, to show the cheapest shopping cart to the customer. But the shopping has to been made in another domain, within the selected pharmacie, because my country's law in Europe says that is compulsory to sell the medicines only on the pharmacy website. So my client has started to create domains, one for each pharmacy, where the differences between them are only some products, the business information of the pharmacy and the template's colour. But all of them shares the same product data base. My aim is to rank the comparing website (it contains all the products), not each pharmacy, so I've started to create different content for this one. Should I place rel=canonical in the pharmacies domains t the original one? For instance: www.pharmacie1.com >> www.originaltorank.com www.pharmacie2.com >> www.originaltorank.com www.pharmacie1.com/product-10 >> www.originaltorank.com/product-10 I've already discuss the possibilities to focus all the content in only one website, but it's compulsory to have different domains in order to sell medicines By the way, I can't redirect 301 because I need these websites exist for the same reason (the law) He is creating 1-3 new domains every week so obviously he has had a drop in his SEO traffic that I have to solve this fast. Do you think the canonical will be the best solution? I dont want to noindex these domains beacuse we're creating Google Local pages for each one in order to be found in their villages. Content on ecommerce categories - good or bad?
We have a case with a client where they previously had content on top of their most important ecommerce categories. The content was well integrated and should in my opinion enhance the category experience, but after doing some A/B testing they proved to only decrease the conversion rates when sending traffic directly to those categories. Around that topic I have two questions: Is it a bad thing to put the content BELOW the categories? I need examples of categories where content and products are very well integrated and enhances the category experience - any tips?

I'm looking to put a quite length FAQs tab on product pages on an ecommerce site. Am I likely to have duplicate content issues?
On an ecommerce site we have unique content on the product pages (i.e. descriptions), as well as the usual delivery and returns tabs for customer convenience. From this we haven't had any duplicate content issues or warnings, which seems to be the case industry-wide. However, we're looking to add a more lengthy FAQs tab which is still highly relevant to the customer but contains a lot more text than the other tabs. The product descriptions are also relatively small. Do you think this will cause potential duplicate content issues or should it be treated the same as a delivery tab, for instance?

Duplicate content on ecommerce
We have a website that we created a little over a year ago and have included our core products we have always focused on such as mobility scooters and power wheelchairs. We have been going through and updating product descriptions, adding product reviews that our customers have provided etc in order to improve on our SEO rankings and not be penalized by the Panda update. We were approached by a manufacturer last year about their products and they had close to 10k products that we were able to upload easily into our system. Obviously these all have standard manufacturers descriptions many sites are also using. It will take us forever to go through and change all of these and many products are similar to each other anyway they just vary in size, color etc. Will it help our rankings for our core products to simply go through and delete all of these additional products and categories and just add them one by one with unique descriptions and more detailed information when we have time? We aren't really selling many of them anyway so it won't hurt our sales. I'm clearly new to SEO and any help at all would be greatly appreciated.
