Removing Duplicate Page Content
-
Since joining SEOMOZ four weeks ago I've been busy tweaking our site, a magento eCommerce store, and have successfully removed a significant portion of the errors.
Now I need to remove/hide duplicate pages from the search engines and I'm wondering what is the best way to attack this?
Can I solve this in one central location, or do I need to do something in the Google & Bing webmaster tools?
Here is a list of duplicate content

Thank you Cyrus I will certainly read the blog post and consider the noindex, nofollow on content with a canonical tag that differs from the current served page' uri.
I am still at little confused as to why the SEOMOZ crawl is highlighting duplicate pages when the canonical tag is present and pointing to the primary content.
Take the following example page for example:-
http://www.planksclothing.com/planks-classic-t-shirt-black-multi.html
Firstly the page has a canonical tag. There is no search on the site and product is viewed a root level without directory structure, which in a Magento instance is the common problem with duplicate content...
Currently at the time of writing SEOMOZ is updating my duplicate repor, so I can't find out what is the duplicate content. Maybe it is updating to say it is not
Thanks
Amendment: After reading the supplied blog post (http://www.seomoz.org/blog/duplicate-content-in-a-post-panda-world) I have learn't that the above page is just not different and probably is in the area of "Thin Content".

There are many, many different types of duplicate content, and how you handle it depends on the specific type of duplicate content and your needs.
If you haven't already, I highly suggest you read Dr. Pete's excellent post on dupe content here: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/duplicate-content-in-a-post-panda-world
In your specific case it looks like you have multiple parameters serving the same basic content as your homepage. Is this correct?
In this case, you should set a canonical on every page pointing to the homepage. This also has the benefit of solving the errors in the SEOmoz PRO app.
It also sounds like you've addressed the issue in Google's Webmaster Tools. Unfortunately, Google doesn't let SEOmoz sync with Webmaster Tools, so anything you set there won't show up in the Web App.
Finally, don't forget about Bing Webmaster. They have similar parameter settings you can submit.
By the way, some SEOs would suggest putting meta robots "NOINDEX, FOLLOW" tags on those duplicate pages. While this may potentially send conflicting signals when coupled with the canonical tag, it is a potentially valid approach.
Hope this helps! Best of luck with your SEO.

This is exactly my current situation...
As a result of the SEOMOZ Duplicate content report I set about resolving these issues...
In the first instance I configured URL parameters via Google Webmaster Tools. It instantly occurred to me that whilst this fixes these potential duplicate content in Google this configuration does not affect other search engines and the work is unlikely to be reflected in future SEOMOZ crawls of the site.
I'm interested in creating a over arching method of removing the potential duplication caused via URL parameters required to paginate, sort and filter content. The majority of these URL parameters are standardized across web applications. But is it actually required?
In my case each Magento store uses the canonical tag correctly and has an updated robots.txt to restrict the crawling of areas of the site that should be excluded... In a sense this is the over arching method of removing potential duplicate content. So why is SEOMOZ reporting duplicate content?
I suppose the big question is... Is SEOMOZ crawling the site correctly, do these results reflect robots.txt and canonical tags?

Thank you for your thoughts.
As mentioned in my above response, canonical tags have already been configured for the site, it's just this home page that remains the issue.
-
Thanks for your response.
I looked in URL Parameters and see dir & mode are already defined.
Then I searched the http://www.unitedbmwonline.com page source for canonical links and none are defined, though I do have canonical tags setup for the rest of the site
Any other thoughts of how to remove these duplicates?

You can also tell Google to ignore certain query string variables through Webmaster Tools.
For instance, indicate that "dir" and "mode" have no impact on content.
Other SE's have simular controls.

This is why the canonical tag was invented, to solve duplicate content issues when URL parameters are involved. Set a canonical tag on all these pages to point towards the version of the page you want to appear in search results. As long as the pages are identical, or close to it, the search engines (most likely) will respect the canonical tag, and pass along the duplicate versions link juice to the page you're pointing to.
Here's some info: http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2009/02/specify-your-canonical.html. If you Google "canonical tag", you'll find lots more!

Penalties for duplicate content
Hello! We have a website with various city tours and activities listed on a single page (http://vaiduokliai.lt/). The list changes accordingly depending on filtering (birthday in Vilnius, bachelor party in Kaunas, etc.). The URL doesn't change. Content changes dynamically. We need to make URL visible for each category, then optimize it for different keywords (for example city tours in Vilnius for a list of tours and activities in Vilnius with appropriate URL /tours-in-Vilnius).The problem is that activities overlap very often in different categories, so there will be a lot of duplicate content on different pages. In such case, how severe penalty could be for duplicate content?

Should I remove pages to concentrate link juice?
So our site is database powered and used to have up to 50K pages in google index 3 years ago. After re-design that number was brought down to about 12K currently. Legacy URLs that are now generating 404 have mostly been redirected to appropriate pages (some 13K 301 redirects currently). Trafficked content accounts for about 2K URLs in the end so my question is should I in context of concentrating link juice to most valuable pages: remove non-important / least trafficked pages from site and just have them show 404 no-index non-important / least trafficked pages from site but still have them visible 1 or 2 above plus remove from index via Webmaster Tools none of the above but rather something else? Thanks for any insights/advice!

Product Syndication and duplicate content
Hi, It's a duplicate content question. We sell products (vacation rental homes) on a number of websites as well as our own. Generally, these affiliate sites have a higher domain authority and much more traffic than our site. The product content (text, images, and often availability and rates) is pulled by our affiliates into their websites daily and is exactly the same as the content on our site, not including their page structure. We receive enquiries by email and any links from their domains to ours are nofollow. For example, all of the listing text on mysite.com/listing_id is identical to my-first-affiliate-site.com/listing_id and my-second-affiliate-site.com/listing_id. Does this count as duplicate content and, if so, can anyone suggest a strategy to make the best of the situation? Thanks

Does Google see this as duplicate content?
I'm working on a site that has too many pages in Google's index as shown in a simple count via a site search (example): site:http://www.mozquestionexample.com I ended up getting a full list of these pages and it shows pages that have been supposedly excluded from the index via GWT url parameters and/or canonicalization For instance, the list of indexed pages shows: 1. http://www.mozquestionexample.com/cool-stuff 2. http://www.mozquestionexample.com/cool-stuff?page=2 3. http://www.mozquestionexample.com?page=3 4. http://www.mozquestionexample.com?mq_source=q-and-a 5. http://www.mozquestionexample.com?type=productss&sort=1date Example #1 above is the one true page for search and the one that all the canonicals reference. Examples #2 and #3 shouldn't be in the index because the canonical points to url #1. Example #4 shouldn't be in the index, because it's just a source code that, again doesn't change the page and the canonical points to #1. Example #5 shouldn't be in the index because it's excluded in parameters as not affecting page content and the canonical is in place. Should I worry about these multiple urls for the same page and if so, what should I do about it? Thanks... Darcy

URLs: Removing duplicate pages using anchor?
I've been working on removing duplicate content on our website. There are tons of pages created based on size but the content is the same. The solution was to create a page with 90% static content and 10% dynamic, that changed depending on the "size" Users can select the size from a dropdown box. So instead of 10 URLs, I now have one URL. Users can access a specific size by adding an anchor to the end of the URL (?f=suze1, ?f=size2) For e.g: Old URLs. www.example.com/product-alpha-size1 www.example.com/product-alpha-size2 www.example.com/product-alpha-size3 www.example.com/product-alpha-size4 www.example.com/product-alpha-size5 New URLs www.example.com/product-alpha-size1 www.example.com/product-alpha-size1?f=size2 www.example.com/product-alpha-size1?f=size3 www.example.com/product-alpha-size1?f=size4 www.example.com/product-alpha-size1?f=size5 Do search engines read the anchor or drop them? Will the rank juice be transfered to just www.example.com/product-alpha-size1?

No-index pages with duplicate content?
Hello, I have an e-commerce website selling about 20 000 different products. For the most used of those products, I created unique high quality content. The content has been written by a professional player that describes how and why those are useful which is of huge interest to buyers. It would cost too much to write that high quality content for 20 000 different products, but we still have to sell them. Therefore, our idea was to no-index the products that only have the same copy-paste descriptions all other websites have. Do you think it's better to do that or to just let everything indexed normally since we might get search traffic from those pages? Thanks a lot for your help!

Robots.txt & Duplicate Content
In reviewing my crawl results I have 5666 pages of duplicate content. I believe this is because many of the indexed pages are just different ways to get to the same content. There is one primary culprit. It's a series of URL's related to CatalogSearch - for example; http://www.careerbags.com/catalogsearch/result/index/?q=Mobile I have 10074 of those links indexed according to my MOZ crawl. Of those 5349 are tagged as duplicate content. Another 4725 are not. Here are some additional sample links: http://www.careerbags.com/catalogsearch/result/index/?dir=desc&order=relevance&p=2&q=Amy

http://www.careerbags.com/catalogsearch/result/index/?cat=9&color=241&dir=asc&order=relevance&q=baggallini All of these links are just different ways of searching through our product catalog. My question is should we disallow - catalogsearch via the robots file? Are these links doing more harm than good?0 -
Same content pages in different versions of Google - is it duplicate>
Here's my issue I have the same page twice for content but on different url for the country, for example: www.example.com/gb/page/ and www.example.com/us/page So one for USA and one for Great Britain. Or it could be a subdomain gb. or us. etc. Now is it duplicate content is US version indexes the page and UK indexes other page (same content different url), the UK search engine will only see the UK page and the US the us page, different urls but same content. Is this bad for the panda update? or does this get away with it? People suggest it is ok and good for localised search for an international website - im not so sure. Really appreciate advice.
