Can Other Websites You Own Affect Your Rankings?
-
Let's say you own three websites. One is low quality and Google frowns upon it, another is moderate and a third has stellar unique content.
Would Google penalize the third website because you own the first website?
On a related note - If you were banned from Google AdWords, would registering a site in your name potentially harm your rankings?
-
If I were you I'd start with a new google account just to be sure that nothing negative is carried across... but that may just be my sceptical view.
Being very pre-cautious if I wanted to make sure that nothing negative affected the quality site, I would also probably put the lesser quality sites into a different analytics account. But like Barry says, if they're hosted on the same server dedicated server or in the same IP range than google can make an educated guess that they're linked.
In the longer term, why don't you begin bring the other sites up to the same standard of quality as the best one, then you've got nothing to fear.
-
Hmm - Good to know. What do you think about having the same Google Analytics account?
-
It could; but unless you've been very bad, I wouldn't imagine that you would be penalized .
Google is a registrar, so has access to the whois details on all your domains, but if it's used I doubt it's for any sort of automatic penalty.
If you host your sites on the same server, again, Google can see that, but is unlikely to effect each other unless there's some cross linking - http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/myth-busting-virtual-hosts-vs-dedicated-ip-addresses/ - (I presume that link is still mostly true).
If you don't link the Google account to the new sites then there shouldn't be any automatic penalty applied either, just make sure and follow the rules regarding not opening a new adwords account.
Always exceptions, but you're probably okay.
-
I would also advise you not to link from the high quality site into the low quality site. Outbound links to spammy sites may cause guilt by association. Also, do not overlink from the low quality to the quality site as Google may flag that as well. Do not be concerned about the AdWords penalty. I know sites that got bounced from AdWords and nothing ever happened to their rankings.

Hey Bryce,
Thanks man. I'm actually just getting into SEO after several years in paid traffic. I intend on using pretty much just whitehat tactics, a lot of which I learned from SEOmoz.
I don't think I necessarily have the best reputation with Google, so I was just seeing if that might come back around to haunt me.
-
I don't think that google would penalize one site because it shares a common owner with another site of poor value. However, it's likely that the common owner utilized the same tactics across all sites and something THEY have done could have caused the penalty.
As far as the ban on AdWords, again, I don't think it would negatively affect a site right out of the gate.
If you've been banned from AdWords and you have multiple sites suffering a penalty, It sounds like there's an issue with the overall approach to SEO.

Instructional Videos on Separate Websites
Am I doing this correctly? We have 3 websites and shoot a lot of instructional videos on how to use our products. I build a webpage for the video and put it on all three websites, using rel="canonical" on 2 of the videos pages, pointing to the single most important page, is this the right method? TY

Can someone help with Canonical?
I have a wordpress site that On-Page Grader is saying I don't have Canonical done correctly. Here is the comment. Appropriate Use of Rel Canonical If the canonical tag is pointing to a different URL, engines will not count this page as the reference resource and thus, it won't have an opportunity to rank. Make sure you're targeting the right page (if this isn't it, you can reset the target above) and then change the canonical tag to reference that URL. Recommendation: We check to make sure that IF you use canonical URL tags, it points to the right page. If the canonical tag points to a different URL, engines will not count this page as the reference resource and thus, it won't have an opportunity to rank. If you've not made this page the rel=canonical target, change the reference to this URL. NOTE: For pages not employing canonical URL tags, this factor does not apply. I have quite a few sites and have never had an issue with this. Can anyone help? I tried installing a plugin but that seems to have made it worse. This is the front page of the site btw.

Table text : Does that influences the website's ranking ?
We are currently working on a new page for one of our clients and there is A LOT of writing, so A LOT of differents pages. If I decide to put the texts on table text instead of creating a link for another page, will that influence the ranking in any way ? I've been a web writer for only a year now and still try to figure out how to optimize the written part. Thank you for your answers.

Can't rank for a target key word "penalized?"
I've been trying to rank for the key word "kayak fishing" for my site www.yakangler.com. Last year when I started working on the SEO for my site I was on page 30 for Google search results so like the 300th result. After tweaking things on my site I managed to get to the second page but have since fallen all the way back to page 25-26 in the search results. I'm wondering if I'm penalized for this key word. I can't figure out why my site is ranking soooo badly for "kayak fishing" Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Sudden Site Rankings Drop
Good day guys, We have been following strict SEO strategies for the past 6 months, all sites have been improving incredibly well, all except one. The site in question is http://bit.ly/IH4pkM . The site is regarding automotive spray booth equipment. We were ranking on the first page for the keyword "spray booth" (which is the most important one), at place #4 for weeks on end. However since half-way last week, the site has been dropped to half-way the second page (#17). There are barely any crawler errors listed for our campaign on SEOMoz. There were several pages of which the meta description was missing, but that has been fixed earlier this week. When it comes to link building, I looked at what the top competitors were doing, and was looking for unique link building opportunities myself. We have received 0 webmaster tools warnings as well. I do not believe we are penalized due to the "penguin" update. After all, if you search for for the company's name in Google, it is still listed on there (# 2). Nor have we been part of dodgy link networks at all. So my question is, what do you guys believe made us drop the rankings? Is there some on-page issues I am overlooking? Any recommendations to restore out previous rankings? Kind Regards, Roderic
