Does Anyone Have Evidence of the Effectiveness of Guest Posts?
-
I think the tactic of guest posts is a good way to earn links to a site. But I have a few concerns:
-Links are usually at the very end of the page.
-Guest posts are on blog posts which usually have much less link juice than top level pages.
-A lot of sites abuse guest posting for spammy anchor text, e.g. "cheap auto loans"
-Some SEOs have said that Google will devalue guest post links in the future (due to abuse)Does anyone have examples, tests, or case studies of guest posting helping a site improve their rankings? (or an opinion on the value of guest posting)

Thanks for the response Alan. We haven't explored this route yet, but I am becoming more thoroughly convinced and am practicing some tips offered by another SEOmozzer. I agree that it seems to be all in the blog selection.

My personal experience is that done right, it brings a lot of diverse value. Keys to follow:
- Find highly relevant, topically related blogs to get the posts on
- Write an article that's truly valuable to that blogs readers
- Include a link in the article (2nd or 3rd paragraph) to the site you're targeting
- Be sure the content is truly relevant to the link you're embedding, and that the link is truly realistic in its use
- be very attentive to comments - respond with respect, appreciation and value
- Include links to other sites and blog articles when appropriate for even more trust, and occasionally even more interaction from the owners/bloggers of THOSE sites
When I followed that path, my own blog and site grew in visits and inbound links of varying quality and weight (which is natural, as it should be, as far as a healthy inbound link profile goes), and established trust and authority signals critical to my goals.
So I always recommend this path to clients and those that follow through find the same value return.

Google Authorship and Guest Posts
I'm including my google author details at the bottom of guest posts with a link to my site. Is this not giving google a clear signal the that it is a guest post by me and although the site owner has found it worthy enough to include the post on their site it's not really an 'editorially given link' in the true sense of the term?

Backlinking post penguin
Does anyone have any effective strategies about how to backlink for a new website. I'm just really cautious of this new penguin update and don't want to submit to too many directories or do anything that will get penalised, seen as the website is new.

When editing your dofollow signature in forums, what happens with old posts?
Well hi there...!!? Now, here's a scenario: I've been anchortext linkbuilding (with success, wuhuuu!!) for a client through a couple of months and I've aggregated quite a few links from a series of 'solid' forums. The majority (we are 99!) of links are build using the signature in my posts and comments. Now my client has shifted focus from this specific linkbuilding task and I have another client awaiting to "take the place in my signature". How do I ensure that historical posts from client #1 stays unaltered, while new comments have client #2 in my signature? A few after thoughts: Are there any automated ways to monitor the above mentioned scenario? What are the chances of getting penalized from the forum, loosing historical comments (links) Tally ho! ;o)

How effective is leaving comment links?
Has anyone seen evidence of rankings improvement from leaving do-follow comment links or is it a waste of time?

What article directories (if any) are still worthing posting to?
While article marketing my not be at the top of the SEO strategy heap, it has, thus far, had a place small place at the table. In light of the Panda-Farmer-Anti-Demand-Media-Content update, I'm re-thinking article marketing altogether. Which, if any, general article directories are still worth adding content to in terms of links and eyeballs? Should these general article directories be avoided altogether?
